Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIGE.
JOHN S. LOOMIS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,466, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN S. Looms, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machinery for Polishing Wooden or other Moldings and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying' drawing, which is lettered to correspond with and form a part of this specication.
In order that the public may be enabled to understand the nature of my said improvements, and to enable those who are skilled in the mechanic arts to construct and operate the same, I will describe them as follows, to Wit:
Figure 1 is a perspective front and top view of my machine.
A is the reciprocating' bed. B is a pulley on shaft S, which operates the eccentric C by means of the belt N N, that causes the reciprocating bed and gauge-bars E to move backward and forward by the arrangement of the vertical arms I) D, or the eccentric O may be arranged upon a vertical or upright shaft under the bed A, between two cleats or arms, D I), and operated by any suitable cog-gearing in lieu of the belts N N. .The gauge-bars E are adjustable by means of slots a a" with set-screws o, and are provided with adjustable heads F, which hold the polishing-blocks upon the molding, (of any required width,) at any suitable angle. The movable bed A is provided with any number of gauge-bars,
E, having adjustable heads F, so that the different curves or grooves in a molding are polished at the same time by simply providing the different heads F with reversed sections G, Fig. 2, of the curves and grooves of the molding M. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a head-block, F, and section of a gauge-bar, E, with reversed polishing-block G upon the molding M. The bottom of the block G next the molding is provided with sand or emery-paper of requisite fineness to make smooth work, at the same time preserving the edges ofthe grooves on the molding M, which is not the case with hand-work. Therefore the novelty of my invention consistsin constructing a series of gauge-bars similar to E E, provided with j slots a n' n a', to regulate and hold the adjustable heads F F at the same or at different angles at the same time, as shown at Figs. l and 2, for the purpose of polishing the diiferent members or parts of the different widths of molding simultaneously, when operated by the reciprocating bed or table A.
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
The gauge-bars E E, having slots n a n a and adjustable heads F F, in combination with the reciprocating table A, all constructed, arranged, and operating' substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. LOOMIS.
