To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL L YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Bill-File, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bill files, one of the objects thereof being to provide means whereby when a bill or other paperhasbeen placed in position upon the structure, properly spaced perforations can be formed therein and the bill will become engaged by the receiving ends of the arms of the fileso that immediately subsequent to the formation of the apertures, the bill can be pulled downwardly upon the holding arms of the file without any special positioning of the same upon the file.

A further object is to provide a structure of this character which is simple, durable and efiicient and by means of which a con siderable saving of time in filing away bills and the like, may be effected.

' With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in vation of a bill file embodying the present improvements, the back board thereof being broken away. Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the back board of the bill file, the same being provided near one end with a plate 2 having spaced longitudinal slots 3. Grooves 4 are formed in the board 1 and back of the slots 3 so as to regis ter therewith and the upper ends of the slots 3 are provided with circular enlargements 5 corresponding with openings 6 eX- tending through the board 1.

Arranged upon the board 1 and below or beyond the end of plate 2 is a bail-like wire 7 the side members of which are seate in longitudinal grooves 8 in the base, there bemg channeled wear strips 9 within these grooves and in which the side portions of the wire 7 are seated. Said side portions merge into arms 10 which extend upwardly or backwardly so as to be disposed directly in front of the grooves .4, the free ends of these arms 10 being outturned as at 11 to constitute points which are constantly located in front of or opposite the openings 6, although normally spaced from the plate 2. The intermediate portion of the bail-shaped wire 7 is detachably engaged in 'a transverse channel 12 formed by a flange along the lower edge of the plate 2, there being an eye 13 upon this intermediate portion of the wire and which eye projects beyond the channel so as to constitute means for press ing snugly against the plate 2 and thus holding the side portionsv of the wire 7 pressed into the channeled strips 9. This eye 13 also constitutes a means for engaging a nail or other like support to hold'the wire 7 when removed from theboard 1.

Hingedly connected to the upper portion of plate 2 is a plate 14 having a tongue 15 extending upwardly from the pivotal connection. This plate 14 is also provided with openings 16 into which the outturned ends 11 normally project. These openings 16 are adapted to register with the enlargements 5 when the plate 14 is pressed against the plate 2.

An operating plate 17 is hingedly connected to the plate 2 and has an upwardly extending tongue 18 which overlaps the tongue 15. This plate 17 has punches 19 extending therefrom, said punches being preferably tubular as shown and being normally spaced from the'plate 14 although adapted to eX- tend into the openings 16 when the two plates are. pressed together as hereinafter described. A knob 20 may be mounted on the plate 17 to facilitate actuation thereof. A spring 21 is supported on the'boardl. an d bearsat one end upon the tongue 18 and at its other end is secured to the board 1. Thus the spring servesto hold the tongue 18 normally pressed against the board 1 and also against the tongue 15, thus to hold the two plates or leaves 14 and 17 normally spaced from the plate 2 and from each other, as shown in Fig. 2. a

inserted between the arms 10 and the leaf 14 until its upper edge comes against a hinge connection 22 between the board 1 and the plate 14. In order to get the sheet of paper to this position it is sometimes necessary to press the arms 10 slightly toward the plate 2, thus to withdraw the outturned ends 11 from the openings 16 and provide a clearance through which the paper can be inserted. After the paper has been thus positioned, the arms 10 are released and the ends 11 will press against that portion of the paper extending across the openings 16. The plate 17 is then pushed quickly toward the board 1 whereupon the punches 19 will pass through the openings 16, through that portion of the paper extending across the openings, through the enlarged ends 5 of the slots 3, and into the openings 6, portions of the arms 10, at this time, entering the grooves 4. Thus it will be seen that the sheet of paper will be perforated and that the outturned ends 11 will project into perforations. As soon as the plate 17 is released, the spring 21 will return the parts to their normal positions, the arms 10 swinging forwardly so that the points 11 will pro ject through the openings in the paper and into the openings 16. By now pulling downwardly on the perforated sheet of paper, the same will slide along the arms 10 and be brought to position at the lower ends of the arms. In this manner a desired number of sheets can be placed on the file .and after the file has been filled, the wire 7 can be disengaged from the channels 12 as before described.

lVhat is claimed is 1. A billfile including an apertured back board, lapping leaves hingedly connected to the board, a punching element carried by one of the leaves, there being an aperture in the other leaf for the reception of said element, and a resilient arm connected to the back board and having an outturned end normally seated between the .apertured leaf and the back board.

2. A bill file including a back board having an opening, a leaf hingedly connected thereto and provided with an opening, an'

actuating plate hingedly connected to the back board, a punch extending therefrom and normally spaced from the leaf, said punch being movable into the apertures in the leaf and back board, and a resilient arm connected to the back board and interposed between the apertures in said board and leaf.

3. A bill file including a back board having an aperture, an apertured leaf hingedly connected thereto, an actuating plate hingedly connected to the back board, said leaf and actuating plate each including a tongue, yielding means cooperating with the tongues for holding the leaf and plate spaced .apart, a. resilient arm extending between theback board and apertured leaf, said arm having an outturned end normally positioned between the apertures in the back board and leaf.

A bill file including a back board hav ing an aperture, a leaf and an actuating plate hingedly connected thereto, there being an aperture in the leaf, a punch carried by the plate and movable into the apertures in the leaf and back board, a resilient arm detachably connected to the back board and extending between said board and the leaf, said arm having an outturned end normally positioned between the apertures in the back board and leaf.

5. A bill file including a back board having spaced apertures and grooves leading to the apertures, a leaf hingedly connected to said board and having spaced openings, an actuating plate hingedly connected to the back board and having spaced punchers movable into the openings in the leaf and back board, tongues extending from the leaf and actuating plate respectively, said tongues lapping, yielding means cooperating with the tongues for holding the leaf and actuating plate normally spaced relative to each other and from the back board, a baillike wire detachably connected to the back board and having resilient arms extending between the back board and leaf, said arms having outturned terminals normally positioned between the apertures in the leaf and back board.
