HINGE.
vAPPLICATION FILED JUNE 1o. 1915.
Patented Jne 2 0, 1916.
ADRIAN IVI. CROlVIMELIN, OF PASSAIC, NEW JERSEY.
HINGE.
To all Iwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ADRIAN M. CROMME- LIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Passaic, in the county of Passaic, State of New Jersey,`have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; .and I do hereby declareV the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled'in'the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in hinges, Aand has for its object to so construct a device of this'character that a door can be easily lhung or removed without the necessity of removing the attaching leaves from the door frame or door.
A further object of the invention is to provide a separable hinge so constructed that the spring may be tensioned to adapt the hinge to doors of different weight.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the hinge. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similaiview on the line Ll--l of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the door frame leaf, which is provided with the ears 2, said ears being provided with perforations 3,`which register with the perforations 4f formed in the ears 5 of the door leaf 6; Engaged between the ears 5 is a barrel 7, which registers with the perforations formed in the ears 2 and 5.
Detachably engaged in the registered perforations of the ears 2 and 5, and engaged in the barrel 7 is a pintle 8, the upper end of which is provided with a knob 9, which not only serves to prevent downward movement Specification of Letters Patent.

of the pintle, but serves as means for attaching the ring 10 to the pintle, said ring being engaged by one end of a chain 11, the other end of which is connected to the door leaf 6. The chain 11 is to prevent loss of the pintle 8 when the door is removed from the frame.
A hook 12 is connected to the uppermost ear 5 and engages the upper terminal of the coil spring 13, said spring encircling the ban rel 7 and has its lower end terminating in a handlelll which is adapted to engage either one of the notches 15 formed in the housing 16. By providing the notches 15 in the lower edge of thev housing it is obvious that the handle 14 may be moved into engagement with the desired notch to regulate the tension of the coil spring 13. The upper terminal of the coil spring 13 is comparatively long, and to accommodate the same the door frame leaf is provided with a slot 17.
The hinge is particularly adapted for use in connection with screen doors, and since the hinge is separable the pintle 8 may be removed so that the door may be stored until needed, and since the operative parts are carried by the door leaf the same are saved la housing carried by the door leaf and having notches carried by 'its lower edge, said spring having its lower end terminating in a handle for selectively engaging the notches to regulate the tension of the spring.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
