To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. J 01INSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Firearms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a broken view partly in right hand side elevation, and partly in vertical section, of a. firearm constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a plan view of the forearm. Fig. 3 a broken underside view of the rear portion of the gun-barrel with the forearmlock applied thereto. Fig. 4L a view in transverse section on the line 4-1 of Fig. 1. My invention relates to an improvement in firearms, the object being to provide simple and effective means for securing the forearm to the gun-barrel so as to prevent its movement in any direction with respect thereto.
Vith these ends in view my invention consists in a firearm characterized by a. forearmlock having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a forearm-lock consisting of a sleeve 5 adapted to encircle the rear portion of the barrel 6 which is formed with an annular shoulder 7 against which the rear end of the said sleeve abuts. Upon its lower portion, the sleeve 5 is formed with an integral, depending rectangular lug 8 corresponding in width to the width of the sleeve and having its rear end formed with a central longitudinal slit 9 the forward end of which intersects a circular opening 10 formed in the lug midway the length thereof, whereby the sleeve is adapted to be sprung sufficiently to be firmly clamped upon the cylindrical portion 11 of the barrel 6 by means of a binding-screw 12 passed laterally through the slit rear end of the h1g8, the said cylindrical portion 11 of the barrel 6 corresponding in width to the width of the sleeve 5 and being located directly in front of the annular shoulder 7 aforesaid of the barrel. The forward end of the lug is formed with a. threaded bore 13 for the reception of a retaining and locking screw 1 1 which is passed upward into it through a vertical opening 15 formed in the forearm 16, the extreme upper end of the screw being reduced as at 17 and entered into a corresponding circular recess 18 in the lower face of the gun-barrel 6. -T he lower face of the forearm 16 is formed with a recess 19 for the reception of an escutcheon 20 which provides a seat for the head 21 of the screw 14. Under this construction, the screw 14 not only firmly secures the forearm 16 to the forearmlock, but also secures the forearm-lock to the barrel 6. The screw 14: thus supplements the clamping action of the screw 12. As herein shown, though this is not necessary, the sleeve 5 of the forearm-lock is formed upon its upper face with a transverse undercut groove 22 for the reception of the dovetail rib of any suitable sight, not shown. I claim 1. In a. firearm, the combination with the barrel thereof, of a forearm, a forearm-lock consisting of a yielding sleeve adapted to be applied to the barrel. and having a depending, split lug, means applied to the lug for clamping the sleeve upon the barrel, and a screw passing upward through the forearm into the said lug for securing the forearm in place.
2. In a firearm, the combination with the barrel thereof, of a. forearm, a forearm-lock consisting of a sleeve adapted to fit over the barrel and formed with a. depending lug having its rear end split, a binding-screw passing through the split portion of the said lug for clamping the forearm-lock upon the barrel, and a screw passing upward through the forearm into the said lug for securing the forearm thereto.
8. In a firearm, the combination with the barrel thereof, of a forearm, a forearm lock having a yielding sleeve adapted to fit over the barrel and formed with a de pending lug, means applied to the said lug for clamping the sleeve upon the barrel, and
- a screw passing upward through the forearm into said lug and entering the barrel for securing the forearm to the lock and the look to the barrel.
4:. In a firearm, the combination with the barrel thereof of a forearm, a forearm-lock coiiuprising a yielding sleeve adapted to be applied to the barrel, having its upper face formed with a transverse undercut groove for the application of a sight and the said sleeve being also formed with a depending split lug, means applied to the said lug for clamping the said sleeve upon the barrel,
and a screw passing upward through the THOMAS 'C. JOHNSON.
