- This invention relates to gas burners, and has for an object to provide a burner with a plurality of burner tips arranged radially and circumferentially around the body of the burner to provide for a substantially cylindrical heater or burner for various uses where intense heat is required, and where it is desired to heat a surrounding or inclosing wall or receptacle.

To all whom it may concern v Be it known that we, WILLIAM W. KEMP and WILLIAM H. VAN HORN, citizens of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to gas burners, and has for an object to provide a burner with a plurality of burner tips arranged radially and circumferentially around the body of the burner to provide for a substantially cylindrical heater or burner for various uses where intense heat is required, and where it is desired to heat a surrounding or inclosing wall or receptacle.
Another object of this invention is to provide a burner of this type which is so peculiarly constructed and formed that it may be castwith the burner tips integral with the body thereof, and wherein the various bores and counterbores required for controlling the passage of gas may be quickly and easily formed in the casting, and wherein distributing or controlling disks, hereinafter more specifically referred to, may be readily applied to the tips of the casting. With these and other objects in view the above and other objects will be more clearly described and pointed out in the following detail description of the present preferred embodiment of this invention, the same being shown in the accompanying drawings wherein,-

of the burner, shown in Fig. 1 as comprising a single casting provided with a centrally disposed supply passage or opening 11. The body 10 has, arranged in longi-. tudinal rows in the sides thereof, cylindrical projections or bosses 12 radiating from the supply passage 11. The bosses 12 are spaced apart slightly, and the casting or body 10 is provided with an annular chamber 13 extending from end to end of the casting, and through which the bosses 12 extend so that each boss 12 is surrounded by the chamber 13, as may be clearly seen from Figs. 1 and 2.
Each boss 12 is hollow or has a bore of relatively large diameter therein, forming a gas receiving chamber 14 of the full depth of the boss and opening through the sure the mixing of the surrounding air with the gas, and to thus provide for the more complete combustion of the gas and a consequent increase in the intensity of the heat of the flame. v
From Fig. 1 it will be noted that the end of the casting has openings, the opening 17 being the gas inlet communicating with the central gas supply and being offset therefrom, while the opening 18 leads directly into the annular jacket or chamber 13. The openings 17 and 18 are internally screw threaded, or given any other suitable form, to respectively receive gas and water supply pipesto feed gas to the burner tips 12 and water to the jacket 13. The opposite end of the burner may be of similar construction to admit gas at the opposite end and to admit circulation of water through the jacket 13.
The opposite end of the casting is formed in a similar manner with the water and gas openings to admit of the circulation of water through the burner and to admit of the introduction of gas in the opposite end Patented May 30, 1916. I

In Figs. 3 and 4 a slight modification of the burner is shown wherein the casing l terminates at one end in an externally threaded extension 19 to which is detachably secured a cap 20, the latter having internal threads engaging the threaded extension 19. The cap 20 has a laterally ofiset gas inlet 17 a communicating with the gas supply passage 11, and has a water inlet 18 communicating with the jacket 13. The openings 17 and 18 are suitably formed to receive gas and water supply pipes. Ihe oppositeend of the body '10 is provided with acap of like form having the same passages or inlets therein, and adapted for the purpose of permitting 20 a complete circulation of the water through the jacket 13 and the feeding of gas into the opposite end of the burner.
I As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the bosses or tips 12 may be arranged spirally about the body 10, instead of in longitudinal rows as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and it is understood that any other arrangement of the burner tips or bosses 12 may be had which is found desirable in the manufacture of the burner, and for the various uses to which the burner is applied.
In Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawing there is shown a further modified form of the invention wherein the burner is made up of an inner pipe 11 and an outer pipe 10 the two pipes being concentrically arranged with respect to each other and securely joined. or held together by the burner tips 12 As shown, these burner tips are externally threaded at their outer and inner ends for engagement respectively through threaded openings formed in the outer pipe 10 and in the inner pipe 11". The tips 12 are turned down through the registering openings in the pipes to bind the tips in place and to firmly connect the pipes. Iii all other respects the burner tips 12 are of the form disclosed in connection with the illustrations above referred to and the tips are used in the present instance in uniting the concentric pipes and holding the same together as a unitary device.
Although the above sets forth a specific form of this invention, it is understood that various changes may be made in the arrangement of the burner tips, the form of' the casting, and the application of the caps to the ends of the burner, without departing from the spirit of the invention, such changes and modifications being limited only by the scope of the following claims.

A burner comprising an inner gas sup ply tube, an outer tube surrounding the first supply tube to form a water-jacket thereabout, tips extending radially from the inner tube through the outer tube, said burner having at one end thereof an offset passage for said centrally disposed gas passage, and a passage outside of said first offset pasisJage communicating with the water cham- 2. A burner'comprising an inner gas supply tube, an outer tube surrounding the first supply tube to form a water-jacket thereabout, tips extending from the inner tube through the outer tube, the ends of said tubes being screw-threaded, and a cap having an offset passage communicating with the inner tube, and a passage communicating with the water-jacket, the cap having internal screw-threads at the inner ends of said passages adapted to receive the screwthreaded ends of said tubes.
