To all whom it may concern:

it known that I, FRANK F. HENDRICK- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garfield, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drum- Beaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in drum heaters and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with bass drums; and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be operated with convenience and facility through the medium of the pedal and Whereby the device may be readily and effectively clamped in operative position upon the drum.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved drum beater whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler,less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating a drum beater constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a coacting portion of a drum and cymbal being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a View in front elevation of my improved beater as herein embodied; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 41 is a fragmentary view illustrating a detail of my present invention relative to the striker arm; and F ig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating the mounting for the beater rod.

engaged therewith through the medium of the winged nut 3 threaded upon the upstanding member 1 carried by the foot 1. The plate 2 is removably mounted upon the foot 1 and is provided in its outer end with through which is directed the stub shaft 11.'

The shaft 11 is maintained in applied position through the medium of the clamping members 12 and 1st threaded upon the shaft 11 and arranged at opposite sides of the standard 9. The shaft 11 is also disposed through an opening 15 formed in the rod supporting member 16, the opposite faces of said member 16 being provided with the race-ways 17 concentric to the opening 15 and in which the anti-friction members 18 are arranged, said anti-friction members being preferably spherical bodies. The adjacent face of the clamping member lat is truncated in form and coacts with the antifriction members 18 at one side of the member 16 while the anti-friction members 18 at the opposite side of the member 16 coact with the annular tapered face 19 of the head 20 formed on the outer end of the shaft 11. The head 20 is provided with the groove 21 to permit convenient removal or application of the shaft 11. The upper face of the member 16 at a point offset relative to the shaft 11 is provided with a recess or pocket 22 to receive the lower extremity of the beater rod 23, said rod being clamped to the mem ber 16 through the medium of the clamping screw 24. The outer end of the beater rod is provided with the beater 25 preferably formed of solid felt.

rod 23. The bolt 27 also serves as a pivot for the striker arm 29 adapted to engage the cymbal C, the outer end of the arm 29 being provided with the head 30 for direct contact with the cymbal C. It is to be observed that downward movement of the striker arm 29 is limited by contact of the pivoted end thereof with the rod 23 but the upper portion of the pivoted end of said striker arm 29 is rounded, as at 31, so that said striker arm may be readily thrown out of operative position when it is desired to have the head 25 coact with the drum without a sounding of the cymbal. The forward face of the offset portion 8 of the foot is provided with a recess 32 adapted to receive an end portion of the rod 33 of predetermined length, the outer end of said rod being bent at right angles, as at 3%, to intersect the plane occupied by the foot 1. Pivotally engaged with the angular portion 34 are the arms 35 arranged at the lower end of the pedal P, while the upper end of said pedal is operatively connected through the medium of the interposed link 36 with the upstanding arm 37 preferably arranged at right angles to the rod 23, said arm 37 being carried by the member 16. The member 16 is also provided with a depending lip 38 to which is secured an extremity of a retractable member 39, herein disclosed as a coil spring, the opposite extremity of said member 39 being secured to the clip 40 capable of adjustment longitudinally of the upright 9 whereby the tension of the retractable member 39 may be regulated in order to assurethe requisite balance of the parts. As herein disclosed, the standard 9 13 provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 1L1 through which is directed the headed screw member 12 also disposed through the clip 40 and said screw 42 has coacting therewith a winged clamping nut a3 whereby said clip is effectively maintained in its desired adjustment relative to the standand 9.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a drum beater constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and com paratively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.

I claim:

A drum beater consisting of a standard, a shaft disposed through the upper end of the standard, clamping members mounted upon the shaft and coacting with the opposite faces of the standard, a holder member rotatably mounted upon the shaft adjacent one of the clamping members, each opposite face of the holder being provided with a race-way, one of said race-ways coacting with the adjacent face of the clamping member, said shaft being provided with a head coacting with the second race-way of the holder, anti-friction members arranged within. each race-way, a beater rod engaged with the holder, a rod detach ably engaged with the standard adjacent the lower end thereof and having its outer end angularly disposed, a pedal rotatabl supported by the angular portion of the rod: an arm carried by the holder member, a link interposed between the inner end of the pedal and the outer end of the arm of the holder member, a clip secured to the standard below the holder member and capable of adjustment longitudinally of the stand ard, and a retractile member interposed between the clip and the holder for automatically imparting movement to the holder member in a direction opposite to the movement of the holder member afforded by a depression of the pedal.
