Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELIAS LIPINER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 1013 Simpson street, borough of Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVrapping-Paper- Roll-Printing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a detachable device for printing advertisement matter on roll wrapping paper as the same is drawn off the roll.
The invention is designed for use on roll wrapping paper racks and for printing on flat surfaces and provides a compact, practical, inexpensive and substantial machine for printing on roll wrapping paper, paper bags and boxes, etc. It may also be used for various other purposes, wherein it is found applicable. It is simple in construction, automatic, strong, durable and efiicient in its use, and can be quickly attached to or removed from any wrapping paper rack.
One object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character. A second object of the invention is to provide an improved spring arrangement for holding the printing mechanism in proper position against the wrapping paper roll.
A third object of the invention is to provide an improved device for attaching the printing device to the paper roll rack or stand.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention provides a printing device with a printing roller havlng a quick and simple means of changing an advertisement thereon, a thorough means of inking said roller advertisement, a spring means for bringing said printing devicein printing contact with a roll of wrapping paper, and a simple means for attaching the device to a roll paper rack and other arrangements of simple parts more specifically outlined in the accompanying drawings, wherein lies the complete embodiment of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of references indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as an entirety applied to a wrapping paper roll-rack or stand. Fig.
2 is a transverse section through the stand and printing device. Fig. 3 is an end view of the device showing the spring used to top 12. Extending between the brackets 11 is a shaft 13 which carries a roll 11 of wrapping paper. On this roll of paper rests the usual cutter 15, the same being connected pivotally to the brackets by arms 16.
The attachment embodies a clamp having upper and lower parallel arms 17 and 18, the latter being provided with a slot 19 opening outwardly. The upper arm is provided with a screw threaded opening wherein is fitted a clamp screw 20. Depending from the clamp are spaced ears 21 wherethrough passes a bolt 22. Suspended pivotally from this bolt 22 by a lug 23, which fits between the cars 21, is a casing 21 wherein is revolubly mounted a printing roll 25 provided with a longitudinal groove26 arranged to receive the ends of a printing band 27 preferably formed of rubber or the like elastic material. The ends of this band are secured in the slot by a binding strip 28, the same being fastened to the printing roll by screws 28. In the casing 24: is also revolubly mounted an inking roll 29 provided with a circumferential pad 30 of absorbent material, the journals of the printing roll and inking roll being forced toward each other by springs'31.
Mounted in the slot 19 is the bight 32 of a U-shaped spring having its legs 33 coiled intermediate their ends about the bolt 22 and terminating in pressing relation against the outside of the casing as at 34, to force the printing roll in contact with the wrap ping paper. The slot 19 performs a very important function, inasmuch as by permitting the bight or loop 32 to have a sliding movement therein, the pressure of the legs 33 will be equalized in such a manner that resistance to withdrawal of the paper from the roll will be the same whether the roll be large or small, and the character of the printing will be practically the same. This will readily be understood when it is recognized that when a fresh roll of paper is placed in the stand, the casing will be swung upward to such a distance as to place the legs under comparatively heavy strain, which, under ordinary conditions, would cause the initial printing to be heavy, and gradually to become lighter as the diameter of the roll is decreased. With the arrangement shown, however, when a fresh roll is positioned, the legs 33 will be flexed to store up energy for printing operations, and at the same time, the bight 32 will move backward in the slot. Now, as the paper is gradually unwound from the roll, the legs 33 will of course exert pressure on the casing, but owing to the fact that the bight 32 will move outward in the slot, the pressure of the legs on the casing will be equalized, thus to cause the printing to be of even character throughout the entire length of theroll of paper.
The application of the device to the wrap ping paper roll rack or stand is clearly shown in Fig. 1 wherein it is seen that the clamp is adjusted to the top 12 so that the spring forces the printing roller against the roll of wrapping paper.
In operation of the device, when the Wrapping paper is drawn off the paper roll the friction between the paper and the printing roll will cause the latter to rotate and the spring will hold the printing surface in potion to print an advertisement on the paper as it is drawn from the roll.
It will be seen that it is very easy to remove the printing band from the roll by sired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as come within the scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention,
what I desire to claim and secure by Letters K Patent, is
A device of the character described comprising a clamp having an arm provided with a longitudinal slot, a casing pivoted to the clamp and carrying printing and inlring mechanisms, and a spring having its intermediate portion coiled about the pivot of the clamp, one end formed into a pressure member to bear upon the casing, and its other end formed into a loop to have a slidr 2 ing engagement with the slot, whereby to equalize the pressure exerted on the casing throughout the limit of its swing.
