THE COLUMBIA PLANDGRAPH 60-. WASHINGTON, D. c.
JOSEPH JURAS, OF NEW YORK MILLS, NEW YORK.
ASH-SIFTER.
Specification of Letters Batent.
Patented June 6, 1916.
Application filed October 11, 1915. Serial No. 55,257.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH JURAs, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York Mills, in the county' of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Sifters, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ash sifters.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of an inexpensive device'in the form of an ash sifter for house-hold use adapted for easy operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide an ash sifting device especially adapted for household use being easily operated when desired for sifting ashes, the parts thereof being readily separable when desired to remove the cinders or clean the device.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a swinging sifting frame adapted for holding an ash container and to impart a sudden jar to the latter during each manual reciprocation thereof.
WVith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the device, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the cover broken away.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, a supporting frame is provided having four corner posts 10 connected together by opposite pairs of end rails and side rails 11 and '12 respectively positioned adjacent the lower and upper ends of the said posts.
A shiftable plate 13 is swingingly mounted between the upper side rails 11 of the said frame by means of oppositely positioned cranks 14 which are journaled in bearing blocks 15 positioned adjacent the corners of the plate 13 and upon the lower side thereof. The said plate 13 is provided with a circular central opening 16 adapted for the reception of a removable ash container such as the metallic receptacle 17 a depending spider 17 being carried by the opposite handles 21 by which the same may be readily removed from the receptacle when desired.
An operating means is provided for the device consisting of a resilient angular lever 22 having a horizontally arranged handle 23 at the upper end of the vertical outer portion 24 thereof, while the main portion of the handle is provided with an oval shaped ring 25 which encircles the plate opening 16 as well as the receptacle 17, when the same is positioned therein, the said ring beformed of flat metal and slidably positioned upon the upper face of the plate 13. A finger 26 is provided at the rear end of the ring 25 and has a longitudinal slot 27 therein corresponding to a slot 28 in the handle 22 adjacent the forward side of the said ring and headed screws 29 are carried adjacent the front and rear edges of the plate 13 and extend through the said slots 27 and 28 for retaining the said ring 25 slidably positioned upon the said plate 13. It will thus be seen that with the plate 13 shiftably suspended upon the cranks 14B and with the receptacle 17 removably positioned through the ring 25 and the plate openings 16, the cover 20 of the receptacle may be readily removed and ashes deposited into the basket 19. By grasping the handle 23 and pulling same outwardly, one end wall of the slots 2728 will be forcibly brought into engagement with the screws 29 thereby imparting a sudden ar to the plate 13 as well as the ash receptacle 17 and sieve carried thereby. When the outward pull on the handle is relieved the plate 13 swings back, and as the handle is pushed inwardly it'slides on the plate and the other ends of the slots 27-28 are brought forcibly into engagement with the screws 29. The ashes in the basket 19 will be thus considerably agitated and shaken up by the repeated reciprocations and jarring of the plate 13 allowing the smaller particles to fall within the receptacle 17, so that the ashes willbe completely sifted and the cinders will remain in the basket 19, which may be removed from the receptacle 17. The receptacle may then be emptied and the device is ready for further operation.
\Vhile the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor plate, a sifting basket removably-mounted' in said receptacle, and an operating handle having a slidable connection with said plate for jarring the latter as the handle is reciprocated.
2. A11 ash Sifter comprising a frame, de-
pending cranks oppositelyjournaled through i the said frame, a swinging plate journaled between the said cranks and having a central opening therethrough, a spider carried by the said plate beneath the said opening an ash receptacle positioned through the said opening upon the said spider, a foraininous -basket :removably positioned within the said receptacle, an oval ring slidably mounted upon. the said plate surrounding the said re ceptacle, stop retaining means for the said ring carried by said plate, and manual reciprocating means carried. by the said plate.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
JOSEPH J URAS.
