To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. STORY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pawling, in the county of'Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coolers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to coolers for milk, cream, and other liquids, and the main object thereof is to provide such a device which is simple, practical, highly efficient, thoroughly sanitary, easily cleansed, and very inexpensive.
A further object is to provide such a device which dispenses with the use of pipes, coils, blowers, fans, sieves, and pumps, as are now employed in different types of coolers; and a further object is to provide a device of this class wherein the liquid is subjected to the influence of the cooling medium over a relatively great travel through the device.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the same parts are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1' is a perspective view of a cooler constructed in accordance with my present invention; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming a part of this application I have shown a cooler constructed in accordance with a preferred form of embodiment of my invention, and comprising a casing 3 formed of a bottom 4, sides 5, front 6, rear 7, and top consisting of a plurality of platforms 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, connected by vertical sections or risers 13, the upper platform 8 being connected with the back 7 and the lowermost platform 12 with the front (3 of the casing, all of said members being soldered or otherwise secured together. The uppermost platform 8 is arranged in a plane substantially below the tops of the back and side members of the casing, in order to prevent the escape of liquids over said members, and said platform is also provided with an opening 14 protected by a combing 15 of the approximate height of the said back and side members, whereby cold water, ice and water, or ice alone, may be placed within the casing 3, and I also provide an outlet spout 16 leading the liquid into a suitable receptacle. In practice, I incline the said platforms from side to side of the casing, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1, each alternate platform being reversely inclined, and I provide a wall 17, between contiguous platforms, the alternate walls 17 being secured to opposite side members 5, and being, each, somewhat shorter than the casing, whereby ports 8 9 10*, 11 and 12 result, each at the lowest point of the respective platforms in order to direct the liquid downwardly in a gradual manner, and by a tortuous path, over the cold roof of the casing 3, to expose the liquid to the cooling influence of the cold contents of the casing for as great a length of travel as possible. within the dimensions of the casing.
It will be observed that the front, rear, and side members of the casing are all higher than the floors of the several platforms to prevent the escape of the liquid, and I prefer to make the downward inclination of said platforms very slight in order to overcome the tendency of the liquid to rush through the device, this being calculated according to the size of the casing 3.
The milk or cream is directed into the device upon the upper platform 8, as by a pipe 18 leading from the separator, 19, in the case of cream, or from any other suitable source, and it will be seen that the temperature thereof is materially reduced in its passage through my cooler and, in order to insure the greatest efliciency, I Will employ a paddle adapted to be inserted into the casing 3 to stir up the ice and water therein, as the water nearest the platforms will have a tendency to rise in temperature due to the Warm liquid passing thereover, said paddle not being shown.
My invention may be made of any desired size, and shape, and of any desired material, and other changes may be made over the form shown as come within the scope of the following claim.
