To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Arman H. TAcr,'a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elkins'Park, Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful .lreheater, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pre-heaters arranged for engagement with furnace doors,
preferably tobe supported thereby and swing therewith.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a preferably horizontal. frame having air inlet and outlet openings upon the toward the door and furnace respectively and having lines ofair fiow mainly transyerse to the length of the p're-heater',
f A further purpose of my invention is to provide alternately reversing, transversely directed, communicating air passages progressingfromthe air inlet at the door end of the pre-heater to the discharge end by successive stages preferably increasing in cross section with each progression.
' A further purpose of my invention is to provide a furnace pre-heater with support through its air inlet and with air passages preferably providing greater cross section for the air as its temperature is increased.
A further purpose of my invention is to provide a furnace pro-heater in which differences of cross section are obtained by relatively sloping the outer faces of the pre-heater frame and in' which the metal inclosmg air passages of larger'section is exposed to the greater heat.
Further purposes of my invention will appear in the specification and claims hereof.
I have preferred to illustrate my. invention by one form thereof which has proved most practical and efficient and which at the "same time well illustrates the theory of my invention.
Figure 1 is a top plan view partly In section of the preferred form of my preheater with the top plate removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the middle of the preferred form of my invention in one location of use. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of another form of my pre-heater.

I have preferred to illustrate my invention in use upon a furnace door in which the attachment is simplified by the suitable location of a boss 2 upon the door, so that Specification of Letters Patent.

Since my present invention does not concern the restriction or control of the inlet air at the end 5, I have selected a simple form of support, easily available wherever the door is provided with a boss.
Upon the opposite end from the door the pipe 3 is shown as screwed' intola boss upon or in the end of the heater franie as at '6, soas tosupport the heater by its inlet pipe.
I prefer to make this end 6 integral with the bottom plate 7 which I show as carry ing the partitions 814, and to close 'the upper surface by the plate 15 held in position by any suitable means, as bolts 16. I have selected transverse direction for the passages formed between the walls or partitions 814 for the reasonthat I desire to have the air engage with the'edge walls 17 18 at the points of change of direction, since these edge walls are outside walls and relatively highly heated, increasing the efliciency of the device. I have shown the passages formed successively by these walls 81 l as of constantly increasing width and correspondingly greater cross section as the air advances to its more highly heated end of the pre-heater and itself increases in temperature.
I have preferred to positively support the pro-heater upon the furnace door by means of the inlet air pipe in order to interfere as little as possible with free access to the fire during the time that the door is open, since the pro-heater may thus be swung entirely free from the heater alle At the end of the heater nearest the fire, I provide the discharge openings 19 and have arranged for nearly uniform distribution of the air among these openings, by discharging the outgoing warmed air into the final chamber through the opening 20 in wall 14, against baflle plates 21, which are separated by a shorter distance, preferably, than the width of the opening 20.
In the form shown in Fig. 3, I have spaced the partitions for wall 8-14', uniformly and have provided for increase of ios cross sectional area as the air progresses to claims.
It will be evident that my device may be quickly and easily attached, preferably rigidly, to the stove door; that it gives direct impact of the air, at the point of reversal of air direction, against the heated side. walls of the frame, and that it offers greater extent of engagement with continuous exposed and heated walls, shown as top and bottom walls, or with the ends where reversed, and successively increased cross section of passages from the point of inlet to the point of discharge.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character stated, a
furnace door, a relatively flat pre-heater frame adapted to be mounted thereon, having outer walls and intermediate partitions arranged transversely to the length of the heater and across it from one face to the other in the direction of its thickness, sides exposed to the heat at the points of change of direction of the hot air currents, each side being spaced from alternate partitions to provide air passages at the sides, and a pipe for mounting the pre-heater within the furnace to swing with the furnace door supplying air to the pre-heater.
2. In a device of the character stated, a pre-heater frame having fiat faces and inlet discharge openings, connecting partition members transverse to the length of the heater embracing successively increased cross sections from the point of air inlet to the point of discharge, and sides exposed to the heat of the furnace, against which the air is turned in its progression from one transverse passage to another and a pipe mount therefor adapted to supply air to the section of least cross sectional area.
3. In a device of the character stated, top and bottom pre-heater walls, intermediate partitions embracing substantially rectan gular areas of successively/increasing cross sections and edge walls, in combination with an inlet connection and an end wall having spaced apertures, and spaced bafile plates sloping with respect to the partitions and distributing the air among these apertures,

In a device of the character stated, a pre-heater frame of relatively flat form having substantially parallel faces and inlet and discharge openings, connecting parti tion members transverse to the length of the heater, alternate partitions terminating at a distance from opposite sides of't'he frame to provide longitudinal passages connecting the spaces between the partitions, the partitions being spaced progressively different distances apart from the inlet to-- ward the point of discharge and sides eX-' posed to the heat of the furnace against which the'air is turned in its progression from one transverse passage formed to another in combination with an inlet air pipe for the pre-heater, which pipe also forms the support for it.
