Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Portland, county of Multnomah, and
State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which `the following is a specification.
My invention relates to oil burners of the type adapted for burning oil mixedV with steam, and has among its salient objects to provide certain improvements in the construction and arrangement thereof whereby I am able witha single operating member to simultaneously regulate the feed of the oil and steam into the mixing chamber, and also to operate the members which regulate the discharge from the burner, thereby providing a construction which makes more easiiy possible and practical the automatic control of the burner; to' provide a construction of the character referred to inv which all of the controlling members are also adjustably secured to the operating member, whereby to make possible an adjustment of each member relative to the opening or out let which it controls; and, in general, to provide "i an oil burner of the character referme-1. to a simpliied and improved conation, whereby greater efficiency can be secured because of better regulation, and whereby suitable means for automatically controlling the samecan be very conveniently adapted thereto.
In order .that others may thoroughly understand 4my improved burner, I have shown .in the accompanying sheet of drawings one practical embodiment thereof which I will new describe, and in which,-

Referring now more in detail to the draw ings, the burner A .comprises three parts, a combination attachingand mixingmember l, a middle body portion 2, anda discharge c ap 3. The attaching and mining member 1 is threaded interiorly, as at' 153,130

The -member 1, is provided therethrough with a series of steam passageways, as ld, leading from the discharge end of the steam pipe 4, as indicated. Said-member l is'also pro vided therethrough with a series of oil dis# charge passageways, le, leading-fromithe discharge end of the oil supply pipe 5, as indicated., Said body member l is also extended into 'a tapered portion, as l', as shown.`
Mounted through said oil supply 'pipe 5 and through said burner is an operating rod orV member 6, threaded through the extension l whereby said rod ,can be moved longitud-i` nally through the burner by turning, though it is evident that the threads might be omitted and a sliding t provided for the rod 6 within the extension l, if desired. Secured upon said rod 6, by means of lock nut 7, is a vdeflecting member S, adapted to fit into the end of the extension l, which is formed accordingly, whereby to regulate thedischarge openings of the oil passageways 1,.assaid operating rod 6 is moved in one direction or the other, as clearly indicated. Also mounted upon said operating rod 6, to move therewith, is a chambered member `9, adjustably secured in place by means of lock nuts 9-9, said member 9 being adapted to slidably fit within the middle body portion 2, and hav.-
ing one end constructed to fit over' the. ta- 1 pered extension I', as at 9a, and Haring out-- wardly in its interior "to receive the discharge from the steam passageways fla,- through the member l, as indicated.` As said member 9 is movedrearwardly` by said operating rod 6, the openend thereof moves over the tapered portion l', at 9a, in such manner as to close the annular passageway therebetween, and as it is moved forwardly, said passageway is opened because of; the taper of the member l.

The dischargepassageways ld, 1C and 9b are preferably arranged so as to make their discharges in a whirling or rmixing manner and thereby more thoroughly mix the oil and steam for combustion purposes. have also illustrated in F ig. 1, one means for automatically operating -lthe operating rod 6, which consists in providing it engaged and operated by a raclr 14, which may. be connected to and operated from any suitable heat or. pressure-controlled regulatingmember. lfhave shown an expansion member 15, adapted, as at l5 to be connected with the boiler, whereby the pressure in the boiler operates to expand said member 15 and thereby move the operating rack 14- and opcrate the' rod 6, i'n a manner which will be readily understood.4 l Thus by the simple moif'ement oira single operating member, the rod 6, I am able to make a plurality ot adjustments and regulations and control both the flow of the steam and the oil, as well `as the discharge from the burner into the combustion chamber in which it may be set. I am aware that changes can be made in the form of the invention 'here shown for illustrative purposes without departing from the spirit thereof, and l do not, therefore,

A oil burner comprising in combination a body having connections tor oil and steam -pipesarranged one within the other, a chambered member movably mounted Within said body, said body having series ot' small passagen'ays communicating .vith the oil and steam pipes and discharging into said chambered member, and an operating member within' said burner body for moving said chambered member, the latter being provided with a series ot discharge passageways at its outer end, and means for regulating the discharge from said burnerbody.

In an oil burner, in combination. a coupling member having connections tor oil and steam pipes arranged one within the other and having a series of small passageways therethrough for each pipe connection, a body connected to said coupling member, a cap for said body and provided with a discharge opening, an operating rod movably mounted longitudinally through said burner, a controlling member with mixing chamber therein mounted on said rod and movable therewith and into Which said small passageways.discharge, said member having a series of passageways' from its opposite end, and a controlling member mounted on said rod in the discharge opening trom said cap and movable by said rod, substantially as described.

In an oil burner, in combination. a body having a Iaipling member with a tapered extension and connections for oil and steam pipes arranged one within the other, said coupling member having a series of small passageways therethrough for each pipe connection discharging into the interior ot' said body, said body having a discharge opening at one end, an operating rod through said burner body, a member thereon for controlling theI oil passagewaysf` a member thereon for controlling the steam supply, and a member thereon for regulating the discharge opening from said burner body. all ot said members being movable with' said operating rod to simultaneously regulate said passagevvays and opening, substantially as described.

In an oil burner, in combination, a. coupling member having oil and steam pipe connections, arranged one Within the other and having a series of passageivays therethrough for cach pipe connection, a body portion, and a cap With discharge opening therein, an operating rod extending longitudinally through said burner, a part on said rod adapted to Control the oil passageivays, a parton said rod adapted to control the steam supply :trom said steam passage- Ways, a member controlling the passageway into said cap, and a member in the discharge opening of said cap for regulating the same, all of said parts and members moving with said operating rod and adapted to simultaneously change their positions with the movement of said rod.
