Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1916.
Application led December 3, 1915. Serial No. 64,801.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. BOOTH, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seal-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
spring locking means may be readily attached to the shank or removable therefrom for purposes of repair, and when in locking position firmly engages the socket member at a plurality of points.
In the accompanying drawings forming art of this specification wherein like numbers of reference denote like parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a View showing the device embodying the present invention applied in locking and sealing position, the parts on which the device 1s applied being shown in fragmentary cross section. Figs. 2 and 3 are views on an enlarged scale showing the spring-bearing portion of the shank being inserted into the hollow frangible cap, the cap being shown in section; Fig. 4 is a view on an enlarged scale showing the frangible cap in cross section moved to sealing position with the spring of said springbearing shank entirely within the hollow portion of said cap; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5, Fig. 4.
A shank 1 of A any suitable length and transverse dimension may bear an enlarged base 2 at one end thereof and a reduced portion 3 at the opposite end, said shank, base, and reduced portion being preferably formed in one piece and mayl be made of metal or the like in the cylindrical shape, shown in the drawings, and .is constructed of material not readily frangible: A member 4 having two or more laterally extending spring prongs 5 is borne by `an end of 'reduced portion 3 and may be secured thereto in any suitable manner such, for instance,
as by means of rivet 6 or the like, said prongs being adapted to be pressed toward said reduced portion as same is forced through reduced opening 7 of hollow portion 8 of frangible cap 9, said prongs being adapted to spring away from' said pressed position when said reduced portion and said prongs have entered entirely into said hollow portion, as shown in Fig. 4, so that shank 1 will substantially register in said reduced opening and the parts will be held in sealed relation as shown in said Fig. 4. Cap 9 may be made of any suitable frangible material such, for instance, as cast iron, porcelain, glass or the like, and when the parts embodying the device of this invention are in sealing position, shown in Fig. 4, a blow of a hammer or the like upon cap 9 will break same thus breaking the seal without damaging shank 1 and its parts or member 4 and its spring prongs.

4of this invention as a sealing lock for locking together two parts, such, for instance, as parts 10 and 11, 1s shown in4 Fig. '1, wherein shank'l is inserted through appropriate openings 12 and 13 borne by parts 10 and 11, respectively, with the end of said shank bearing reduced poi-tion 3 and member 4 with spring prongs 5 protruding outwardly through opening 13, and cap 9 being slipped over said prongs as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 tothe position shown in Fig. 4 so that said. prongs having passed entirely within hollow portion 8 of cap 9 through reduced opening said prongs will spring away from-reduced portion 3 so that the ends of said prongs will be engageable against the walls i of said hollow portion adjacent said reduced opening to prevent said cap from being removed from sealing position shown in aid Fig. l4, which is the position of said cap shown, also, in Fig. 1, thus sealing parts 10 and 11 betweenv enlarged base 2 and said v cap, a portion of shank 1 adjacent reduced portion 3 substantially registering in reduced opening 7, as best seen in Fig. 4.
ATo break the seal hereinabove described, it'will be necessary merely to break cap 9 by means of a blow of 'a hammer -or the like and to remove the broken cap or to let same fall'from its sealing position in association with shank 1 and the parts borne by said shank, whereupon said shank and said'parts borne thereby may be removed from openings 12 and 13' and the parts 10 and 11 will no longer be locked together. lt will be observed that in breaking said seal the only part of the device of this invention thatgis damaged or destroyed is rangible cap 9, which may easily and cheaply be replaced by a new cap for completing the parts of the device for use on another occasion. In the drawings, shank 1 is shown to b a relatively short straight piece longitudinally, but it is, of course, understood thatsaid lshank may be relatively long if desired, and, also, that same may be curved or other- .wise extended longitudinally fromzits base 2 to its reduced end1 portion 3. v
