CHECK AND DEPOSIT-TICKET TRAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1916.
Application filed October 9, 1915. Serial No. 54,620. a
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLAF BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Ottawa and State of Oklahoma, have invented anew and useful Check and Deposit-Ticket Tray, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is a tray for use in bank bookkeeping, especially in .connection with a Burroughs ledger posting machine, and it is the object of the invention to provide a tray adapted to hold the unposted and posted checks and deposit tickets or slips, whereby they may be readily posted and transferred from the unposted stacks to the posted stacks.
It is also the object of the invention to provide a tray of the nature indicated havingnovel means for holding or accommodating the unposted and posted checks and deposit tickets, so that the device will be convenient, time and trouble saving, and efficient in use.
It is also within the scope of the invention to provide a check and deposit ticket tray which is comparatively simple, compact and inexpensive in construction, the same being readily constructed chiefly of sheet metal,
although various materials may be employed.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from thespirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the improved tray. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3
is a cross section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a suitable rectangular base 1 constructed of sheet metal or other material, and having thereon, four compartments, two
for holding the unposted checks and deposit tickets, and the other for holding the posted checks and deposit tickets or slips.
' One half of the base 1 is occupied by the compartments for the deposit tickets, and the other half by the compartments for the checks. The compartment for holding the unposted deposit tickets or slips, embodies a rectangular plate 2 secured upon the base 1 adjacent one side edge thereof and near one corner. The plate 2 is disposed longltudlnally of the base, and is provided at its side edges with a pair of upturned or upstanding ears 3 between which the stack of unposted deposit tickets T are disposed upon the plate 2, whereby the ears 3 hold the tickets in place against lateral displacement. The plate 2 is arranged adjacent the forward end of the baseil, and the rear end of the plate 2 is provided with an inclined abutment flange 4: overhanging the plate, and againstwhich the head ends of the deposit tickets are adapted to abut, so that the other ends of the tickets will be shifted accordingly to project slightly one beyond the other so that the last mentioned ends of the tickets may be readily lifted by the fingers in removing the tickets as they are posted 2 has an upwardly curved lip 5 for bending one at a time. The forward end of the plate the tail ends of the deposit, tickets up-- wardly, so that theymay be more easily removed. This also tends to hold the deposit tickets against the flange 4. Secured upon the base at the other forward corner thereof adjacent the opposite side edge thereof, is a rectangular longitudinal receptacle orner side of the receptacle 6 and provided with a downturned flange secured upon the base parallel with the inner side.of the receptacle 6. The posted deposit tickets'T' which are placed within the receptacle 6 upon the bottom plate 7 tend to slide against the outer wall of the receptacle 6, away from the inner wall, whereby the posted deposit tickets are held in proper position within said receptacle. The flange 8 forms with the inner side of the receptacle 6 a narrow pocket for receiving someof the posted deposit tickets T which are out of 'alpha-.
betieal or numerical order. The base forms the bottom of said pocket, and the flange 81s of less height than the inner sideorwall of 10 to grasp the posted tickets T resting.
upon the bottom plate 7, so that they can be removed easily.
A rectangular transverse receptacle or compartment 11 for the posted checks is mounted upon the' base 1 adjacent the rear end thereof, the ends of the receptacle 11. being flush with the side edges of the base and being extended forwardly, as at 12, to provide end wings or members for the compartment or receptacle 13 for the unposted checks C. The inner side wall 14 of the receptacle 11 provides a partition between the receptacles or compartments 11 and 13 to divide them, it being noted that the receptacles 11 and 13 are disposed side by side upon the rear half of the base, the receptacle 13 being arranged adjacent the compartments for the deposit tickets. 4
The compartment 13 has an inclined bottom plate 15 having its upper edge disposed rearwardly and provided with relatively wide depending flanges 16 secured upon the base, while the lower forward edge of the plate 15 has a relatively narrow downturned flange 17 secured upon the base. 'A pair of standards 1819 are engaged through the plate 15 adjacent the lower edge thereof and secured to the base, the u per end of the standard 19 being curled or ent back, as at 20, to prevent the same from injuring the hand of thebookkeeper when the checks are removed from the compartment 13 and placed into the rece tacle or compartment 11. The bottom ate 15 is providedbetween its ends and adjacent its edges with recesses 21 extending into the flanges 16-17, forreceiving the thumb and fingers to allow the checks C to be readily removed from the compartment 13. It will be noted that the checks 0 resting upon the plate 15 Wlll slide against the standards 18-19, and
the lower edge of theplate 15 being raised sllghtly by the flange16 will enable the checks C to be readily removed one at a time from the stack to be placed into the receptacle 11 for the posted checks.
