Description

' A. A. LUTTERMAN.
SASH HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR- 4. 1916- 1,186,]. 12. Patented June 6, 1916.
y j v .ZZZZZKZWZflE Witnesses/ inventor 1 22PM 4 by I I Attorneys AEILTA. LUTTERMAN, OF AGKLEY, IOWA.
SASH-I-IOLDER;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June6, 1916.
Application filed March 4, 1916.- Serial No. 82,'-158.'
To all whom it. may concern:
Be it known that I, AEILT A. LUTTERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ackley, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Sash-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for supporting window sashes in any positions to which they may be shifted, one of the objects being to provide a simple and compact device of this type which can be applied readily to an ordinary sash and which will operate to securely hold the sash in any position to which it may be raised, whether or not a counterbalance is used in connection with the sash.
A further object is to provide a holder of this character which is cheap to manufacture and which does not detract from the appearance of the sash to which it is secured.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a sash and a portion of the casing and showing the present improvements combined therewith. Fig. 2 is a section on line AB of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line CD Fig. 2.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference E designates a portion of one of the stiles of a sash and F designates a portion of the casing in which the sash is mounted, this casing being provided with the usual strips G between'which is formed a guide channel H in which the sash works. A recess 1 is formed in one side of the stile E and secured within this recess is a tongue 2 provided at one end of a face plate 3, said face plate being secured to the inner side of the stile E as shown particularly in Figs. 1 and 2. A transverse channel 4 is formed in the stile E directly back of the face plate 3 and mounted for rotation in this channel is a pin 5 provided at one end with a stem Gextending through an openlng 7 in the face plate 3. At the outer end of the-stem is provided a weight 8 which constitutes a knob. The other end of the pin 5 is provided with a cam 9. This cam has its long axis normally inclined downwardly away from the pin 5 so that the cam is thus pressed yieldingly against the adjacent wall of the channel H by the weight of the the sash can be lowered by pushing up-' wardly on the sash and then releasing the sash and the knob 8, the knob will swing the cam against the wall of the channel with the result that the sash will be locked in its elevated position as before described.
It will be seen that the device herein described can be cheaply manufactured, can be easily applied and does not detract from the appearance of the sash.
It is preferred to slightly flatten the periphery of the cam where it engages the wall of the channel so as thus to present a more extensive surface for frictional engagement with the wall than would otherwise be the case. This flattening of the cam has been shown in Fig. 2.
\Vhat is claimed is 1. The combination with a casing having a guide and a sash having a stile mounted to slide within the guide, there being a recess in the side of the stile within the guide, of a face plate secured to the stile, a pin mounted for rotation back of the face plate, a knob connected to the pin and constituting a weight, and a cam secured to the pin and mounted for swinging movement in the recess, said knob constituting means for holding the cam normally pressed against one wall of the guide.
2. The combination with a casing having a guide channel, and a sash having a stile a recess in the side face of the stile, of a face "plate secured to the stile, a tongue extending from the face plate and secured Within the recess, a pin mounted for rotation in the stile and back of the face plate, 5 a stem projecting from one end of the pin, 21 combined Weight and knob upon the stem, and 21- cam at the other end of the pin and mounted to swing Within the recess in the stile, said knob constituting means for h01ding the cam normally pressed against one 10 Wall of the channel. A In testimcny that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
AEILT A. LUTTERMAN. W'itnesses F 1:111) S. EGGERT, FRED E. TRAINER.
