SWIMMING-GLOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent. -Pgttehted luay 30, 1916.
Application filed June 9, .1914. Serial No. 844,023. i
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD DE Boon KENNARD, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Swimming-Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to swimming gloves, and one of the principal objects of the invention is .to provide a glove made of thin rubber or' elastic seamless material which will fitthe hand and said glove being prcj vided between the fingers and between the I index finger and thumb with webs made of elastic material which willstretch to form to the water and which will give and collapse when the fingers are closed.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a glove for use by swimmers which will increase the speed of the swimmer and which will be provided with elastic Webs between the fingers and between the front finger and thumb said glove being made of a comparatively thin rubber film' and-provided with perforations upon .the back of the glove, while the front of the. glove is imperforate, the perforations in the back of the glove serving to express the water from the inner side of the'glove.
These and other objects may be obtained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is aview looking at the back-of the glove with the web extended, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 1 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the back portion of the glove,
and 2 are perforations formed at intervals throughout the back portion and upon the fingers and thumb-of the glove to serve in permitting the water to escape which may gather about the wrist or within the glove.
ger and the next finger is a'kweb 3 made of elastic rubber of a thickness somewhat greater than the thickness of the material from which the glove is made. The web 3 v is secured to the inner sides of the fingers In use, the fingers of the user of the glove are slightly curved, so as to have the fullcontact with the water. tween the fingers and thumb are fully extended to give a large area of impactsurface during the stroke of the swimmer and during the return stroke the fingers are closed so that but little surface will be presented to the water, thus serving to feather the strokes.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a swimming glove made in accordance with this invention will serve to give considerable speed to the user, and the glove will be found very useful forb'eginners in learning to swim; The back portion of the glove being provided withv perforations will express or permit the water to pass out upon the contraction of the hands of the swimmer on the return stroke, and the webs between the fingers and between the front finger and thumb can be extended to give a large contacting surface to the water. The gloves are made and used in pairs, and'may be used to" advantage in playing water polo, permitting the player to tread water with the hands instead of the feet, and preventing players from getting scratched with the finger nails.
Various changes-may bemade in the details of construction without departing fromthe spirit and scope of the invention as de.
fined in the claim. Connected centrally between the llttle finlVhat is claimed is g A sw mmlng glove formed of sheet rubher havlng a palm and backportion, a tight fitting wristlet formed upon said glove, the
palm of said glove and fingers being imperforated and the back portion of said The webbing be- I glare having perforations extending from the swimmer in making a'strong stroke sub the finger tips to said wrist1ets,- whereby stantially as described. w upon the. contractipn of the hand in the In testimony whereof I afix my signature Water, water is expressed from the inner in presence. of two Witnesses.
