To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS BETHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durham, in the county of Butte and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements inmechanical movements, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby rotary movement may beconverted into reciprocating movement.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character wherein a rotating gear is in mesh with an endwise movable rack together with novel and improved means coacting with the rack whereby the rack is caused to reciprocate upon continuous rotation of the gear in one direction.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved mechanical movement whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is renderedsimple'r, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantage'ous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein I Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of the device as disclosed in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, with the parts in a position other than that shown in Fig. 1; Fig. i is a view sub; stantially the same as Fig. 3 and showing the parts in a still further position; Fig. 5 is av sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating the guide member carried by the rack; and Fig. 7 is a view in perspective, detached, of the head as herein included.
The invention as herein disclosed is primarily intended for use with a drag saw although I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to limit myself to this particular usage. The invention may be employed with equal facility for other purposes.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a base member provided with the transversely disposed and longitudinally spaced sills 2 on which are rested and secured the longitudinally disposed sills 3 arranged in predetermined transverse spaced relation relative to the base 1. The adjacent end portions of the sills 3 are provided with the alined bearings 4c in which is rotatably mounted the shaft 5 adapted to be driven in any suitable manner and herein disclosed as provided intermediate its length with the drum 6 around which the conventional belt 7 is disposed, said belt leading from any desired type of motor. One end portion of the shaft 5 extends beyond a longitudinal side of the frame 1 and has secured thereto the gear wheel 8 adapted to mesh with the rack R carried by the elongated member 9 to the forward extremity of which a drag saw or other member is adapted to be operatively connected whereby said saw or member may be reciprocated.
The rack R, as herein disclosed, comprises the supplemental bar 10 of predetermined length and arranged in parallelism with the elongated member 9 and said member 9 and bar 10 are tied or .connected by the pins 11 adapted to be engaged in a conventional manner by the teeth of the gear 8.
Disposed outward of the member 9 is an upstanding guide way 12 substantially in the form of an inverted U and having the free extremities of the stems thereof inturned, as at 14. The inturned portions 1% are disposed beneath the member 9 and bar 10 and suitably anchored, as at 15, to the adjacent longitudinal sill 3. Mounted for sliding movement within the guide-way 12 is the head 16 with which is pivotally engaged, through the medium of the trunnion 17, the elongated bar 18 arranged in parallelism with the member 9. The opposite extremities of the bar 18 are provided with the inwardly disposed loops 19 through which the member 9 and bar 10 are directed and the vertical portions 20 of the loops 19 have rotatably engaged therewith the anti-friction jso rollers 21 with which the upper and lower edges of the member 9 and bar 10 engage, said rollers being provided with the annular grooves 22 to receive the marginal portions of said member 9 and bar 10.
Mounted for rocking movement upon the extended portion of the shaft is the forwardly directed beam 23 of predetermined length and having its forward extremity provided with the outwardly disposed loop 24 through which the member 9 extends and having rotatably mounted in the vertical portions 25 thereof the grooved rollers 26 with which the marginal portions of the member 9 engage, the outer extremity of the beam 23 has secured thereto the reinforcing beam 27 which is directed rearwardly and rotatably engaged with the shaft 5 adjacent the extremity thereof opposite to the gear wheel 8.
Interposed between the beam 23 and the loop 24 is the block or head 28 through which is disposed the endwise movable elongated member 29 arranged in parallelism with the member 9 and the beam 23 and having its opposite extremities provided with the heads 30. Interposed between the heads 30 and the block 28 are the expansible members 31, herein disclosed as conventional coil springs embracing the endwise movable elongated member 29.
As the member 9 and bar 10 are driven forwardly by the gear wheel 8, the forward end of the bar 10 will engage the inner head 30 just before the forward stroke of the member 9 and bar 10 is completed so that the adjacent expansible member 31 will be placed under compression to assure the rear end of the member 9 and bar 10 to pass around with the gear wheel 8 so that reverse movement will be imparted to the member 9 and bar 10. During this movement, it will be understood that the head 16 will have sliding movement within the guide-way 12.
The member 9 at a predetermined point in advance of the outer end of the beam 23 is provided with the inwardly disposed finger or lug 32 which is adapted to engage the outer head 30 just before the member 9 and bar 10 reach the limit of their inward movement so that the adjacent expansible member 31 will be placed under compression to cause the rear ends of the member 9 and the bar 10 to pass around with the gear wheel 8 so that the return or forward movement will be imparted to the member 9.
In order to meet the requirements of practice especially when my invention is employed in connection with a drag saw or the like, I provide means whereby vertical adjustment may be imparted to the member 9 and, as herein disclosed, I accomplish this function through the medium of the lever 33 pivotally engaged with the shaft 5 and provided with the upstanding extension 34, the outer extremity of which having pivotally engaged therewith the rod 35 also in pivotal engagement with the upstanding lug 36 positioned adjacent the outer extremity of the beam 23. It will be self-evident that upon requisite movement of the lever 33 the member 9 may be adjusted vertically, or more particularly the outer end thereof. In order to maintain the desired adjustment under the influence of the lever 33, I provide the body 1 or more particularly a sill 3 thereof with the upstanding rack 37 with which coacts the latch or lip 38 carried by the lever 33.
It is also to be noted that the guide-way 12 is provided with the stops 39 for limiting the movement of the head 16 in either direction in order to maintain the proper mesh between the gear wheel 8 and the rack R.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a mechanical movement constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be' assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice. n
I claim:
1. In combination with a gear mounted for rotary movement, a member having a guide-way intersecting the axis of the gear, a rack in mesh with the gear, a supporting member for the rack slidably engaged in the guide-way, and means for placing the Track under compression when the same reaches the end of its stroke in either direction.
2. In combination with a gear mounted for rotary movement, a member having a guide-way intersecting the axis of the gear, a rack in mesh with the gear, a supporting member for the rack slidably engaged in the guide-way, and means for placing the rack under compression when the same reaches the end of its stroke in either direction, said supporting member being mounted for rocking movement.
3. In combination, a gear mounted for rotary movement, a beam moimted for rock-' ing movement, a supporting member carried 'by said beam, a second supporting memthe rack under compression when the rack is at the limit of its movement in either direction.
4. In combination, a gear mounted for rotary movement, a rack in mesh with the gear and comprising a long member and a short member, and means coacting with the short member and the long member for placing the rack under compression when the rack is at the ends of its strokes.
5. In combination, a gear mounted for rotary movement, a rack in mesh with the gear and comprising a long member and a short member, means coacting with the short member and the long member for placing the rack under compression when the rack is at the ends of its strokes, said means including an endwise movable member having its extremities provided with heads with one of which the short member contacts and with the second of which the long member contacts, and expansible members coacting with the heads.
