To all whom it may concern. I
Be it known that I, LUCIEN PoULiN, residing at Clarkdale,State of Arizona,United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ashing- Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to washing machines.
In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation, and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a central vertical section through the machine; Fig. 2 is a top plan view with the gearing and frame above the top of the outside tub removed; Fig. 3 is a detail of the means for raising the inside tub and basket; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional View of the inner tub.
The main objects of the invention are to provide a durable and efficient machine of simple construction and operation which can be used to dry the goods being treated after the washing has been completed. These and other objects are accomplished by the invention to be described.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the outer fixed tub l is mounted on suitable legs 2, as usual, and provided with a drain spout 3 closed by a plug or other suitable means. A smaller inner tub 1 is mounted in tub 1, concentric therewith. This inner tub is fixedly secured to a short sleeve 5 secured to a vertical shaft 6 and provided at its lower end with a conical bearing 7 which rests in a conical recess in a boss 7 at the center of tub I. The bearing 7 is exten ed upward against the under face of the bottom of a basket 8 with upwardly and outwardly slanting sides of wire, which is secured to the bearing by means of a binding nut 9 threaded on the upper end of sleei'e so as to tightly grip the edge of the bottom of a basket around the sleeve between the nut and the upper face of the extended portion of bearing 7 The shaft 6 is grooved for the greater part of its length to receive atongue formed on the inner face of a bevel gear 10 revolubly mounted on a plate secured to a yoke 11 secured across the fixed tub 1. Gear 10 is in mesh with a bevel gear 12 keyed on the inner end of a shaft 13 rotatably mounted through one end of a frame 11 mounted on yoke 11 and through a sleeve plate or block 15 secured to the brace 16 of frame 14.
The shaft 6 is extended up through a sleeve 17 provided with an integral rack 18 and loosely mounted in a bracket 19 secured to frame 14, being provided with an integral collar 20 at its upper end which prevents its falling through the opening in the bracket. Bracket 19 is provided, at the center of its front, with a fixedly secured U bracket 21 extending down in front of-rack 18 which carries a pinion 22 in mesh with the rack the shaft of which is extended and provided with a hand wheel 23. The bracket 21 is further provided with two upwardly extending lugs between which is mounted a gravity pawl 24 for a purpose to be later disclosed.
The upper end of shaft 6 projects slightly beyond the top of sleeve 17, beneath a cap 25 threaded thereon, and is provided with a transverse pin 26 of greater length than the interior diameter of the sleeve, and its lower portion extends through the bottom of fixed tub 1 into a nipple 27 secured therein and a sleeve 28 threaded on the nipple and closed at its lower end by a cap 29, the nipple and sleeve forming a casing for the lower part of the shaft.
Shaft 13 is provided with a large pulley 30 and a small pulley 31, keyed thereon, and has its outer end squared to receive a crank 32, for operating purposes.
In using the machine the goods to be washed are placed in the inner tub 4 and basket 8, through the openings in the spider 33 secured to the shaft 6 and the edge of tub 4, and the tub is filled with the washing solution to within a short distance, as i; of an inch, of its edge. The inner tub 4 is then revolved, by turning crank 32, if the machine is to be driven by hand, or rotating pulley 30 if it is driven by a motor. As the tub I revolves the washing solution will be thrown outward by centrifugal force through radially disposed inwardly directed and curved passages or ducts 34 on the bottom of the tub beneath bracket 8, and the perforations between these ducts (Fig. at). This forces the solution between the fixed tub I and tub 4 up so new solution flows into the latter over the upper edge thereof. By
this means a continuous flow of the washing solution is maintained through the goods which quickly and easily loosens and removes all dirt without causing injury to the most delicate fabric.
After the goods have been thoroughly cleaned the plug is removed from drain spout 3 and the washing solution drained off. The clothes may then be rinsed in the same manner and the rinsing water drawn off, after which the basket 8 and tub 4 are raised, by turning the hand wheel 9.3 of gear 22 so as to raise sleeve 18 which engages pin 26, and secured in raised position by pawl 24wvhich is brought into engagement with rack 18. By revolving the raised basket and tub at a. relatively high speed the water will be forced out of the clothes through the sides of the basket into the tub 4 and from tub 4 into the fixed tub 1, by centrifugal force, as in the usual centrifugal drier. By this means the goods are quickly and easily dried without the usual inconvenience and additional work necessitated where the goods are wrung out by hand or are passed through a wringer separate from the washing machine.
If the machine is driven by a motor' the crank 32 is, of course, removed, and, for the drying operation the driving belt is moved from pulley 30 on to pulley 31 in order to obtain the necessary increase in the speed of revolution of the tub 4 and basket 8.
Several vertical angle irons are secured radially about the inner face of fixed tub 1 so as to form ribs extending to within a short distance of the inner tub 4:. These ribs prevent splashing of the washing solution and also prevent the solution outside of tub 4 from traveling with the same, thus insuring that it will offer sufiicient resistance to the revolution of the tub to be forced upward between the fixed and revoluble tubs, and over the upper edge of the latter, as described.
It is thought that the construction, operation, and use of the invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a machine of the character described; a fixed tub provided with a boss at its center recess to receive a bearing; a shaft provided with a vertical groove and extending above the fixed tub and through the boton said fixed tub; a frame mounted on said I yoke; a plate secured to said yoke; a gear revoluble thereon and provided with a tongue adapted to engage the groove of said shaft; a shaft rotatably mounted in said frame; means for rotating the same; a gear keyed thereon in mesh' with the first mentioned gear; a bracket secured to said frame; a sleeve loosely mounted therethrough and fitting loosely about the upper part of the first mentioned shaft, said sleeve being provided with a rack; a pin of greater length than the interior diameter of the said sleeve inserted through the top of said first mentioned shaft; a pinion in engagement with the said rack; means for rotating the same; and a pawl adapted to be moved into engagement with the said rack when raised.
2. In a machine of the character described; an outer fixed tub, a vertical driving shaft revolubly and slidably mounted therein and provided with a longitudinal key-way, an inner tub fixed to said shaft, a yoke secured to said fixed tub, a gear rotatably supported by said yoke and slidably keyed to the aforesaid shaft, means for driving said gear, a sleeve surrounding the upper part of said shaft, connections between said sleeve and said shaft, a rack carried by said sleeve, and a pinion meshing with and adapted to actuate said sleeve.
