Be it known that I, GEORGE C. Nonos, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Shaft-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shaft hangers, and consists of certain improvements in structures of this character made of pressed sheet metal whereby I am enabled to materially strengthen the same at a vital point.
The general construction of my hanger is substantially similar to that shown and dedescribed in the patent of H. T. Hallowell, No. 7 67 ,225, dated Aug. 9, 1904, and the feature of my present invention is the provision of reinforcing means for the purpose of strengthening the leg and foot of the hanger, particularly the junction point ofsuch leg and foot, and the method or mo'de of assembling, shaping and attaching such reinforcing means with the legs. These and other features of my invention more fully described hereinafter are fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

vention has been applied comprise in general legs of pressed up sheet metal, and in the present instance such legs, indicated at 1, have substantially centrally disposed longitudinal ribs 2, and terminate in feet 3. In
. addition, the legs of my improved hanger, as
shown in the accompanying drawings, may be provided with rolled edges 4. The legs may be connected at the lower ends by a cross piece 5, and at a substantially central point' by a cross piece 6; said cross piece carrying bolts 7, with suitable lock nuts 8 for engagement with a box 9, which, as indicated in the present instance, may be also provided with horizontally disposed positionmg bolts 10. If desired, however, the hanger may be of the type illustrated in the patent of' H. T. Hallowell, No. 767 ,223, of Aug. 9, 1904, or of a construction of the same general character in which the two legs are integral. The legs are shaped or turned outwardly by suitable dies to form the feet whereby the hanger may be secured to a beam, joist, girder or other supporting structure, and provision is made for the passage of bolts through said feet for the purpose of securing thehanger in place. In the use of these hangers any lateral play occasioned by longitudinal movement of the shaft tends to strain the feet at the bolt connections and cause the hanger to get out of plumb, thereby affecting its utility, and in many instances destroying its usefulness'. To avoid this danger, I provide reinforcing means for use at the junction of the leg and foot, and when said leg' and foot are integral the reinforcing means and the leg will be bent simultaneously, thereby forming the foot and its reinforcing means on the same bend or curve. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, 'such reinforcing means consists of a plurality of' plates secured to the outside of the leg by rivets 11, one of said plates, indicated at 12, extending from a point a short distance above the cross piece 6 and having the same lcontour as the legs and foot and the bend connecting the same so as Vto extend under the foot, as clearly illustrated in the drawings. This strengthening plate may be of the same weight of metal as the hanger, and may be hooked under the beaded or rolled edge 4 of the leg of the same. The other plate, indicated at 13, provided as additional strengthening means, may be and is preferably, as Vshown in the drawings, of a metal heavier than the plate 12, and may be secured in place by rivets 14 which pass through the leg and also through the reinforcing plate 12. This reinforcing plate may .also be caught under the beaded or rolled edge 4 of the leg of the hanger. IVhile I prefer to form the legs of the hanger with beaded or rolled edges engag ing and overlying the reinforcing plates, their employment is not absolutely essential, nor is it necessary that the edge be turned down into actual contact with said reinforcing plates.
In some instances, particularly when using heavier metal to form the shaft hanger, I
may employ a single reinforcing element for the leg and foot portion, of the same ply as the metal of the hanger, as indicated in the sectional view, Fig. 5, which bears the saine relation to the structure as the sectional view illustrated in Fig. 3, and in which 1a represents the leg of the hanger, and 12 the reinforcing plate. In other instances, the heavier reinforcing` means may be interposed between the wall of the shaft hanger and the thinner reinforcing member, as clearly shown in the sectional view, Fig. 6, which corresponds with the sectional views, Figs. 3 and 5, and in which 1b is the shaft hanger leg, l2" one reinforcing member and 13" the other and heavier section.
In Fig. 7, I have shown the leg 1C with its edges 4a turned over against the reinforcing plate 12a. In this instance, the metal of the leg and reinforcing plate may be substantially heavy and of the same weight or gage. In Fig. 8, the leg may be provided with a flanged edge 4b, and the reinforcing plate may be secured in place by rivets 11n.
When employing the heavier metal to form the shaft hanger legs, as shown in Figs. 5 and 7, the longitudinal rib 2 may, if desired, be omitted.
