CHECK-CUTTER;
Applicationfiled April 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN F. SHo-n- MAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check- Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to check cutters, adapted to be secured to a check book 1n position to be adjusted for severing the checks from the stub'at a point to indicate the face value of the check, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a simple device which can be connected to a check book or a holder thereforand which can be quickly moved into posit on to sever the check from the stub at a polnt indicated upon the stub which will give the face value of the check.
The foregoing and otherobjects may be attained by means oftheconstruction illustrated in the accompanying drawlngs, in which j Figure 1 is a perspective view of a check hook holder designed for containing a number of checks to be carried in the pocket, Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the check book holder opened out and the checks removed, Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of a fragmentary part of the check, and the cutter adjusted in line for severing the check from the stub, Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 7 is an end view of the adjustable cutter.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 designates the body of a holder for a number of checks made in the form of a tablet. The holder is provided with flaps l and 1 which together with the body, are made of a single piece of leather or other suitable flexible material. The body 1 has a long pocket 2, and the flap 1 has a short pocket 3, said pockets having entrance openings 4 and 5 oppositely disposed. The flap 1 is adapted'to befolded along the line 6 upon the body 1, and the flap 1 is adapted to be folded along the line 7 upon the body 1 and upon the flap 1. The flap 1 is provided with a clasp or Speeification of Letters Patent.
Patented June13, 1916.
1915. Serial No. 20,909.
fastener 9 which engages the coacting member 10 secured to the flap 1 Connected to the free end of the flap 1 is a cutter comprising a guide plate 11 having a rib 12 bent therefrom and extending longitudinally'thereof and a flange 13 bent from the inner side edge thereof to form a space between the flange 13 and'the upper side of the body portion 11 of the guide plate. Mounted to slide on the guide plate is a blade '14, said cutter having a long1- tudinally extending guide way 15 forming a hollow rib which is located between the longitudinal edges of theblade and which incloses the rib 12 on the guide plate and slides thereon. The inner portion of the blade 14 extends underneath the flange 13, thus providing means for holding the blade firmly in place and permitting it to slide on the .rib 12.
The guide plate 11 is connected to the end of the flap 1 by means of prongs 16 bent up from the flange 13 of the guide member 11 and extending through the material from which the holder 1 is formed. The end cutting edge 17 of the blade 14 is inclined as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing and the front cutting edge 18 is plain, and said blade 14 is provided with a finger hold 19 for moving the blade lengthwise of the rib 12 and crosswise of the check; As the flap 1 is flexible, the cutter may be readily and quickly adjusted lengthwise of the check to properly position the blade 14.
The check book 20 is provided with a short back piece 21 that slides into the pocket 2 through the opening 5, thus hold ing the checks firmly in place and the checks are adapted to be doubled at the point 22 to occupy but little space in the pocket.
The checks in the check book 20 are each provided with a double column of inclined lines 23, and between the inclined lines are figures or ordinals giving the different face values of checks to be drawn and the blade 14 is adjustable to permit the checks. to be torn upon the inclined lines 23 and upon straight lines from the inclined lines to the bottom of the check.
In the guide member 11 there is a longitudinally extending groove located beneath the flange 13, and formed by pressing the metal out, as at a, and on the blade 14 is an indentation a to form a stopto prevent the accidental removal of the blade 14. The ends of the groove 0; are closed.
invention can be carried in the pocket con' nected to a holder, and the checks may be held firmly to the holder in such position that the cutter may sever the checks at any one of the inclined lines 23 which will indicate the face value of the check and will not permit it to be altered without detection.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined in the claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A cutter of the character described. comprising a guide plate, a flange extending from one side edge of the plate and overlying a portion of the upper side thereof, a longitudinally extending rib on the upper side of the plate in spaced relation to the free longitudinal edge of the flange, and a blade slidably mounted upon the plate and having a longitudinally extending guide way located between its side edges and slidably receiving the rib, and the inner portion of the blade being located beneath the flange.
2. A cutter of the character described comprising a guide plate, a flange extending from one side edgeof the plate and overlying a portion of the upper side thereof, said plate having a longitudinally extending groove provided with closed ends and located beneath the flange, a longitudinally extending rib on the upper side of the plate in spaced relation to the free longitudinal edge of the flange, a blade slidably mounted upon the plate and having a longitudinally extending guide way located between its side edges and slidably receiving the rib, the inner portion of said blade being located beneath the flange, and a lug formed on the underside of said inner portion, said lug extending into said groove, and adapted to limit the sliding movement of the blade upon the plate.
3. In combination, a check holder having a flexible flap, a guide plate, a flange extending from one side edge of the plate and overlying a portion of the upper sides thereof, means securing the flange to the free end of the flap, a longitudinally extending rib on the upper side of the plate in spaced relation to the free longitudinal edge of the flange, and a blade slidably mounted upon the plate and having a longitudinally extending guide way located between its side edges and slidably receiving the rib, and the inner portion of said blade being located beneath the flange.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
