To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Gnonen H. Mown, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVatertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will ena-ble others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in heating plants and more particularly to the construction of the furnace thereof, which is adapted to heat water either for the purpose of generating steam as a heating medium or of circulating hot water as a heating medium.
The primary object of this invention is to construct a boiler of a plurality of sections, the initial section or section positioned directly over the fire bed being especially constructed to increase the heating surface thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a boiler comprising a plurality of inl dependent sections especially adapted to facilitate circulation of heated water or steam through radiators of the system with which' my invention is employed.
A still further object of the invention is to connect the boiler sections to the boiler heads to prevent the water from circulating until it has reached the proper temperature.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section of a furnace provided with boiler sections constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of one of the boiler sections.
Reference now being had lto the details of the drawings by numeral, 5 designates the fire grate and 6 the wall surrounding the usual fuel space -of a water heating furnace, the wall 7, as herein shown, being hollow and constituting a water jacket which is suitably connected with the flow and return heads 8 and 9 respectively of a heating system.

Positioned upon the wall 6 are the superimposed horizontal boiler sections 8, 9, 10 and l1 and, while I have illustrated only four of these sections, it is to be, of course, understood that I may increase or diminish the number of boiler sections according to the volume of water to be heated or steam to be generated, thereby adapting the furnace to efciently supply a heating medium for various size buildings.
Each of the horizontal boiler sections 8, 9, 10 and 11 is preferably circular in form and provided with aprons 12 which support the same in suitable spaced relation with each other to permit the products of combustion to pass therearound and up through the openings 13, which, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, are arranged in staggered relation to direct the heat in a Zig-zag course, as indicated by arrows, to enable the heat to contact with all sides of the boiler sections. The initial boiler section 8 is provided with a depending, substantially inverted cone-shaped, member 14, which terminates in close proximity to the fire bed, whereby the heating surface of this boiler section is greatly increased.
Disposed on opposite sides of the boiler are the vertically extending How and return heads 8 and 9, the flow head 8 being the same capacity as the return head 9. Communication between the flow head 8 and respective boiler sections 8, 9, 10 and 11 is provided by the nipple connections 17, which diminish in size, the uppermost nipple connection being relatively smaller than the first or nipple connection nearest the lire grate 5, while communication between the boiler sections and return head 9 is established through the nipple connections 18. These nipple connections also diminish in diameter near the top of the boiler, which construction aids in retarding the flow in the several boiler sections 8, 9, 10 and 11 in proportion to their distance from the fire until the water being heated in the sections attain a high degree of heat. Connected with the lower end of the return head 9 is a feed pipe 19, one end of the feed pipe 19 being in communication with the return pipe 20 which connects with the water jacket of the boiler through pipe 21, whereby the returning water is divided, a
vportion thereof entering the water jacket while theJ remaining portion passes to the return head 9 and is fed through the boiler sections to the flow head 8.
The upper end of the flow head 8 is connected with a iiow pipe, not shown, of a heating system. Suitable doors 22 and 23 are also provided in the furnace wall to permit an easy access to the interior thereof to ena-ble the boiler sections to be cleaned. It might further be stated that suitable packing 24 and nuts 25 insure a water tight fit between the nipple connections and heads 8 and 9.
In operation, it will be seen that water is heated in the water jacket surrounding the fire pot, said heated water passing through the lio-w head 8 where it commingles with heated water flowing through the boiler sections 8, 9, lO and 11 from where it passes to the radiators of the heating plant. The passing of the heated water from the boiler sections causes a circulation thereof with the result that the cooled water from the radiators of the system flows into the water jacket and boiler sections and is reheated. There being no means for the return water to enter the heater, except through pipes 19, and 2l and no way it can leave the heater except by way of the flow head 9', the water is forced to pass through Vand over the heated surfaces before it can escape, thus creating a positive circulation.
