SIZING-TANK REGULATOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER A. Nivnme, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Sizing-Tank Regulator, of which the following is a specification.
This application embodies an apparatus shown in my copending application No. 823,189 for Letters Patent on a sizing process.
The present application discloses a novel means whereby any desired level may be maintained in a size box, and whereby said levels may be altered at the will of an operator.
As a preliminary statement it will be understood that sizing of the thread or yarn which is used in the manufacture of cotton cloth is necessary in order to strengthen the yarn or thread and to lay the fibers, whereby the material is adequately and properly prepared for the Weaving operation. Under the ordinary procedure, a quantity of sizing material sufiicient to bring about the desired depth and to secure a maximum sizing efficiency is run into the size box.. As the level of the size falls, new size is added occasionally and as a result the maximum depth of sizing material and conditions which promote a maximum efiiciency prevail for a short time only, and at times, the sized threads are wholly unsuited for the opera tion of weaving, due to the failure to restore a proper depth of sizing material soon enough, and due to the fact that the depth ofthe sizing material in the size box is constantly fluctuating and may fall too low.
The amount of sizing material taken up by the yarn or thread depends upon several factors,-to wit, the density of the sizing solution, the character of the material used as a sizing, the tension of the material which is being sized, the twist thereof, the diameter of the yarn, thread or other material, and the depth of the submergency as well as the time ,diiringwhich the yarn or other material is kept submerged, either from, the rate of the size may be kept constant and the size Specification of Letters Patent. kept at a constant consistency between the times of changing the levels.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby, simultaneously with the maintenance of a constant level, the heavier portions of the size at any predetermined distance from the bottom of the box are removed.-
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description pro ceeds, the invention resides in the combina tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed canbe made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

These details, however, may be changed without jeopardizing the utility of the invention, it being necessary merely that the material 2 be guided'through the size' box by some suitable means. If desired, a
storage tank 25 may be provided and across the tank 25 may be extended a screen 26. The storage tank 25 may be equipped with any approved means for heating the size,'
said means being indicated by the reference characters 25. Leading from the storage tank 25 is a supply pipe 27 having a branch 29 for each size box 1 the branches 29 being equipped with valves 30. A pipe 31 communicates with nipples 12 of casings 8 constituting parts of constant level devices to be described in detail hereinafter. The pipe 31 may discharge into the storage tank 25 above the screen 26. In the pipe 31 may be interposed a pump 28. The size may be renewed in any-suitable manner, as from a size preparation kettle 32 having suitable means indicated at 33 for discharging into the tank 25, the size preparation kettle being equipped with a heating means 32 of any desired sort.
The foregoing description sets forth one of the many sizing systems with which any of the constant level devices hereinafter described may be used.
In the present embodiment of the inven tion there is provided a plurality of constant level devices, one of which is shown in Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6.
The constant level device under discussion includes a tubular casing 8 comprising laterally separable parts 9 having mating ears 10 through which securing elements 11 pass.
Adjacent their lower ends, the constituentparts of the casing 8 are equipped with lateral nipples 12 hereinbefore mentioned, and affording a connection between the casing 8 and the pipe 31. In the interior of the parts 9 of the casing 8 and adjacent their longitudinal edges, upright ribs 1i are-formed, the same constituting a guide in which a vertically slidable imperforate gate 15 is mounted. Extended transversely of one of the parts 9 of the casing 8 into close contact with the vertically slidable gate 15 is a plat- .form 16. Located above the platform 16 is a nipple 17 receiving a pipe 18 which enters the size box 1 at or above the bottom thereof. Mounted detachably upon the upper end of the casing 8 by threading or otherwise is a cap 19 which may carry a pet cock'20. A hand wheel 21 or like device is mounted for rotation in the cap 19, as shown at 22. Threaded into the hand wheel 21 is a screw 23 through the lower end of which a con necting element 24: passes, the connecting element 24 being mounted in the upper end of the gate 15.
In pract'icaloperation, the heavier and excess portions of the size, lying lower than the surface, pass through the pipe 18 into the casing 8 and are prevented from flowing downwardly by the partition 16. The size rises and flows over the upper edge ofthe gate'15 and thence passes downwardly into the pipe 31 and from the pipe 31 intothe storage tank 25. From the storage tank 25 or from any other suitable source of supply, fresh size is delivered into the size box 1 and when the storage tank 25 is used, fresh size enters the boxes by way of the pipes 27 and 29. The size may be renewed from the size preparation kettle 32.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the heavier portions of the size are drawn away and simultaneously a constant level is maintained in the size box.
