To (tutti/ 1,0772 it may concern 7 Be it known that I, HUGH I-I. IV nmAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tunbridge, in the .county of Orange and tate of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cattle-Stanchions, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to the care of'live stock, and particularly to stanchion s, and the invention has for its primary object a durable and efficient construction of stanchion which will be easy to manufacture, cheap in construction, durable and not liable to get out of order, and self-acting in operation, in that the cow, by inserting her head between the relatively vertical side bars of the stanchion, will by that act cause the stanchion to close and be locked automatically inclosed position. And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
'For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which,

My improved stanchion comprises spaced bottom cross bars 1, spaced upper cross bars 2, a relatively stationary side bar 3, secured by nails, screws, or similar fastening devices at its upper and lower ends in between the cross bars 1 and 2, and a relatively movable side bar 4:, which is pivoted at its lower end, as at 5 in between the bottom cross bars, and works at its free end in between the'upper cross bars 2. The stanchion may be swung in the stall at top and bottom in any desired way.
In connection with the movable side bar 4,
I provide a substantially automatic locking device 6. This is in the form of a weighted bar, or lever, which is pivotally' mounted intermediate of its ends, as at 7, in between the extended ends of the upper cross bars 2, said locking lever being formed with a shoulder 8 to limit its movement in one direction when it assumes a vertical position, as shownin Fig. 1. One arm of the lever 6 is weighted, as at 9, in any desired way, and
thisvarm has a beveled extremity 10 which is designed to co-act with'a beveled notch or recess 11 formed in the outer edge of the bar 4 at the upperend of the latter, said recess terminating at its lower ends in a shoulder l2vand increasing in depth from the shoulder upward.
In the practical operation of a stanchion constructed in accordance with my invention, when the stanchion is opened, the counterweighted lever 6 will assume the vertical position shown in Fig. 1, one edge of the lever resting against the side edge of the movable side bar 4:. When the cow inserts her head between the bars 3 and 4, she will naturally press or move the bar 4 outward, and this will cause said bar by its engagement or contact with the lever 6,
to over-balance said lever, whereupon the weight 9 will act and the weight of the lever will cause the bar 4 to move inwardly until the beveled edge 10 of the lever 6 will ride into the recess 11 and be prevented from moving down too far' by coming to a rest upon the shoulder 12, 'whereupon, as is evident, the stanchion will be locked in closed position.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a very durable and efficient stanchion which does not employ any springs that are so liable to get out of order and which can be very easily and cheaply made and which will be selfacting in its operation.
I have stated at the outset of the specification that the stanchion may be swung in the stall at top and bottom in any desired way; and while that is true, yet I preferably anount the stanchion in a framework embodying a lower bar or bars 13'and upper bars 14:, the latter being preferably arranged in pairs, in laterally spaced relation to each other, whereby, when the lever 6 assumes its vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1, it will extend up in between the bars 14 and thereby hold the stanchion from turning before'the cow takes her place, but which allows the stanchion to swing freely when the lever is down, as is evident.
While the accompanying drawing illustrates What I believe to be, the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, 'but that various changes may be made in the construction,arrangements and proportions of the; parts Without departing from the scope of 'the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What isclaimed is I A cattle stanchion, comprising upper and lower cross bars, side bars connected to the cross bars, one of said side bars being pivoted at its lowerend toswing in and out toward ancl'away from the other side bar, the plvoted side bar being formed in its upper end with a beveled recess terminating at its lower narrower end in a shoulder, a lever pivotally mounted intermediate of its ends to the upper cross bars adjacent the pivoted sidebar, said lever being designed to move from a vertical to a substantially horizontal position and having its upper arm Weighted and beveled at its end and designed to ride down upon the Wall of the beveled recess of the pivoted side bar to force the pivotedside bar, into closed position and to rest upon said shoulder to lock the pivoted 'side bar in closed position.
