Be it known that I, OLE OLsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ferguson, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Freight-Car Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to grain or freight car doors, and more particularly to the class of duplex adjustable grain car doors.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a door construction of this character wherein the same is hung so that when freed it can be easily and Conveniently slid to open or closed position and when in the latter position will be firmly secured to the door frame so as to avoid the falling and resultant loss of grain or other like material from the car. i
Another' object of the invention is the provision of a door construction of this character wherein the same is formed in sections, one of which is slidably supported while the other section is swingingly mounted, thereby enabling grain or the like material to be discharged from the car through the lower portion of the door when the swinging section is open and also which permits of the loading of the car through the upper portion of the door when the sliding section is open.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a door construction of this character which is securely locked in closed position and the sections thereof held in a novel manner.
i A still further object of the invention is the provision of a door construction of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and elicient in its purpose, strong, durable and readily and easily fastened and unfastened with despatch and inexpensive in manufacture.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be delined in the claim hereunto appended.

designates generally a portion of the body of a grain or freight car which is of the ordinary well known construction, B, the doorway or frame in the side of the body of said car, and C the sliding door, which will be hereinafter fully described. Secured to the inner face of the side of the car body A, above the door frame B, are spaced brackets 10 in which is supported a rod-like track 11, over which travel the rollers 12 journaled within hangers 13 fixed to the door C for slidably supporting it to permit opening and closing movement thereo as usual.
The door C includes substantially H- shaped outer and inner frames 14 and 15,
respectively, preferably made from metal stock, the vertical side portions of the outer frame 14 being inwardly and outwardly bent to provide spacing flanges 16 which are riveted or otherwise secured to the side portions of the inner frame 15 to form a unitary structure and to separate the frames 14 and 15 from each other, with internal channels 17 in the longer side edges of the door, the shape of these frames 14 and 15 being designed to provide upper and lower openings a and b respectively, in said door.
Slidably fitted in the upper portions of the channels 17 is the upper panel section 18, and formed in the said channels 17 rearwardly of this section are rack bars 19, while journaled in suitable bearings 20 on the section 18 is a horizontally disposed rocking rod 21 formed at its ends with keeper wings 22, which latter are adapted to engage between any of the teeth formed on the bars 19 on the turning of the rod 21 in one direction to lock the section 18 in adjusted position, the rod 21 being formed with a hand lever 23, whereby it may be turned for releasing or locking the panel sections.
Mounted at the lower edge of the medial cross connecting portion 24 of the wing frame 15 are pintle sleeves 25, in which is engaged a pintle 26, the same being also passed through pintle sleeves 27 on hinge straps 28 fixed to the inner face of a lower swinging panel 4section 29 which is adapted to close the lower opening in said door.
The straps 28 form guide cleats 30 in which are slidably itted reversely movable latch bars 3l having out-turned ends 32 which engage in the lower portions of the channels 17 for holding the panel section 29 closed. The bars 31 Vhave pivotally connected thereto a lever 32', the latter being fulcrumed on a pivot 33 mounted in the door, by which the said bars 31 are thrown to locking orreleased position. Mounted on the inner faces of the vertical stiles of the door frame B are strips 34, the same being formed with elongated slots 35 in which are adapted to engage cam latches36 pivot'ally mounted in the vertical side portions of the frames 14 and l5 and formed With levers 37 for operating the same, these latches 36 being designed to firmly fasten the door in closed position relative to the door frame.

Having thus described my invention, 1
claim:
In a sliding door for grain cars, a door body comprising inner and outer substantially' H-shaped frames united to each other, toothed racks yixed vertically between the frames, a Vpanel slidable between said frames to span the space between either the'upper or the lower arm of the H and having means to engage the racks to hold said panel in either or in any selected intermediate position, and a swinging panel supported upon the frame'for closing the lower opening or so much thereofv as is not covered by the sliding panel.