After the blank and reinforcing plates are assembled they are shaped by suitable dies and a depression 15 may be formed on the upper or inner side of the foot to additionally strengthen the same and afford a seat t'o receive a cross piece 16, which may be secured to said feet by rivets 17 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. For the passage of bolts securing the hanger in place, the foot composed of the plurality of plates may be apertured at 18, and the complete hanger may have four of such apertures, two in each foot. In other instances, a single aperture may be provided, preferably centrally disposed, taking the place of the rivets 17, which in such instance would be changed to take positions occupied by the apertures 18 as shown in Fig. 4. In such instance the cross piece 16 may or may not be used.
In Figs. 9 to 15, inclusive, I have shown views illustIt ting the manner`of assembling the parts to form the shaft hanger leg and reinforcing means preparatory to shaping or forming the same by means of suitable dies. In Fig. 9, a partlyfinished leg blank is shown, with edge flanges turned up which subsequently form the rolled or beaded edges 4. The reinforcing plates 12 and 13 are shown in place adjacent the end of the blank in Figs. 10 and 11. Fig. 12 is a sectional view showing one step in the formation of the leg, which consists lin turning over Vthe beaded edge, and Fig. 13 shows a further step which consists in giving the leg and the reinforcing plates the angular bend to form the foot portion of the leg. Fig. 14 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating the finished shape of the leg and the reinforcing means after the structure has been put through the dies in the usual manner. Instead of bending or rolling the edge as shown in Fig. 12, it maybe turned over against the reinforcing platein the manner illustrated at 4a in Fig. 15.
Although I have shown reinforcing plates secured in place in a specific manner, it will be understood, of course, that they may be held in different ways while being shaped, and permanently secured to the leg in various ways; all of which is within the scope of my invention. In some instances the plates may be partially riveted before the leg is finished.
In some instances the leg may stop at the foot portion, and the foot may be formed independently; in some instances wholly by reinforcing plates secured to said leg in substantially the manner illustrated in the other views of the structure, and in other instances by separate pieces secured to said reinforcing plates.
I claim:
1. VrI`he combination with a shaft hanger element of pressed sheet metal comprising a leg and a foot thereof, of reinforcing means made of pressed sheet metal and disposed at the point of `junction between said leg and foot, said reinforcing means following the contour of said leg and foot and contacting therewith throughout its length and being additionally reinforced by a rib formation in the leg and foot and the reinforcing means.
2. In a shaft hanger of pressed sheet metal, the combination with a leg and a foot thereof, of reinforcing means comprising a plurality of similarly shaped plates disposed at the point of junction between the leg and foot, said reinforcing plates following the contour of said leg and foot and contacting therewith throughout its length and being additionally reinforced by a rib formation in the leg and foot and the reinforcing plates.
3. In a shaft hanger, a leg and foot integrally connected, said members having continuous beaded edges, and a reinforcing plate at the junction of said foot and leg Iconfined in place by said beaded edges.
4. In a shaft hanger, a leg and foot integrally connected, said members having continuous beaded edges, and a plurality of reinforcing plates at the 4junction of said foot and leg confined in place by said beaded edges.
5. In a shaft hanger of pressed sheet metal, the combination of a leg, a foot, said leg having rolled edges, reinforcing means at the junction of the foot and leg engaged and retained by said rolled edges, and means for securing said parts in rigid relationship.
6. In a shaft hanger 0f pressed sheet metal, the combination of a leg, a foot integral therewith, said leg and foot having rolled edges, reinforcing means at the j unction of the foot and leg engaged and retained by said rolled edges, and rivets for securing said parts in rigid relationship.
7. In a shaft hanger of pressed sheet metal, the combination of a leg, a foot, said leg having rolled edges, reinforcing means at the ljunction of the foot and leg retained by said rolled edges, and supplemental means for securing said parts in rigid relationship.
8. In a shaft hanger of pressed sheet metal, the combination of a leg, a foot integral therewith, said leg and foot having rolled edges, reinforcing means at the junction of the foot and leg retained by said rolled edges, and supplemental means for securing said parts in rigid relationship.

