FIRE-KINDLER.
Specification of Letterslatent.
Patented July 4, 1916.
Application filed March 25, 1916. Serial No. 86,682.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, MARTIN URBAN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Kindlers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fire kindlers.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a ready means for initially starting ignition in stoves and furnaces by means of vaporized fuel automatically ignited without endangering persons or property.
A further object of the device is to provide an electrically lighted gaseous fuel burner adapted for positioning within a stove or furnace for initially starting c0m bustion therein and readily removed when such object is accomplished, the device being serviceable in connection with either a gas or liquid fuel, supply.
The present invention contemplates a torch -member having a burner provided with both a gas and a liquid fuel supply, the burner havingvdistributing' plates and positionable within a stove for kindling purposes, the fuel being adapted for lighting by an electric spark when the device is operatively positioned, it' being designed to thereafter cut off the supply and remove the device from the stove.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device with the gas supply pipe broken away. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the bodyportion of the device. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view .taken upon line IV-IV of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line VV of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken upon line VI-VI of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken upon line VII-VII of Fig. 6, and, Fig. v8 is a longitudinal sectional view of the electric Wire conduit illustrating the switch mechanism carried thereby.
It beingunderstood that the present arrangement is inthe form of a fire kindler consisting broadly of a torch, the same is herein illustrated having a pear-shaped body 10 serviceable as a handle through Which a supply pipe 11 is arranged axially thereof and connected by a coupling 12 to a gasolene tank 13 having an air compressing pump 14. The forward end of the pipe 11 is rigidly connected to a burner 15 in the form of a three-tined fork, the tines or arms 16 of which are provided with forwardly inclined outlets or perforations 17 at opposite sides of distributing plates 18 carried in parallelism upon'the lower sides of the said arms.
Controlling valves 19 and 20 are provided for regulating the supply of gasolene to the burner 15 from the tank 13 while forwardly of said valves there is arranged a gas inlet 21 controlled. by a valve 22 and supplied with a combustible gas by means of a flexible hose 23. A laterally projecting foot 2 1 is carried by the body 10 upon which foot and the free edges 25 of the plates 18 the device is adapted'to rest.
A chamber 26 is arranged in the body 10 provided with a normally closed door 27 while a battery 28 is positioned within the chamber 26 which latter may also accommo date a spark coil not shown, if found desirable. A tubular conduit 29 extends through the side wall of the body 10 connnunicating with the chamber 26 and has its free end provided with a tubular nipple 30. Two circuit wires 31 are attached to the opposite poles of the battery 28 and extend inwardly of the'conduit 29 and are secured to oppositely arranged contact screws 32 positioned therein. A switch collar 33 formed of dielectric material is slidably arranged within Opposite contact for providing a jump spark to ignite the combustion fluid which passes through the burner perforations 17.
The complete operation of the device will be apparent from this detailed description thereof, it being understood that when gas is to be employed for furnishing the flame from the hose 23 and inlet 21, the valve 22 will be opened for allowing the gas to pass through the burner arm 16 and out of the perforations 17 adjacent the opposite faces of the plates 18. At such times, the gasolene valve 20 will be closed and the burner 15 will be arranged within the stove or furnace adjacent and preferably in contact with the combustible material which it is desired to fire. At such times, the switch member shown in Fig. 8 being in its open position, the same will then be closed by means of the lug 3 f for shifting the collar 33 to the position therein illustrated, thus connecting the electrical circuit from the battery 28 with the terminal points 39 for inducing an electric spark between such terminals and igniting the gas thereby. As soon as the burner 15 is lighted, the electric switch may be turned 05 and when the kindling material is sufliciently ignited, the gas valve 22 is closed and the entire device with the burner 15 removed from the stove. \Vhen desired to employ the gasolene from the tank 13 as a burning fluid, the pressure upon the gasolene is supplied by means of the pump 1 k in the usual manner and the gas valve 22 being closed, the gasolene valves 19 and 20 will be opened, whereupon the gasolene will pass through the burner perforations 17 upon the distributing plates 18 and will be ignited with more or less of a flash by means of the terminals 39 upon closing the electrical switch collar 33. lVhen not in use, the entire device may be positioned upright upon a base 10 carried by the bottom of the gasolene tank 13.
It will thus be seen that a serviceable fire igniter is arranged which may be employed for initially starting a blaze in .a stove or furnace by means of gasolene or gas without the employment of matches and in a manner to prevent injury to the operator of the device.
\Vhile the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MARTIN URBAN.
