"lower extremities of the front rods 26 will be normally held in spaced relation and allow the ring 30 to be resiliently sprung within the groove 29 with which the lugs 5 are provided. With the ring so positioned,
the guard will be a rigid structure and capable of protecting and housing a fan 31 therein. -n the other hand when the ring is removed, the front rods, cross 4bars and Securing arms may be rearwardly folded.
Thefan 31 is mounted upon and rotated by the shaft 7 and includes a plurality of blades 38 which are provided with the tips 32 hinged to the mainf portion of the blade as at 33 whereby the blades may also be rearwardly folded as illustrated in Fig. 3. The provision of the rearwardly folding frame and blades provide that the fan may be folded to occupy little space, thus rendering it conveniently portable and economically transportable. The pedestal may be also rearwardly folded and held in such position by the front rods 26 when in their folded position. The hinge connections 33 of the fan blades are made exceedingly stii which prevent the fan blades from being forced rearwardly by the forward propulsion of air which effect, it is to be noted, is s also counteracted in a large measure bythe centrifugal force of the rotating fan. The stift' hinge also provides that the blades havy ing been collapsed as illustrated in Fig. 3 will rest upon and bear against the securing arms 22 and hold the 'saine in a collapsed position, which in turn holds the pedestal standard folded as illustrated.' This entire 4device having been once folded will retain Such position allowing it to be conveniently v.handled and carried about. The resiliency of `the securing arms 22, cross bars 24, and \front rods ,27 insures that the ring, having once assumed the position within the groove ',129 will remain securely so locked.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, a body, a rotary fan carried thereby, and a ylcollapsible fan guard carried by the body and foldable-thereagainst away from the plane of rotation of the fan.
.p-f 2., In a device Yof the character described,
a body, a rotary fan carried thereby whose blades have tips foldable away from the plane of rotation of the fan against the body, and a collapsible fan guard carried by the body and foldable thereagainst in a direction similar to said tips.
3. In a device of the character described, a body, a rotary fan carried thereby whose blades have tips foldable away from the plane of rotation of the fan against the body, a collapsible fan guard carried by the body and foldable thereagainst in a direction similar to said tips, and a foldablc supporting member for the body foldable adjacent the same.
hln a device of the character described, a body, a rotary fan carried thereby, and a fan guard carried by the body embodying supporting arms pivoted to the body foldable rearwardly against the body away from the plane of rotation of the fan, front rods pivoted to said arms, and means for detachably, securing said rods together.
5. In a device of the character described, a body, a rotary fan carried thereby and a collapsible fan guard carried by the body embodying pivot-ally connected sections foldable rearwardly against the body away from the plane of rotation of the fan, and means for fastening them together when .they are unfolded.
6. In a deviceV of the character described, a body, and a fan guard carried thereby embodying arms pivoted to the body, cross elements pivoted to said arms, front rods pivoted to said elements, said arms, elements and rods having limited swinging movef ments relative to one another whereby they are held in place when they are unfolded,
the guard in place when unfolded.
7'. A fan body having a fan and fan guard each foldable against the' body away from the plane of rotation of the fan.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signaand a ring engageable with said rods to hold.
