Description

W. F. VON BARTHELD.
RAILWAY RAIL.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.2B.
Patente J une 6, 1916.
fwmmmummmll WILLIAM F. VON BARTHELD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IrArLwaYnarI..
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1916.
Application led Marlch, 1916. n Serial No. 87,315.
To all whom may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. VON' BARTHELD, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at New York city, in the county ot' New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
This invention relates to improvements in railway rails, and particularly to street railway rails. A Y
One object of the invention is to provide a street railway rail which can be quickly and easily repaired, without the necessity of digging up the adjacent portionsof the street paving.
Another object is to provide a street railway rail which has a removable tread member, and means for securing the tread member to the body of the rail so constructed and arranged that the flange of the ear wheel will engage with the heads of the bolts and have a tendency to force the fastening means back into normal position should they become loosened.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rail made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a pair of rails constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View on the line 4 4: of Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, the rail includes a base portion 10, a vertical web portion 11, a head portion 12, and a removable tread portion 13. On the upper face of the head portion 12 there are formed two longitudinally extending grooves 14 into which are received the longitudinally extending ribs 15 formed on the under face of the tread portion 13. This tread portion has the longitudinal channel 16 in its upper face as is usual in the U-type of rails, in street railways. center' of the head portion 12 there is a line of threaded sockets 17 which aline with vertical openings 18 formed through the tread portion 13, said openings having their upper portions countersunk to receive the heads ofv the bolts 19 which are passed therethrough and secured into the sockets 17.
The bolts which are disposed through the right hand rail are provided with right hand threads while those passed through the left hand rail are provided with left hand threads, whereby when any of the bolts work upwardly into the channels 16, they will be engaged by the flanges of the car wheels and turn thereby so as to be driven downwardly and heldin such position. It will be noted that this is effected by having the heads of the bolts positioned so that they lie closer to the outside of the slots or channels 16 and that this enables the inner parts of the heads to be engaged by the flanges of the wheels, the outer parts of the heads being protected from such engagement by reason of the running of such flanges in the ordinary construction of wheels. When applying the bolts, graphite is placed in the openings and sockets so that there will be no tendency toward rusting, thus more easily permitting of the removal of the bolts when it is desired to take off the tread portion for repairs, or for replacing the same with a tread portion.
It will be noted that the base or body portions of the rails and the removable tread portions are so arranged that the oints between the former are disposed at points intermediate the ends'of the latter. This provides a smooth surface and eliminates the bump or click as the car wheels pass over the joints.
What is claimed is:
A tramway rail comprising a body portion in the form of an I beam, the upper face of which is formed with longitudinally extending parallel grooves and an intermediate longitudinal series of threaded sockets, a removable tread member having longitudinal parallel ribs on the lower face thereof for reception within the said grooves and an Formed in the intermediate series of Vertical openings reg- In testimony whereof, I affix my sgnzv sterng with the sockets of the body membell ture, in the presence of two Witnesses.
and eXtendnO' upwardl throuoh the bottom Y of the channel of saidytread tnelmober, and VILLIAM F VON *BARTHELD bolts disposed through the openings and into Witnesses: the sockets, the heads of the bolts being JOHN C. HOENNINGER, countersunk in the bottom of said channel. DANIEL A. BRUEN.
