MACHINE FOR FINISHING CANDLES.
Application filed July 16, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I EVALD J. ENGMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Machine for Finishing Candles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to candle finishing machines of the type disclosed in my Pat-v ent No. 1,114,871, Oct. 27, 1914, and has for its object means by which the surplus candle material is removed during the finishing of the candle; and it consists in the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation partly 1n section of the base or die supporting casing, the lower end of the movable carriage for drawing the candles through the dies being also shown as in its starting position. I Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of one of the dies.
1 designates the hollow casing having an inlet 2 and an outlet 3 for a heating medium, as steam, and also having tubular holders 4 extending therethrough and opening through upper and lower faces thereof.
5 is a reciprocally movable carriage movable toward and from the casing 1 along guides 6 and carrying plungers 7 which move through the dies in the holders 4, and which have hooks 8 at their lower ends from which the candles 9 are suspended as by their wicks. The carriage may be operated in any suitable manner, as described in my patent referred to.
10 designates the dies, one of which is arranged in each holder 4, each die having an outlet for the superfluous candle material between the ends of the passage of the die, this passage being preferably located near the exit or upper end of the die so that a small finishing surface remains over which the candle is drawn after the superfluous grease or candle material has been removed so that the candle is completely finished and there is no bur-like residue: or drip left thereon. In my patent referred to, the superfluous grease is removed at the extreme exit end of the die. Preferably, the passage of the die 10 tapers from its entrance toward its exit end.

Owing to the location of the ducts 11, the surplus material is carried directly onto the top of the steam heated casing 1, the Walls of which are inclined near the 'outer ends of the ducts so that the grease is melted and runs or flows away from the ducts. Hence obstructing of the ducts is avoided.
In operation, as the candle is drawn through the heated die, the greater amount of the superfluous grease runs out of the lower end of the tapered die passage, but the small amount wiped off during the end of the finishing operation runs through the ducts in the head, and the small finishing surface 14 at the upper end of the die above the ducts completes the finishing of the candle after all the superfluous grease has been removed.
What I claim is 1. A candle finishing machine comprising a tubular finishing die through which the candle is passed, the die having a lateral outlet duct near the exit end thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A candle finishing machine comprising a tubular die, through which the candle is passed, means for moving the candle through the die, the die having a circumferential series of outwardly extending outlets near its exit end leading from its interior through the periphery thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A machine for finishing candles comprising a tubular finishing die through which the candles are passed, the die having a lateral outlet duct near the exit end thereof, and a finishing surface between said duct and the exit end of the passage of the die, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. A machine for finishing candles comprising a tubular die through which the can-. dles are passed, the die having an outlet for superfluous material between the ends of its tubular passage, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. A candle finishing machine comprising afinishing die through which the candle is passed, a holder for the die, the holder being formed with a passage in which the die fits, the die having a head overlying the contiguous portion of the holder and being formed with radially extending outlets leading from the passage of the die through the periphery of the diebelow the head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. A candle finishing machine comprising a finishing die through which the candle is passed, a holder for the die, the holder being formed with a-passage in which the die fits, the die having a head overlying the contiguone portion of the holder and being formed with radially extending outlet ducts leading from the passage of the die through the pe ripherythereof below the head, said ducts Copies or thin patent may be obtained for being formed partly in the head, substan tially as and for the purpose described.
