TUBE-CLAMP.
Application led March 29, 1916.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES P. KUEHNER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Frovidence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tube clamps of the class more particularly adapted for squeezing and closing rubber tubing such as that used in so-called fountain syringes and the like and is an improvement on my copending patent application Serial Number 82,296.
The object of my present invention is to provide a-clamp of this character having two coperating jaws, one jaw formed of sheet metal and the opposite jaw formed of wire bent into the desired form, the two jaws being connected together and arranged to be closed by a cam pivotally mounted in the ears connected to the sheet metal jaw.
A further object of this invention is to provide oppositely disposed laterally extending loops formed in the wire member for frictionally engaging the rubber tubes to prevent the clamp from slipping thereon when the jaws are open.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1- is a side elevation of my improved tube clamp as applied to a tube and showing the jaws in open position. Fig. 2- shows my improved tube clamp applied to a tube with the jaws in closed position. Fig. 3- is a top view of my improved clamp applied to a tube and illustrating the wire arms as bent to form opposite laterally extending loops engaging the tube. Fig. Q is a view of the under side of the clamp showing the stock as being cut from the body portion and rolled over the wire arms to connect these two members together. Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the body portion of the clamp which is constructed of sheet metal and is provided with two spaced apart oppositely disposed side ear members 11, see Figs. 1 and 5, pierced at their upper ends at 12 for the purpose hereinafter described. This body portion is also provided with a forwardly extending lip 13 which serves as a lower jaw of the clamp. The upper jaw la of this clamp is formed of a single length of wire which is preferably i'irst bent at its middle portion to form an upper transversely disposed biting bar 16. The side wire members 15 are then bent inward slightly so as to extend rearwardly between these side ears. After extending rearwardly the desired distance both side wires are bent over and back substantially upon themselves and their ends 17 extend back into the body portion and are secured therein by cutting two strips of stock from the body portion at 18 and rolling each strip as at 19 in opposite directions, see Fig. 5, over their respective wires 15, thereby securely binding the wire jaw member to the sheet meta-l body portion.
In some instances it is found advisable to bend the rear portion of the wire side member 15 laterally at 20, as best illustrated in Figs. 3 and 5, forming loops adapted to engage opposite sides of the tube a to prevent the clamp from slipping thereon when the jaws are in open position.
Another feature of this invention is that in some cases it is deemed advisable to bend or offset the side wires laterally as at 21 at the rear edge of the body portion and also to bend the ends 22 laterally on the forward side of the retaining eyes 19, whereby the wires are positively prevented from longitudinal movement in the body portion, if for any reason the eye members 19 should become loosened.
The invention further consists in the provision of a cam member 23 which is provided with side pintles 24 pivotally mounted in the eyes 12 of the ears 11. This cam member is also provided with two operating handles 25 and 26 at substantially right angles to each other whereby the handle 26 will rest upon the back of the jaw when in closed position, and the handle 25 will rest on the gripping bar of the jaw when in open position,
I have shown and described one form of construction of my improved type of clamp and although speeiio terms are employed they are not intended to limit the scope of the invention, as any clamp of this character which is provided with one jaw of wire and another jaw member formed of sheet metal both of which are positively connected together will fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:
l. A tube clamp Comprising two opposing jaws one of which is formed of wire, the joint portion of the wire arms supporting said jaw being bent into oppositely disposed laterally extending loops through which the tube is adapted to pass for frietionally en,- gaging the same to prevent the clamp from slipping thereon when the jaws are open, and a cam member for closing the jaws.
2. A tube clamp comprising a sheet metal body member having two side ears and a jaw portion, an opposite jaw member constructed of a single piece of wire bent into a Copies of this patent may be obtained for double loop one end of one loop being secured to said body portion and the other eX- tending between said ears, and a eam pivoted in said ears for closing the jaws upon the tube.
3. A tube clamp comprising a sheet metal body member having twointegral side ears and a jaw portion, an opposite jaw member formed of wire having two side arms extending rearwardly between said ears and bent over and back substantially upon themselves and secured to said body member, said bend providing a joint for the jaws, and the wires at the joint being bent to form oppositely disposed laterally extending loops through which the tube is adapted to pass to riction ally engage the same, and a cam pivotally supported in said ears for closing said jaws.
