Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARRETT S. SHEPARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Linesville, in the county of Crawford, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cattle-Stanchions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cattle stanchions.
One object of the invention is to provide a pivoted stanchion with a locking means which will effectively hold the movable stanchion bar against release.
Another object is to provide means for releasing the locking member which will at the same time swing the movable stanchion bar into open position.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a cattle stanchion made in accordance with my invention, the same being shown in closed and locked position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the parts in the position of Fig. 1. F ig. 3 is a similar section showing the stanchion in open position. Fig. 1 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents the frame of a stall, the upper transverse member of which is formed with a longitudinal slot 11 formed vertically therethrough. Mounted to rotate on a vertical pivot 12 in the lower member of the stall frame is a block 13, while mounted in the upper member is a vertical pivot 1 1 on which is carried a block 15, this block being of greater length than the block 13 as shown. Rigidly connecting the corresponding ends of the blocks 13 and 15 is the relatively stationary vertical stanchion bar 16. Pivotally connected in the other end of the block 13 is the lower end of the movable stanchion bar 17, the upper end of which is arranged to move in the longitudinal open ended slot 18 formed in the block 15. Pivoted within the outer end of the slot 18 is a pivoted latch 19, the inner end of which is arranged to engage on a shoulder 20 formed on the adjacent edge at the upper end of the movable bar 17 Passing through the pivoted latch 19 and secured at one end to the bar 17 just below the block 15 is a cable 21, the other end being suitably secured to the outer end of the latch and provided with a depending hand piece 22.
In released or open position the latch is swung upwardly until its inner end is dis posed within the slot 11, thus holding the blocks against pivotal movement. When the latch is swung upwardly the bar 17 falls against the latch and holds it in this position. The animal is driven into the stall until its head passes between the open bars 16 and 17. By swinging the bar 17 toward the animals neck, the end of the cable which is attached to the bar will pull the latch down into engagement with the shoulder of the bar, thus locking the bar in closed position. To release the bar, the hand piece is pulled downwardly so as to swing the latch upwardly into the slot 11, this movement causing the cable to pull on the bar 17 and swing it into open position.
What is claimed is:
A cattle stanchion including upper and lower members, a relatively stationary bar connecting the members, the upper of the members being provided with an open-ended slot, a movable stanchion bar pivotally mounted in the lower member, and having its upper end movable in the slot, a pivoted latch mounted in the slot and arranged for engagement with the upper end of the movable bar, said latch being formed with openings therethrough, a. flexible element extending through the openings of the latch and connected to the movable stanchion bar whereby when the flexible element is pulled the latch will be positively raised out of engagement with the movable bar and the said bar subsequently and positively moved in a direction away from the stationary bar.
