FRICTIONAL GEARING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 25, 1915. Serial 170. 57,808.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. CooHnAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at J onesboro, in the county of Washington and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Frictional Gearing, of'which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gearing to reversely drive a driven element and more especially with reference to 1mprovements in driving gears for the wringer rolls of washing machines and by means of which the wringer rolls may be driven by power and may be stopped and reversed as desired.
The invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure l is a side elevation of the wringing mechanism and driving gear of a washing machine constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same through the wringer rolls and on the plane indicated by the line AA of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the plane indicated on the line 13-13 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line CC of Fig. 1.
The wringing mechanism and driving gear thereof is adapted for use on a Peerless washing machine or in connection with other forms of washing machines. The base 1 has a bore or bolt of suitable length and breadth and is provided with clamps 2, 3, for securing the same on the tub or body of a washing machine, each of the clamps comprising a bolt and the clamp 3 being movable in a slot 1, according to the diameter of the tub, and being provided with a thumb nut 5.
A pair of standards 6 are secured at suitable points on the base and are each provided with vertical slots 7 and also with vertical bores 8 which are intersected by the slots. An upper longitudinal corrugated roll 9 has its shaft 10 mounted in bearings in the standards 6 and also has a ball-bearing 11 in astandard 12. Lower wringer rolls 18 are provided, of which there are three as here shown, said rolls 13 being smooth or plane on their peripheries and having spindles 14 at their ends which are press articles of clothing or the like between themand the upper roll for wringing said articles by passing them between the opposing wringer rolls as will be understood. On
the inner end of the shaft 10 is a friction disk 18.
A standard 19 which is fixed is at the outer end of the base 1 and at a suitable distance from the standard 19 is a standard 20 which has a vertical centrally arranged pivot 21 at its lower end mounting the said standard 20 on the base for angular movement with reference to the ends of the friction disk. A transversely arranged shaft 22 is mounted in bearings 23 on the standard 20 and is provided at its ends with friction pulleys 2 1, 25 either of which may be engaged with the friction disk, said pulleys being opposed to opposite sides of said disk, as shown in Fig. 8. A bevel gear 26 is secured on the shaft 22. A longitudinally arranged shaft 27 is mounted in a bearing in the standard 19, is provided with a belt or power pulley 28 and is also provided with a bevel gear 29 which is engaged with the gear 26 so that the shaft 22 is driven by the shaft 27. A lever 30 is secured on the upper end of the standard 20 and extends from one side thereof and is grasped by the operator. By turning the lever and hence the standard 20 in one direction, or the other, either the friction pulley 24 or the friction pulley 25 may be engaged with the friction disk and hence the friction disk and the wringer rolls may be driven in either direction and readily reversed. By turning the standard 20 to a position exactly parallel with the friction disk, both of the friction pulleys may be disconnected from the friction 'disk to stop the operation of the rolls while permitting the shaft 27 to continue to be driven by its pulley and a power belt.

Having described the invention, What is claimed is:

said shaft being also provided With apoWer Wheel and with a beveled gear, a
shaft arranged at right angles to the pivotal axis of the movable standard, having bearings in said standard and provided at its ends with friction pulleys opposed to opposite sides of the disk and either of which may be engaged With the disk, a beveled gear on said shaft engaging the first named bevel. gear, and a lever attached directly to said removable standard and arranged to actuate the same.
