These can be manufactured and sold to the public at a very cheap rate, and will afford a most valuable and health-producing exercise. They may be conveniently located in any private house, can be used by either sex with equal advantage, and are not liable to get out of order.

FRANCIS B. OOONNOR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN LlFTlNG-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS B. OOoNNoR, of the city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lifting-Machine and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specifi cation.
This invention relates to improvements in lift- 'ing-machines of that class used for exercising the powers of the human subject; and it consists in a small platform of suitable dimensions for the operator to stand on, with .two strong India-rubber or other springs attached to it, one on or near each of two opposite sides, and made of suitable length, and provided with handles at the upper end, adapted for the operator to expend his strength on the springs by pulling them upward, as in the operation of other machines of this character.
The drawing is a perspective view of a liftingmachine such as I propose to make.
A is the platform, B the springs, and O the handles. The platform may be of any approved size, provided it be large enough for the operator to stand on and have freedom to act between the springs. The springs will be made shorter or longer, according to the size or height of the persons for whom the machine is intended; or
they may have lengthening or shortening devices for varying their lengths. The springs are made of endless rubber bands, of such thickness and body as to give the required tensional resistance, which is of course proportioned to different ages and physical strength. These can be manufactured and sold to the public at a very cheap rate, and will afford a most valuable and health-producing exercise. They may be conveniently located in any private house, can be used by either sex with equal advantage, and are not liable to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with an ordinary platform, A, and handles 0 (J, the endless rubber bands B B, arranged as and for the purpose specified.
