Description

ALFRED HOLTER, 0F RJ'UKAN, NORWAY.
FASTENING-PLATE.
LI'EWESDI.
Application filed July 6, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALFRED HOLTER, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Rjukan, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening- Ilates', and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a: part of this specification.
My invention relates to means for fastening all sorts of plates, such as repairing plates, mounting plates, skeleton and the like plates on to woodwork, and more especially relates to the form of theteeth used in such plates for fastening them to the wood.
In the following the invention shall by way of example be. explained in connection with a repairing plate for burst staves.
It often happens that a stave in a barrel bursts owing to crossgrain or knags or knots in the wood, or owing to the iron hoops havingcut into the stave and split it up. Insuch cases it has usually been necessary to repair the barrel by replacing the burst stave by a fresh one. If such mishap befalls a filled barrel, this repair cannot be made without knocking in' the bottom of the barrel and emptying it. Such repairs are very expensive and also require trained men. If themishap occurs during the transport of the barrel, it is often of great importance to have a suitable remedy at hand.
I have found that in many casesa fully satisfactory repair may be brought about by aid of a connection plate, provided with teeth of the special form herein referred to. I therefore. have constructed a special connection plate for this purpose, having split teeth of such a form, that the split parts when they are driven into the Wood are only spread sufficiently to force the barbs into the wood, thereby insuring a reliable fastening. Y I
In the accompanying drawing is shown an executional form of the said repairing plate.

plate. Fig. 2 is an end view and Fig. 3 a top View of the same.
As will be seen from the drawings the plate 3 is along its edges provided with a number of substantially rigid split teeth 1, 1 and 2, 2 of such form that when driven into the wood the split parts are bent slightly outward from each other as indi cated by the arrows in Fig. 1, the bending taking place at the root of each tooth near the plate owing to their inner faces 4: having a curved form. This outward flaring of the said teeth combined with the notches 5 provided along their outeredges have the effect that it is extremely difficult to have the plate loosened after the teeth have been driven home. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the teeth 1 and 2 may-be arranged in different longitudinal planes in order to prevent cracking of the staves on driving home the teeth.
If the material to be transported in the barrel makes a greater tightness desirable,
the plate 3 may be provided with an underlying layer of paper or the like. It may also plate for repairing burst staves in barrels and the like, I wantit to be distinctly understood that I claim as my invention the use of teeth of the form described in connection with plates of any form and for any purpose, for fastening such plates to woodwork, such as corner mountings, skeleton plates and the like.
Claim.
A fastening device comprising a plate having substantially rigid teeth perpendicular thereto arranged in pairs in different longitudinal planes, said teeth having barbed outer edges and smooth curved inner opposing edges, for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
