OPERATING MECHANISM FOR FANS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL DOLI-IAY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Leechburg, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Mechanism for Fans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in operating mechanism for fans.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a manually operated fan in which the mechanism for fans which may be readily mounted upon the table or other support with the operating rodprojecting beneath the table and connected with a pedal. for operating the fan.
A further object of the invention is to provide a foot actuated fan operating mech anism in which the frame carrying the fan and a portion of the driving mechanism is shiftable relative to the support therefor so that when the same is elevated rotary adjustments may be made, and whch frame is held in locked position when lowered to operative position.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood,the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed. v
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a fan operating mechanism built in accordance with the present invention and partially shown in section. Fig. 2 is an end elevational View of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan View. Fig. 4; is a detail sectional view showing the fan supporting frame elevated with the driven pinions carried thereby out of engagement with the driving gear. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view of a portion of the driving mechanism detached. Fig. 6 is a detail View of a portion of a reciprocating rack bar, the driven gear and the pawl and ratchet mechanism for preventing retrograde movement. Fig. 7 includes detail sectional views of the supporting standard for the fan supporting frame showing the mannerof locking and unlocking the frame to the standard. 1
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings the reference numeral 10 designates abase support that may be of any desired configuration and is preferably constructed to enable thesame to be mounted upon a table top-or other support 11. The bottom 12 of the base support 10 is preferably shown in Figs. 1 and 5 and includes spaced vertical standards 13 having the shaft 11 journaled in the upper ends of the standards with enlarged heads at opposite ends thereof to prevent longitudinal movement. A gear 15 is loosely journaled on said shaft and, as shown-in Figs. 5 and 6, carries a laterally projecting pivoted pawl 16 springpressed as at 17, which pawl is adapted to engage with the ratchet wheel 18 keyed upon the shaft 11 as clearly shown in Fig. 6. A collar 19 holds the ratchet wheel and gear 18 and 15 in spaced relation as indicated. These parts are arranged between two of the vertical standards 13 and arranged between the central standard and the other end standard is the beveled pinion 2O keyed to the shaft 14 and held in spaced relation relative to the standards by collars 19. The base bottom 12 and the table top 11 have almed openings 21 through which projects the rack bar 22 which is in engagement with the gear 15 as is indicated in Figs. 2 and 6, there being provided a collar 23 that is adjustable upon the rack and adapted to engage the hottom of the table top 11 to limit the upward movement of the rack bar. The lower end of the rack bar 22 is connected to the pedal 24 that is tensioned as at 25 so that the rack bar 22 is normally held in its uppermost position.
A vertical standard 26 is supported by the base member 10 and is held immovable relative thereto and journaled on the vertical standard 26 is a driving gear 27 having lower level teeth 28 and upper crown teeth 29, while an upstanding central tubular boss 30 is carried by the driving gear 27 for purposes presently to appear.
The fan supporting frame is loosely mounted upon the vertical standard 26 and is adapted to be held immovable relative thereto by devices later to be described. The fan supporting frame is preferably rectangular in side elevation and includes verconstructed as more clearlv tical side bars 31 and 32 and upper horizontal shaft 33 and lower horizontal bar 34:, While a central rod 35 connects the upper and lower cross bars. A portion of the mechanism for operating the fan is carried by the fan carrying frame and includes a pair of gears 36 and 36 journaled on stub shafts carried by the side bar 32 and the arm 37 formed on the bottom rail 3%. A sprocket chain 38 connects the bearing shaft of'the upper gear 36 with the shaft 39 journaled in the side bar 32 and the central rod 35 as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. A gear 4:0 is keyed to the shaft 39 and is in mesh with the pinion 11 keyed upon the shaft 33. An enlarged gear 42 is fixed to the shaft 33 and is in mesh with the pinion 13 fixed upon the fan shaft 4a that is journaled in the central rod 35 and the side bar 31. The fan shaft e 1 extends through the side bar and carries on the projecting end thereof the fan wheel 45.
The lower end of the central rod 35 is made tubular as is shown in Figs. 1 and 7 so that the vertical standard 26 is received in the tubular portion thereof for supporting the. fan carrying frame and in the position shown in Fig. 1 the lower bar 3 1 rests upon the tubular boss extension 30 on the driving gear 27, and in this position the lower gear wheel 36 is in mesh with the teeth 29 upon the driving gear 27, it being noted that the beveled pinion 20 on the drive shaft 14: is in mesh with the lower teeth 28 upon the said gear. When the fan carrying frame is in the position shown in Fig. 1 the spring latch 46 carried by the central rod 35 has the free end thereof projectvertical standard 26 which will prevent relative movement of the fan carrying frame and base support '10. lVhen it is desired to change the direction of air current, the fan carrying frame is elevated by the hand hold 48 which will cause the spring latch 16 to be automatically disengaged from the openings 17 and moved to the position shown in Figs. 4: and 7, and in which position the fan carrying frame may be moved to the desired angle as is well understood.
In the operation of the device, it being understood that the base support is preferably mounted upon a table top, the operator may reciprocate the rack bar 22 by pressing on the tensioned pedal 2 1 with the foot which will cause the gear 15 to be revolved, and such movement communicated to the driving shaft 14 by the tensioned pawl 16 carried by the said gear which is in mesh with the ratchet wheel 18 fixed upon the said shaft. The shaft and beveled pinion are simultaneously revolved and the said Gopies of this patent may be obtained for pinion being in mesh with the teeth 28 upon the driving gear will cause the gear to be revolved and such motion commumcated to the meshing pinions 36 and through the re-' maining driving mechanism carried by the fan supporting frame, to the fan shaft 4 1.
The pawl and ratchet mechanism shown in Figs. 5 and 6 will prevent retrograde movement of the shaft 14 and the pinion 20 and the same may be continuously revolved in one direction by repeated reciprocations of the rack bar 22.
