Description

w. MORRIS.
MORTAR HOE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB- II. 1916 1;197,580. Patented Sept. 5,1916.
STAKT.
WILLIAM MORRIS, OF JACKSON,,NEBRASKA.
MORTAR-HOE.
Application filed February 11, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Dakota, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mortar-Hoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hoes, and particularly to mortar hoes.
One object of the invention is to provide a mortar hoe by means of which mortar can be more thoroughly and intimately mixed than with the ordinary hoes'now used.
Another object is to provide a hoe of this description which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost, and which will be easy and effective in operation.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a hoe made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is a horizontal sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing 10 represents the blade or body of the hoe, which is formed from a single blank of suitable metal. Formed in the blade, and extending longitudinally thereof are three rows of openings 11, 12 and 13, the former of which are circular in outline. The row of openings 12 are formed by striking out a plurality of tongues or webs 12 on the forward face of the hoe blade which extend therefrom at an angle. The openings 13 are similarly formed but the tongues or webs 13 are also formed to extend at an angle to the front face of the blade and in opposite direction to the webs 12. All of these webs extend transversely across the openings, as clearly seen in the sectional views. The vertical sides of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1916. Serial No. 77,722.
blade are turned rearwardly as shown at 14 for the purpose of preventing mortar passing around the sides of the blade as the blade is drawn through the mortar and toward the operator. The blade is equipped with a suitable handle 15 by means of which the same is manipulated through the mortar. It will thus be seen that as the blade is drawn toward the operator, and through the mortar, some of the mortar will pass through the openings 13, and engaging against the webs 13 will be deflected toward the right, and some will pass through the openings 12, and engaging the webs 12 will be deflected toward the left in overlapping relation to that deflected by the webs 13. Thus the mortar will be defiected first in one direction, and then in the other, so that it will be more intimately mixed, and more finely divided, than with hoes of ordinary construction. It will of course be understood that mortar will also pass through the openings 11 in both directions of movement of the blade, so that the portion of mortar above the upper line of openings 12 will fall onto the mass which is passed through the openings 12 and 13 and also be deflected by the webs. Furthermore, this will give the same efiect as the lifting action given with the ordinary hoe when it is passed through the mortar.
What is claimed is:
1. A mortar hoe comprising a blade formed with a plurality of rows of openings and deflecting webs, one row of openings having forwardly extending and lat orally directed deflecting webs, another row of openings having forwardly extending and laterally directed webs extending in a direction opposite to those of the beforementioned row, and rearwardly directed guard flanges on the sides of the blade.
2. A mortar hoe comprising a blade formed with a plurality of horizontal rows of openings and deflecting webs, the upper row of openings being formed to extend through the hoe blade at right angles to the plane of its front face, the next lower row of openings having forwardly and laterally directed deflecting webs, while the next lower row of openings is provided With for- In testimony whereof, I aflix my sigma Wardly and laterally directed deflecting ture, in the presence of two Witnesses. Webs extending in opposite direction to WILLIAM MORRIS. those of the above row, and rearwardly Witnesses:
5 directed guard flanges on the sides of the J. W. COLLINS, blade. R. F. QUINN.
