Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1916.
Application iled May 27, 1916. Serial No. 100,303.
Y 10 all whom 25 may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH GoNsIon, WILLIAM FRANK, and CHRISTIAN SCHNEIDER, all citizens of the United States except Josnrn GoNsIoR, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Medina, in the county of Stutsman and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weapons, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in weapons.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a weapon having a readily detachable blade or bayonet whereby the same is employable as a sword or dagger whenever desired.
A further object of the device is the provision of a fire arm in the form of a revolver having a removably carried bayonet or sword blade in substantial longitudinal alinement with the grasping handle of the revolver whereby the weapon may be readily serviceable either for shooting or for cutting purposes, it being noted that the weapon barrel is arranged in a different plane than the blade.
A still further object of the device is to provide a fire arm and a sword in a unitary structure, the sword portion being readily detachable when desired and the entire structure being simple and inexpensive to manufacture and serviceable when desired.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views z-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combined lire arm and sword formed after the present arrangement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of.a sword provided with the detachable blade of the device. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken upon line III-III of Fig. 1. Fig. A is a side elevation of the attaching end portion of the blade. Figs. 5 and 6 are transverse sectional views taken upon lines V--V and VI-VI respectively of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 7 is an enlarged side elevation of the free end of the barrel of the fire arm to which the blade is adapted to be attached.
The invention broadly consists of a bayonet or sword blade 10 adapted to be detachably secured to either a fire arm 11 or the hilt 12. The said fire arm 11 is substantially of the form of the usual revolver having a shooting barrel 13, revoluble cartridge chamber 14 and operating trigger 15 while the handle 16 of the revolver however is arranged extending longitudinally rearwardly In substantially the same axial plane as the chamber 1A. A finger guard 17 is arranged at one side of the handle 16 being connected to the trigger' guard 18 of the revolver. A specially designed rib 19 of more than usual width is provided longitudinally of the lower side of the barrel 13 extending from the free end of the barrel to a point adjacent the chamber 1A.'
The blade 10 has a fiat attaching base 2O provided with a central slot 21 in its free end adapted for the slidable reception of the ribv 19 therein and whereby the base 2O lies immediately beneath and in contact with the lower portion of the barrel 13 with the blade 10 extending forwardly of theloarrel in a plane directly therebeneath and in substantial alinement with the handle 16 of the fire arm. Triangular lugs 22 are provided on opposite sides of the rib 19 adj acont the forward end thereof and at its point of connection with the barrel 13, the said lugs having their forward edges 23 in planes parallel with the forward edge 24 of the rib 19 with the adjacent edge 25 of each of the lugs slanting rearwardly. Complementally formed notches 26 are arranged in the base 20 at opposite sides of the slot 2l and are adapted to fit over the lugs 22 which form abutment stops for the blade 10 when operatively arranged upon the revolver 11. A resilient latch 27 is carried by one side portion of the base 2O and has an engaging end 2S adapted for seating reception within a transverse keeper 1perforation 29 of the rib 19 when the base is operatively attached thereto. The latch 27 projects through an enlarged slot 30 in the portion of the base 20 at one side of the slot 21 and has a slightly upturned end 31 exteriorly of the said base for engagement by the hand in releasing the latch.
The operation of the invention will be apparent from this detailed description of the same, it being understood that the blade base 20 is readily applied to the rib 19 with the locking latch end 28 positioned within the keeper Q9 for holding the base with its slotted portion 21 in receiving arrangement upon the rib 19 with the notches 2G engaging the lugs 2Q, and the forward end 32 of the slot 21 engaging the forward end 24 of the said rib. By grasping the revolver handle 16, the blade 10 may be readily employed as a sword or thrust ing bayonet while the revolver may be freely used as a fire arm simultaneously with such employment.
In Fig. 2 a hilt 12 is shown having a cylindrical handle 33 and a hand guard 34E while the blade 10 is secured to a forwardly projecting plate 35 in axial alinement with the handle 33 and having a rib 19 corresponding to the rib 19 of the firearm 11 as well as being provided with opposite lugs 22 similar to the aforementioned lugs 22, the blade being secured thereto in a manner identical to that heretofore described with respect to the said firearm. In the employment of the blade 10 with either the revolver 11 or hilt 12, it will be seen that when the blade becomes damaged, the same may be readily removed and a new blade supplied.
That we claim is 1. A. weapon comprising a handle member7 a forwardly projecting support carried thereby, a rib longitudinally carried `by the said support and having a keeper perforation therethrough, rearwardly sloping oppositely positioned abutment lugs carried by the said rib in engagement with the said support and adjacent the forward free edge of the rib7 a blade having a base provided with an inwardly-extending slot inclosingly positioned over the said rib and being provided with opposite longitudinal notches adapted for the reception of the said lugs when the device is assembled, and a resilient latch upon the said base having an engag ing end in normal locking reception within the said perforation.
2. A firearm comprising a revolver having a barrel, a mounting rib longitudinally carried by the lower side of the said barrel provided with a keeper perforation7 a handle for the said revolver rearwardly-extending in substantially longitudinal alinement with the said rib, a finger guard at the lower side of the said handle, a blade having an attaching base provided with an inwardlyextending slot adapted for reception over the said rib with the free forward end of the rib in abutting engagement with the inner end of the said slot, a resilient latch carried by the said base in locking engagement with the said keeper when the blade is secured to the said rib, and oppositely positioned coperating notches upon the said base and triangular lugs upon the said rib, the said blade being in axial longitudinal alinenient with the said handle when operatively positioned upon the revolver.
In testimony whereof we a'l'liX our signatures.
JOSEPH GONSIOR. IVILLIABI FRANK. CHRISTIAN SCHNEIDER.