12. In a shaft hanger of pressed sheet metal, the combination of a leg, a foot integral therevvith, said leg and foot having rolled edges, reinforcing means at the junction of the foot and leg retained by said rolled edges, and supplemental means for securing said parts in rigid relationship, the leg and foot having a depression forming an external rib and the reinforcing plates conforming to the same contour.
13. In a shaft hanger of pressed sheet metal, the combination of a leg, a foot, said leg having rolled edges and a centrally disposed longitudinal rib, a plurality of reinforcing members at the junction of the foot and leg retained by said rolled edges, and rivets for securing said parts in rigid relationship, said foot and the reinforcing plates engaging the same having a depression in line with the rib of said leg.

In a shaft hanger of pressed sheet metal, the combination of a leg, a foot integral therewith, said leg and foot having rolled edges, a plurality of reinforcing members at the junction of the foot and leg retained by said rolled edges, and rivets for securing said parts in rigid relationship, the leg and foot having a. depression forming an external rib and the reinforcing plates conforming to the same contour.

The combination with a shaft hanger element of pressed sheet metal including a leg and a foot for the same, of sheet metal reinforcing means' disposed at the point of junction between said leg andfoot, said reinforcing means following the contour of said parts at their junction and being additionally reinforced by a rib formation which includes the leg and foot.
16. The combination with a shaft hanger element of pressed sheet metal including a leg and a foot integral with the same, of reinforcing means formed of a plurality of sheet metal plates disposed at the point of junction between said leg and foot, said plates following the contour of said parts at their junction and being additionally reinforced by a rib formation which includes the leg and foot.
17. The combination with a shaft hanger element of pressed sheet metal including a leg and a foot, said structure having turnedover marginal edges, of independent reinforcing means at the junction of the foot and leg, and means for securing said parts in rigid relationship, said parts being additionally reinforced by a rib formation in the leg, foot and reinforcing means adjacent the junction of said leg and foot.
18. The combination with a shaft hanger element of pressed sheet metal including a leg .and a foot integral therewith, said structure having turned-over marginal edges, of independent reinforcing means at the junction of the foot and leg engaged and retained by said turned edges, and means for securing said parts in rigid relationship, said parts being additionally reinforced by a rib formation in the leg, foot and reinforcing means adjacent the junction of said leg and foot.
19. In a shaft hanger of pressed sheet metal, the combination of a leg, a foot, sheet metal reinforcing means at the junction of said leg with its foot, means for confining said reinforcing means in relative position with respect to the leg and foot, and means for securing the parts in rigid relationship.
20. In a shaft hanger of pressed sheet metal, the combination of a leg, a foot integral. therewith, said structure having turned edges, sheet metal reinforcing means at the junction of the leg and foot, said turned edges engaging the reinforcingl means in relative position with respect to the leg and foot, and means for securing the parts in rigid relationship.

The combination with a shaft hanger element made of sheet metal including a leg and foot, of reinforcing means disposed at the point of junction of said leg and foot, said reinforcing means following the contour of said leg and foot and contacting therewith throughout its length and being additionally reinforced by a rib formation common to the leg, foot and reinforcing means.
22. In a shaft hanger of sheet metal, the combination with a leg and a foot thereof disposed at an angle with respect to each other, of a plurality of` reinforcing plates disposed at the junction of the leg and foot, said reinforcing plates following the contour of said leg and foot with one of the same in contact therewith throughout its length, said structure being additionally reinforced by a rib formation common to the leg, foot and reinforcing plates.
23. In a shaft hanger of sheet metal, the combination of a leg, a foot, said leg having rolled edges throughout its length, reinforcing means at the junction of the leg and foot and following the contour of the saine, and means for securing said reinforcing means to the leg and foot, a portion of said rolled edges overlying' the edges of the reinforcing means.
Q4. In a shaft hanger of sheet metal, the combination with a leg and a foot thereof, of reinforcing means disposed at the junction of and following the contour of the leg and foot, means for securing said reinforcing means in rigid relationship with the leg and foot, the marginal edges of said leg and foot being outwardly turned or rolled to oyerlap the reinforcing means, and the turned edges of said leg extending substantially throughout its length.

In a shaft hanger of sheet metal, the combination of a leg, a foot, reinforcing means at the junction of the leg and foot, and means for securing' said reinforcing means to the leg and foot, said leg having turned or rolled edges throughout its length with a portion overlapping the edges of the reinforcing' means. 2G. In a shaft hanger of sheetmetal, the combination of a leg, a foot, said leg having turned or rolled edges and being grooved longitudinally to form an upstanding rib, and reinforcing means at the unction of the leg and foot, said reinforcing means being engaged by the rolled edges of the leg.

In a shaft hanger, a sheet metal leg having a foot integral therewith, reinforcing plates extending from said leg into the foot and constituting an element thicker than the leg body, said foot being apertured through said reinforcing plates for the passage of retaining bolts, and means for rigidly securing' said reinforcing plates to the leg and foot.
28. In a shaft hanger, a sheet metal leg having a longitudinal rib substantially centrally disposed, and inturned beaded edges flanking said rib, a foot, and a plurality of reinforcing plates connecting said leg and foot and underlying said beaded edges.
29, In a shaft hanger, a leg and foot of pressed sheet metal, said members having inwardly disposed beaded edges, and reinforcing means disposed at the junction of said foot and leg and confined in place by said beaded edges.
30. In a shaft hanger, a leg and foot of pressed sheet metal, said members having inwardly disposed beaded edges, and a plurality of reinforcing plates at the junction of said foot and leg and confined in place by said beaded edges.
