To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNESTO Rrooroya subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York, in the county ofNew York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Retainers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hat retainer.

The primary object of the present invention is the provision of aretaining means -positioned within a hat and adapted for ready manipulation exteriorly thereof for engaging the hair of the wearer for retaining the hat in position, while the device may be worn as a hair ornament or barrette when detached from the hat.

A. further object of the device is the provision of an arrangement positioned within a hat provided with resiliently operating closing jaws retractable from a point outside of the hat by means presenting the appearance of ordinary hat pins having fanciful heads imparting esthetic beauty to the device when operatively assembled.

With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and then claimed.

In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a central radial sectional view through a hat provided with the present device, the latter arranged in its normal retaining position. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the device detached, parts being broken away, the elements being illustrated by dotted lines in their open position. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device. Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view thereof taken upon line IV-IV of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an end portion of one of the operating rods with one of the anchors for the spring member of the device mounted thereon.

It will be understood that the present in vention may be employed with hats of different construction, the same being herein illustrated as carried by a straw hat 10 having a crown 11 provided with a flat top 12,

the said hat having the usual outwardly projecting brim 13. 5 The device for retaining the hat in position upon the head of the wearer consists of an elongated base plate 1 1 having depending end fianges 15 and intermediately arranged spacedbearing brackets 16. The plate 1 1 is provided with an ovular central opening 17 and with a plurality of perforations 18 between the said brackets 16, adapteolfor receiving thread or other hold-fast devices (not shown) for securing the plate 14 to the inner side of the hat crown 12 in the positioniillustrated in F ig.. 1 .of the drawing. Shifting blocks 19' of substantially the same size and-shape as the brackets 16 are arranged outwardly thereof provided with operating rods 20 centrally secured to the blocks 19 by the threaded inner ends 21 of the said rods, the latter being journaled through central perforations 22 in the end flanges 15. The rods 20 are in substantial axial alinement with each other and project outwardly through the hat crown 11 being provided with heads 23 upon their outer ends conforming to any desired configuration of hat pin head thereby presenting a structure that is valuable for its esthetic beauty. The blocks 19 are provided with spaced guide pins 24 projecting inwardly through guide openings 25 in the brackets 16, the inner ends 26 of the said pins being sharpened for entering the hair of the wearer when the hat 10 is positioned upon the hat. Anchoring posts 27 are carried by the inner ends of the rods 20 for receiving thereover the opposite ends of a resilient member 28 such as an elastic band or tape, which resilient member freely passes through alining perforations 29 and 30 in the brackets 16 and block 19 respectively, thus connecting the two blocks 19 resiliently together. The perforations 22 and 25 are preferably provided with bushings 31.

From this detailed description of the device, the complete operation thereof will be apparent. With the device secured in the hat 10 as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the resilient member 28 normally holds the blocks 19 in fiat engagement with the brackets 16 and with the inner ends 26 of the pins 24: slightly spaced apart. Upon placing the hat 10 upon the head of the wearer, the heads 23 are grasped and the rods 20 as well as the blocks 19 pulled outwardly, thus separating the pin ends 26 and allowing some of the hair of the wearer to be positioned therebetween. Upon releasing the rod heads 23, the resilient member 28 draws the pins 2 f toward each other and engages some of the hair upon the pins 24, the ends 26 being forced through the hair. In this manner, the hat 10 is secured upon the head of the wearer and can only be removed by forcibly separating the pins 24 by pulling outwardly upon the rod heads 23. The exterior appearance of the hat 10 when provided with this device is enhanced in beauty While the device consumes very little space and in no manner interferes with the usual use of the hat.