The receptacle 11 is provided with an inclined bottom plate 22, the upper edge of which is disposed rearwardly adjacentbut spaced from the rear side wall of the re-' ceptacle 11 and provided with a downturned flange 23 secured upon the base. The
In using the tray for posting the checks and deposit tickets, the unposted checks and deposit tickets are placed in stacks upon the plates 15 and 2, respectively. The deposit tickets will be heldin place between the upturned ears 3 and against the flange 4, so that they can be readily removed one at a time as they are posted. The stack of checks C resting upon the plate 15 will bear against the standards 1819, and will be held against endwise movement by the wings or extensions 12. Particular attention is directed to the fact that the unposted checks and deposit tickets are so arranged, that the names or signatures N will be disposed adjacent one another, which will make it more convenient for the bookkeeper in referring .to the signatures or names on the checks and deposit tickets. ,As the checks and de-.
the receptacles 11 and 6, respectively, which .can be done handily; Should the unposted checks be out of alphabetical or numerical order, those which are not in proper order can be set on edge within the pocket between the flange 16 and partition 14, so that they can be readily'placed in proper position at the proper time; The posted checks which are out of order can be placed within the pocket between the flange 23 and outer side wall of the receptacle 11, and the posted deposit tickets which are out of order can be set on edge within the pocket between the flange 8 and inner side wall of the receptacle 6. It is thus an easy matter to hold those checks and deposit tickets which are not in proper order, so that they can be placed where they belong at the proper time.
The present device enables the checks and deposit tickets to be handled conveniently when posting them, and saves time and trouble compared with the ordinary methods employed. The entire device, with the exception of the standards 18-49 can be constructed inexpensively from sheet metal, although other materials may be employed, and the device is also simple and light in construction.
posit tickets are posted they are, placed in Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: 1 v
a base having a receptacle thereon, and a spaced from the respective side wall of the receptacle to provide a narrow pocket for holding some of the slips when set on edge, the base forming the bottom of said pocket, said flange being of less height than said wall and being adapted to support the slips adjacent said wall. v 2. In a device of the character described, a base having a receptacle thereon and an inclined bottom plate for said receptacle having a downturned flange at its upper edge-secured upon the base and'spaced'from the respective wall of the receptacle, said bottom plate having a recess in its upper edge extending into said flange, and said wall of the receptacle having an upwardly opening recess complementing the aforesaid recess.
3. In a device of the character described, a base, an inclined bottom plate for supporting a stack of checks whose upper and lower edges are provided with downturned flanges being provided at its upper and lower edges with companion recesses extending into said flanges, the lower recess being between the standards.-
4. In a device of the character described, a base having a rectangular receptacle thereon whose ends are extended to provide the.
ends of a second receptacle, one of the side Walls of the first mentioned receptacle forming a partition between the two receptacles, and the other side wall of the first mentioned receptacle forming a back wall, said partition and back wall having upwardly opening recesses, inclined bottom plates for said receptacles having their upper edges provided with downturned flanges secured upon the base adjacent the back wall and partition, respectively, said bottom plates having recesses at their upper edges extending into said flanges, and standards at the lower edge of the bottom plate of the first mentioned receptacle.
