LocKiNG DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 13, 1916.
Application filed September 1, 1915. Serial No. 48,463.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, IILLrAM F. Diesen, or Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, h-ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had-to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My invention has for its object to provide a novel form of locking device which isparticularly applicable in connection with a special form of attachment designed for such purposes as locking a spare tire in place on an automobile, and comprising generally'a chain adapted to surround the tire and a part of the frame of the machine and held in place by a lock which cooperates to retain the two ends of `the chain together and prevent their separation.l Vith this general purpose to be accomplished, the invention has for a more particular object to insure absolutely locking a chain in place in such a manner as to prevent either accidental or unauthorized removal.
In a more specific aspect the invention consists in the provision of a lock that can not be opened by tampering with it, or in any way except by using the proper key, and
which can be locked quickly and without requiring the use of a key.
'Io these and other ends the invention consists of certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view illustrating the application of the invention and showing the manner in which the device is used; Fig. 2 is a front view of the lock with a portion of the chain attached; Fig. 3 is an elevation, partly in section with the housing plate removed, and showing the position of the parts with the bolt unlocked; Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating the position assumed by the parts when ythe bolt is locked, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5ft-*5a of Fig. 4.
Similar reference numerals throughoutl with a cover plate 2, suitably attached thereto and serving to hold the parts of the lock within the housing as will appear more fully n hereinafter. The housing is provided with a recess or opening 3, while 4 is a pin connecting opposite portions of the housing and forming a. means of attachment Jfor one end of the chain 5 as appearing in Figs. 1 and 2.
G-designates the bolt which is of the deadlock type, and slidably arranged within the housing, being held in normal position or unlocked by means of a spring 7 connectedr at one end tothe bolt by the pin 8, and at its other end to the housing by a pin 9. Pivotally arranged within the housing is a plurality of tumblers designated at 10, and mounted on the post 11, one above the other, andeach controlled by a leaf springV 12, which acts to move the tumbler and holdit in the position shown in Fig. 4. I preferably employ three such tumblers, although any 'number may be used, and each embodies a recess or opening 13 for receiving a lug 14 on the bolt when the latter is unlocked as shown in Fig. 3.
15 is a lug carried by each tumbler at its outer edge, and cooperating with the projection 15 on the bolt to limitV the inward movement of` the tumbler in the manner shown in Fig. 4. V Y
16 is a key guide rotatively arranged in the housing to receive a key, and permit the latter to be brought into successive coperation with the several tumblers, in kunlocking the bolt, until they are all in the position shown in Fig. 3.
The operation of the device briefly is as follows: With the bolt in the position shown in Fig.'3, the free end of the chain is brought through the opening 3 and drawn taut around the tire, after which the bolt 6 is pushed inwardly against the action of the spring 7 until the lug V14 is entirely withdrawn from the recesses in the tumblers, The tumblers are then free to move and by their springs 12, are turned on their axes to the position shown in Fig. 4, where they engage the lug 14 and prevent outward movement ofthe bolt. The latter is held means of a shoulder or abutment 17 inthe housing. When the parts are in this position, the bolt is held positively against movement in either direction, and can not be released by picking the lock, or by the insertion of any sortV of an instrument except the proper key which is formed so as tocoperate properly with the different tumblers and move them their predetermined distances, until all of the recesses 13 are again brought into alinement with the lug 14. The Yspring 7 then acts to Withdraw the bolt again into theposition of Fig. 3. When the parts Vare locked, the bolt does not extend lentirely across the opening 3 but only part way, or far enough to abut against a side of the chain between adjacent enlargements on VsuccessiveV links, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the space Vbetween the innermost edge of the bolty and the'pin 4 is insulicient to permit the chain to be withdrawn.
The lstructure described embodies a sim- Y ple arrangement which can be manufactured at a reasonable cost, and is especially eliicient in carrying out the purposes of such a device, by providing a lock that is positively locked and proof against tampering,
` strong enough for all ordinary strains to VY*copies of this patent may be obtained for which it maybe subjected and which can be locked instantly and Vrequires the use of a key only in rivmoving.l Y
` I claim Vas my invention:
l. In a Vlocking device, the combination with a housing rhaving an opening there- .with a housing having an opening therethrough, of a chain one end of which is adapted to be inserted through said opening, a dead lock bolt movable freely in the housing from unlocked to locked position and adapted to be projected partially into said opening to abut against one side of the chain between adjacent enlargements thereon,
`means carried bythe bolt and extending outside the housing for moving 1t from unlocked to locked position, and a plurality of key controlled v'tumbler-s which act to hold the ybolt in locked position.
