TOEN FRANCIS BOORAEM, OF GREENW'ICH, CONNECTICUT.
PLUNGE-BATH TILE AND TERRA-GOTTA CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed June 16, 1915.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FRANCIS Boo- RAEM, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Greenwich, in the county of Fairfield and Sta-te of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plunge-Bath Tile and Terra-Cotta Construction, of which thel following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in and relating to plunge bath tile and terra cotta construction, and has for an object to provide in such construction a tile unit provided with gripping means, to replace the metal handles or rails heretofore in use, to enable the bathers to emerge from the bath.
A further object is to give to the plunge bath a more harmonious treatment than has heretofore been possible with the metal rails used, and to provide such a construction which may be easily kept in a clean and sanitary condition. l
lith these and other objects in view, my invention comprises the novel features, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view partly in section of a plunge bath embodying my improved construction; Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a perspective view partly in'section of a modified form of my invention; and Fig. 4l is a sectional view thereof.
Similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Fig. 1 thereof, the plunge bath construction comprises the tile step or ladder units 10, thel non-slipping floor tiles 11, the corner tiles 12 and 13 forming a gutter 1-1, and the enameled bricks 15 forming the walls. vided my improved gripping unit 16, having the overhanging portim 17, and provided with the inclined recesses 18, 19, forming hand grips. rlhe surface of the unit 16 is flush with the surface of the floor. Channels 20, 21 serve to drain the water dripping in the recesses, into the gutter.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Above the said ladder units is pro-V Paeemec aug. s, icio.
Serial No. 34,331.
The ends of the channels, it will be noted, are obscured from view by means of the overhanging portion 17 and the corner tiles 12. The said gripping unit may be of hollow construction, as shown in` Fig. 2, or, if desired, other suitable known construction may be employed.
In the form of construction shown in Fig. 3, two members 22 and 23 are provided with upright portions 2l and overhanging portions 25. The said upright portions are provided with an inclined `surface 26 having a plurality of inclined recesses 27 therein forming hand grips for both the right and left hands. Each of the said recessed portions is provided with a channel 2S, which connects with a main channel 29 having its outlet end under the overhanging portion 25, and thereby obscured from sight.
It will be seen that with my improved construction, a very convenient and sanitary gripping means is provided for use in connection with the tile ladder or step construction of tile plunge baths, and because of its complete harmony with the general surroundings of such plunge baths will have a decidedly stimulating eHect on the esthetic sense of the bathers.
I have illustrated preferred and satisfactory forms of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. A tile unit for plunge baths, comprising a plurality of exposed walls, in different planes, one of said walls being provided with a recess forming a hand grip, and means connecting said recesses with another of said walls, to form a drain for said recess.
2. A tile unit for plunge baths, comprising an exposed front wall, a horizontally disposed exposed wall provided with recesses forming hand grips, and means connecting said recesses with said front wall to form a dra-in for said recesses.
3. In a tile unit for plunge baths, an exposed face provided with a recess forming a hand grip, and a channel connected to said recess and extending in a direction away from said exposed face to form a drain for said recess.
4; A tile unit for plunge baths, compris- In testimony that I claim the foregoing ing a front Wall, an overhanging portion, an as my invention, I have signed my name in upper portion provided with a plurality of presence of two subscribing Witnesses. inclined recesses forming hand grips, and JOHN FRANCIS BOORAEM. means connecting said recesses With said Vitnesses: front Wall to forni a drain for the said re- Jos. P. BisBAND,
cesses. S. LEWIS MATTEM.
