To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NOAH F. I-IEINSELMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pike, in the county of Ritchie and State of lVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in metallic railway ties and resides in the provision of a simple and inexpensive tie that is constructed so that it will remain firmly embedded in the road bed and not be subject to endwise or lateral movement relative to said road bed.
Another of the objects of the invention is to provide a tie formed with no'velly constructed rail receiving slots or recesses arranged for cooperation with rail clamping members so that creeping or spreading of the rails is prevented.
Another object is to generally improve and simplify the construction of rail ties of the metallic type so as to render them more practical, capable of being more resilient and inexpensive to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim.
With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a plan view of the tie showing the rail secured in one end thereof, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation, Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. l is a detail perspective view of one of the clamping members, Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the tie, Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 2, Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the locking element.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 1 designates as an entirety the body portion of my improved tie that is formed of any suitable metal preferably steel and is rectangular as to shape and provided at each end with a wedge-shaped doveof the body 1. These ribs 5 terminate flush at their under faces with the under face of the r1b 3 and are arranged at the ends and at points on opposite sides of the center of the 1 tie. The ribs 3 and 5 extend into the road bed for the tie in such manner that the tie is prevented endwise or lateral movement relative to the road bed and remains firmly anchored or embedded. The ends of the ribs 3 are beveled as at 1 so as to provide more anchoring area for the end ribs 5. The upper face of the body 1 is cut away transversely or recessed as at 6 so that the body being thin at this point provides more resiliency. 1
I provide for each end of the tie rail clamping members 7 and 8. The clamping member 8 is tapered and wedge shape so as to cooperate with the recess 2 and its outer or inclined face is formed with a rectangular recess 9 forming shoulders 10 at the ends thereof, which shoulders engage the side faces of the tie on opposite sides of the opening. The side of the opening 2 adjacent to the end of the tie extends within the recess and the shoulders 10 engage the side faces of the tie thus holding the member 7 against movement relative to the tie. The under face of the clamping member 7 is recessed or cut away as at 11 so as to engage and conform to the shape of the face of the rail.
The clamping member 8 is shaped similarly to the one 7 and is used as a wedge to tightenthe clamping member 7 and hold the rail firmly within the tie.
In assembling the tie, the rail is placed within the opening 2 at each end thereof and the clamping member 7 inserted in place so as to snugly engage the rail on the base, web and under face of the ball thereof and the opposed side of the opening 2 locking itself as described. The member 8 is then wedged into place and engages the opening and rail similarly to the member 7 but is spaced at one end from one end of the opening. I provide means for locking the member 8 in position consisting of a locking member 12. The member 12 consists of a screw threaded shank 13 that is inserted through an opening formed through the tie and designated 14 at the larger end of said opening 2 at each end of the tie. Formed on the upper end of the screw threaded shank is an enlarged head 15 formed with an offset extension 16. The head 15 is designed to engage the rear end of the member 8 so as to prevent the member being accidentally displaced relative to the tie. Fhe member 16 provides means for turning and removing the member 12. A nut 17 is turned on the lower screw threaded end of the shank 13. The projection 16 isdesigned to engage the rail under the ball thereof.
With reference to the foregoing description and accompanying drawings, it will be observed that I have provided a simple, inexpensive, and extremely reliable rail tie and fastening means for securing the rails thereon.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily var I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as set forth.
W hat is claimed is A rail tie consisting of a body portion having rail-receiving recesses in the ends thereof, said recesses being dovetailed. in cross section and each having one wall thereof tapering from one end of the recess to the other end, the said body portion of the tie having vertical openings therein having their upper ends opening through the bottom walls of the recesses and at points adjacent the beveled walls of the recesses, companion pairs of rail fastening blocks removably arranged within the recesses and one block of each pair being wedge shaped and of a length less than the length of the recess, and having one side thereof engaging the tapering wall of the recess, the other block of each pair engaging the other side of the recess, means carried by the last-mentioned block for engaging the body portion of the tie for holding the said block against movement when in operative position, locking elements having shanks extending through the vertical openings in the tie body and having heads thereon for engaging the adjacent ends of the wedge shaped blocks, the said heads having rail-engaging off-set portions formed thereon.
