FASTENING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK H. ILSE, who am a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and-useful Improvement in Fastening Devices, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to fasteners for curtains and the like for automobiles and consists in the apparatus, arrangements, and combinations hereinafter described and specified in the claims.

Fig. 2, is also the device attached to a section of a curtain partially in section and in the locked position. Fig. 3 is avertical, central, sectional view of the apparatus on the line XX of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a longitudinal section on the line YY of Fig. 2. Fig. 5, is a detail view of the locking device separate from the rest of the apparatus. Fig. 6, is a view of the top of the button.

In the drawings, A represents a section of a curtain. To the curtain is attached two plates, an outside plate B, not shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and an inside plate O. The outer plate B has preferably tongues b, b which extend through perforations in the curtain fabric and the inside plate C and clench down, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, at F), 6, thus fastening the two plates together. Both plates have oval openings D which register. The two plates together form what I call an eyelet. A button E having a screw shank c and a flanged head 6 is rigidly fastened to any appropriate part of the body, preferably by the screwthreads, although it is obvious that the device might be a bolt with a nut upon the inside end, as shown in Fig. 4, if desired.

As I have shown in alternate construction, both Figs. 3 and 4 are different modes of fastening the head of the button E, also oval in form, as shown in Fig. 6, and is slightly smaller than the oval opening D and also Specification of Letters Patent.

smaller than that part of the opening (Z on the locking device-as shown in Fig. 5. The inner plate C is formed by folding it twice upon itself at c, c and is perforated by an aperture that is large enough to receive the button E therethrough; the folds being open, permit the locking device to slide therein as the folds form ways therefor. The folding of the inner plate twice upon itself forms a pair of guides and a boss 0.

The locking device consists of a strip of metal F having a curved outer end and preferably a perforation f therein, as a thumbpiece, by which it can he slid in and out of the ways formed by the folds 0 c. The locking slide is provided with ears projecting from its sides which prevent the slide being pushed through the eyelet. The looking device F is also formed with a perforation having an oval portion corresponding practically with the opening in the plates B and C and enabled to fit. the head or button E. On one side of this oval opening is formed a half oval extension thereof f. The transverse diameter of this smaller side opening f is substantially the size of the shank G of the button, so that when the slip or locking device is in the position shown in Fig. 1 the head of the button E can pass through the opening D and also through the oval portion of the locking device F. When in this position a slight movement of the locking device in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1, or to the position shown in Fig. 2, causes the opening f to engage the neck of the shank G of the button standard and thus locks the standard in position so that the curtain with the structure attached thereto could not be detached from the button until the locking device F is again restored by the opposite movement to the position shown in Fig. 1. A detent II is formed in the part c and in the lock F, as shown at H, which increases the frietion and prevents accidental movement of one part upon the other as the slide has a correspondingly formed detent (see Fig. 5) which can engage with the detent of the boss 0. This constitutes a very simple and cheap device and one that could be operated from the inside of the carriage both to lock and unlock the curtains thereon and Without in any way being obliged to place the operrtors hand outside of the curtain.

The mode of operation of this device is clearly apparent from the foregoing description.

It is Obvious that my invention could be modified in many ways and yet retain its essential characteristics, and without departing therefrom.

That I claim is:

'1. 3. A curtain fastener, having in eon1bination, an outer plate provided with a central aperture, an inner plate provided with a central aperture, means for fastening the two plates together, the inner plate being arranged to form guides, a slide slidable in said guides and provided with an aperture having a restricted extension, said slide being'provided with ears which engage with the inner plate to prevent the escape of the slide from the plates when the slide is operated to bring it to the unlocked position, and a button whose head can pass through the plates and the slide when the large portion of the slide aperture is in registry with the apertures of the plates and which is prevented froin escape when the restricted per- 7 tion of theslide aperture engages about the shank of the button, the said slide and inner plate being arranged to form a stress engagement to hold the slide in a locking posltion. v
