Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1916.
Application filed May 12, 1915. Serial No. 27,532.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoBnR'r Hon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county-of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Inking Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to inking mechanism for printing presses and has special reference to mechanism for supplying ink to a distributing roll for use in web presses.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple form of inking mechanism which may be easily cleaned, is durable, and requires little power to operate; another object is to ellminate the. oscillating ductor roll to which there are many ob ections; and still other objects will appear in the following description and appended claims.
Referring to the drawing the figure represents a diagrammatic elevation, partly in section, of the improved mechanism.
In inking mechanism commonly used in presses of this type, the ink is transferred from the ink fountain to the distributing roll by an oscillating ductor roll which is moved bodily from contact with the roll in the ink fountain into contact with the distributing roll. The roll in the ink fountain is usually actuated by a ratchet mechanism, and its movement is slow and intermittent; the distributing roll moves continuously and at a relatively high rate of speed. The duotor roll comes alternately'into contact with the fountain roll andwith the distributing roll so that its speed of rotation is varied within wide limits. By contact with the distributing roll, it is rotated at a relatively high speed, which it still maintains when it is moved into contact with the fountain roll, causing the latter to drive ahead of its ratchet actuating means, and also causing considerable wear and pounding of the rolls.
The oscillating ductor roll is eliminated in the present invention by substituting therefor a rotary carrier indicated in the figure 'at 10 which rotates with shaft 11 in xed bearings, the carrier 10 is provided with arms 12, 12 of a resilient or yielding character being formed preferably of leather, and the position of shaft 11 with relation to the shaft 13 of the distributing roll and the shaft 14 of the fountain roll is such that the arms 12 contact with the periphery of both .of the distributing and the fountain roll 16. The fountain roll 16 receives its ink from the fountain 17 and the ink is wiped from its surface by arms 12 and carried to the dis tributing roll 15. The carrier 10 and rolls 15 and. 16 rotate in the directions indicated by the arrows. In this invention there s no tendency to drive the fountain roll ahead of its own operating device and the carrier is driven at a uniform rate of speed which is independent of the speed of rotation of either of the rolls 15 or 16.
I claim:
1. In an inking mechanism for presses, a fountain,-a distributing roll, and a rotary carrier operating on a fixed axis and equipped with blades adapted to transfer ink intermittently from the fountain to the distributing roll.
2. In an inking mechanism for presses, a fountain, and fountain roll, a distributing roll, and a carrier operating on a fixed axis, the said carrier having yielding blades adapted to contact with the fountain roll and the distributing roll, to transfer ink from the fountain roll to the distributing roll.
