To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, SALLES G. JACOBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bala, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chutes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to loading and unloading and has for an object to provide a chute for facilitating the unloading or loading of ores or other materials and substances, such as coal and the like.
Among other features the invention comprehends a chute, particularly adapted to coal delivery wagons, and by the use of which the wagon need not be backed up to curb but can remain in a position longitudinal of the curb and street, so that the usual traffic will not be blocked or hampered. Usually it is necessary to back the coal wagon up to the curb so that the usual straight chute can be applied for conveying the coal from the wagon to the coal bin. This results in the wagon being disposed to extend transversely of the street and thus greatly hindering the operation of traiiic. With my invention the wagon can remain in a position longitudinal of the street and the coal is easily removed and conveyed to the coal bin.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which,

Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose the rear end of a coal delivery wagon, 10, having the usual opening 11 in the tail board 12 normally closed by a closure 13, sliding in guides 14, and controlled by a suitable lever 15.
The chute in its entirety is indicated -by the numeral 16, and comprises a main or Specification of Letters Patent.

folding portion 17 and a supplementary or straight portion 18. The folding portion consists of a series of segments 19 having a common pivot point 20, with the innermost segment rigidly secured to the tail-board 12. All of the segments, except the innermost one, are formed with grooves 21, and all of the segments, except the outermost one have pins 22, the pin of one segment operating in the groove of the next segment. In this manner the segments are limited in their relative movement about the pivot point 20. All of the segments have their rounded edges flanged, while the innermost and outermost segments have their opposite edges straight and provided with ianges fr. and b respectively. The segmental flanges, indicated by the character c of the several segments lap one another throughout the series of segments and thus contact with each other when the segments are telescoped or when the segments are spread. When the segments are telescoped the straight flange b of the outermost segment will aline with the straight flange a. of the innermost segment and when the segments are swung outwardly upon their pivot, one of the edges of the fiange b will contact with the side of the flange a thus assisting in limiting` the swinging movements of the sections, all of the flanges at the same time providing a perfect way for guiding the coal from the wagon body through the chute. Suitable chains 23 are secured at their inner ends to a hook 41 and have their outer ends connected to one or more of the segments to support the chute. By reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the segments can be relatively folded when not in use, thus avoiding any great projection from the rear of the wagon. The straight portion 18 has, at its inner end, a plurality of brackets 25, adapted to reA ceive in slots 26 thereof, pins 27 on the outermost segment 28. Thus the main and supplementary portions are locked together and as, shown in Fig. 4l, the inner end of the straight or supplementary portion is formed with an extension 29, projecting beneath the outermost segment 28 to insure a proper joint at the points of connection of the two parts forming the chute.
From the foregoing description, it will thus be clear that a coal or other kind or character of wagon for loading or unloading material, need not be backed up to a curb, if equipped with the chute described and set forth herein, and as shown in Fig. l, the Wagon 10 can be disposed tolie in a plane parallel to the usual curb.
It will be understood that I do not 1in-rit myself to the particular form of device shown; and that various slight changes can-n be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of wlhich is defined in the appended claim.