It is possible to vary thelevel of the size in the size box 1 by rotat'ing the hand wheel 21, which, engaging the screw 23, serves to raise and lower the gate 15. Thus, the depth of submergence of the material 2 may be regulated. Through the instrumentality of the mechanism above described, the size is maintained at a constant level and the heavier portions of the size are drawn away, the size thus being kept in a homogeneous condition.
Referring to that form of the invention which is depicted in Figs. 7, 8, 9, lO'and 11, there is shown a casing 50 of tubular form and comprising separable parts 51, recessed as shown at 52 to form webs 53 united by securing elements 54. The parts 51 of the casing 50 are provided with nipples 55 receiving a pipe 56 corresponding to the pipe 31. In the interior of the parts 51 of the casing 50 and along their meeting edges, ribs 57 are formed, the same defining guides in which is mounted to reciprocate a gate 58. Extended transversely of one of the parts 51 of the casing 50 is a platform 59, the gate58 being adapted to slide in close and intimate contact with the inner edge of the platform 59. Projecting from one of the parts 51 of the casing 50 is a pipe 60 which forms a communication with the size box. The upper end of the casing 50 may be closed if desired as shown at 61, a pet-cock 100 being provided. This pet-cock, like the cook 20,
acts as a vent and prevents the pump 28 from withdrawing too much size and altering the constant level or volume. In the lower edge of the gate 58 there is formed a notch 62.
The means for controlling the movement of the gate 58 includes a plunger 63, offset" The inventioncomprises a tubular standard 68 threaded at 69 into a socket 70secured to the floor 71 or to any other accessible support. In opposed portions of the tubular standard 68 elongated slots 72 are formed. The lower end of the plunger 63 passes inside of the standard 68 and is equipped with an opening 73 through which passes a rod 74 lying in the slots 72 and carrying Wing nuts 75 adapted to bear against the outer face of the standard 68. One wing nut is threaded onto the rod 74 and the other wing nut is fixed to or integral with the rod. Tubular guides 7 6 are mounted on the rod 74 and engage the inner surface of the standard 68.
Owing to the fact that the standard 68 is threaded at 69 into the socket 70, the standard may be raised and lowered by rotating the same, thereby permitting an adjustment 1 of the packing gland 67.
The gate 58 may be raised and lowered by form 59, a complete drainage of the size box may be efi'ected.
Passing to that form of the invention shown in Figs. 12, 13, 14 and 15 there is disclosed a casing 200 open at the top but normally closed by means of a lid 201, held in place upon the casing 200 by means of hinges 202 or in any other desired manner. If desired, the casing may be equipped with a pet-cock 222, the functions of which have been alluded to hereinbefore. The casing 200 is provided with a connection 204 adapted to enter into the size box. In opposed relation to the connection 204 is a pipe 205 in which is interposed a valve (not shown).
88 The pipe 205 normally is closed and need not be considered further, saving for the statement that at times, the pipe 205 may be employed to drain one side of the casing. The outlet pipe from the casing 200 is shown at 206 and is adapted to communicate with the pipe 31.
Extended transversely of the casing 200 between the inlet 204 and the outlet 206 is an upright partition 207 provided in its upper edge with a notch 208 and having an opening 209 in its bottom. Upon one side of the partition 207, guide ribs 210 are formed, the same receiving a vertically slidable supplemental gate 211 controlled .by an upright rod 212 or the like, the rod having a lateral operating handle 214. Upon. the opposite face of the'partition, ribs 215 are formed, the same receiving slidably, a main gate 216 having an outstanding lug 217 into which a screw 218 is threaded as shown at 219, the lower end 220 of the screw bearing on the bottom of the casing, and the upper end of the screw being squared as shown at 221, to receive a wrench or key.
Under normal working conditions, the supplemental gate is moved downwardly to close the opening209 in the bottom of the partition 207 and through the medium of the screw 218, the main gate 216 is raised and lowered so that its upper edge occupies a predetermined position above the lower end of the notch.208 in. the partition 207, as shown in Fig. 13. The size enters thev casing 200 by way of the connection 204, rises in the compartment at the right hand side of the partition 207, flows through the notch 208 over the upper edge of the main gate 216 and passes out of the compartment at the left hand side of the casin g 200, through the outlet 206. From the foregoing it willbe obvious that the main gate 216 when in a fixed position, defines a constant level in the Having thus described the invention,
