Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. Conner, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Clamps for Lamp-Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tie rod clamps for lamp brackets for vehicles, and has for its object to provide this class. of tie rod clamp comprising a body portion forming a socket for receiving the end of the tie rod, said body having means whereby it may be caused to grip or be clamped upon the tie rod and also providing'a clamping member at the end of said socket for engaging and gripping one horn ofthe lamp bracket.
A further object of this invention is to set the horn clamp sothat the axis of its clamping portion is at a right angle to that of the tie rod socket and to offset said clamp to the rear of the socket axis to facilitate the positioning of this clamping member upon the lamp forks of a certain type of automobile.
A further object of the invention is to provide means in the socket member whereby the tie rod may be adjusted endwise to accommodate the varying distances between lamp brackets on different vehicles.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully de scribed and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Of the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation showing my improved clamping device in position on the lamp brackets of the vehicle to which it is adapted to be applied. Fig. 2 is a top view showing a portion of the vehicle hood and the relative position of my clamping device as attached to the lamp forks showing the arrangement whereby the offsetting of the clamp is necessary. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the clamp member. Fig. 4:- is a plan view of the clamp member showing the axis of the fork clamp offset to the rear of the axis of the rod socket and showing a portion of the rod adjustablv retained in its socket. Fig. 5- is a modification showing the rod socket as threaded whereby the rod may be adjusted endwise therein, also showing a forked outer end adapted to engage and be bound to the horn of the lamp bracket. Fig. 6 is an end view of the modified form of clamp. Fig. 7 is a detail of the tie rod which is provided with right and left hand threads at its opposite ends whereby rotating of the same in its clamps will extend or shorten its operating length.
Referring to the drawing, 10 designates the body or socket portion of theclamp memberwhich has an elongated body split at 11 on one side and provided with a pair of ears 12 through one of which a screw 13 passes, andis threaded into the opposite ear. The bore of this socket member is of a size to receive a tie rod 14 of the required diameter. This socket member has a clamping member 15 extending directly outward from the end thereof, thesame being provided with a cap 16, which is connected thereto by means of binding screws 17 and 18. The cap and the clamp member. between them are provided with a homer hole 19 whose axis is set at a right angle to that of the socket member,
and said bore is ofi set to the rear of the axis of said socket member for the express purpose of receiving and accommodating the lamp bracket horn 20, see Fig. 2, which is set back substantially in line with the front place them under tension, and the binding screws 13-13 are set up in the different sockets upon the tie rod holding the whole firm and rigid against shaking or rattling.
In some instances instead of providing a cap to the clampingmember, as illustrated in Fig. 1, I form an outwardly extending clamp portion provided with a U-shaped yoke, preferably turned at right angles to the axis of the socket, which yoke is adapted to be passed around the horn 20 of the lamp bracket and a bolt 22 is passed through the ends 23 of the yoke so that when the nut 24 is set up it will tighten the yoke about the horn and bind the same firmly in position thereon. through one side thereof and provided with two pairs of ears 27 and 28 which are adapted to be drawn together by means of screws 29 and 30 to bind the. rod therein. The rod 31 shown in Fig. 7 is provided'with right and left hand threads 32 and 33 at its opposite ends and adapted to be screwed into these threaded sockets, whereby by rotating the rod in the sockets the working length of the device is adjusted and regulated to suit the different vehicles to which it is applied,
andafter the device has been positioned on the horns of thedifi'erent lamp brackets, the rod, is rotated "until sufiicient tension has been applied to these brackets and then by setting up the screws 29 and 30 the sockets are boundfirmly in position to the rod hold- I '7 ing the same firmly and securely therein.
' The device aswill be seen is designed more particularly to be applied to a particular slight'variation in the position of the brackets in thedifi'erent cars it is absolutely necessary to provide means whereby a lengthwise adjustment of thetie rod. in itssocket may be obtained, whetheritis to slidelengthwise copies of this patent may be obtained for in the socket, as illustrated in Fig. 4, or be threaded thereinto for adjustment as illustrated in Fig. 5.
I claim:
1. The combination with a lamp bracket tie rod, of a clamp member at either end thereof, each of said members having a socket portion in which the rod end adjustably fits, means in the socket member for binding the rod ends, each of said socket members being provided with a clamping member for engaging and clamping a horn of the lamp brackets.
2. The combination with a lamp bracket tie rod, of a clamp member at either end thereof, each of said members having a socket portion in which the rod end adj ustably' fits, means'in thesocket member for binding the rod ends, each of said socket members being provided with a clamping member for engaging and clamping a horn of the lamp brackets, the axis of said clamps being set at right angles to that of the rod and oii'set to the rear thereof.
