lie it known that I, EDMUND C. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morgan Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new.
and useful Improvements in Mining-Machine 'Moving and Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to moving and holding devices for mining machines and has for its primary object to provide an improved device of this character for shifting I the position ofthe machine so that after it has completed its work in one position, 'itj may be shifted toa new position under its own power.
()ne of the objects is to provide an-improved combination and arrangement of parts in a device of this character;
Another object is to provide jacks or stays of improved construction which can be efliciently employed cooperatively with other parts mounted on the machine.

W'ith in the outer end of the fork 52 is pivotally mounted an eccentric cam 54 which may be oscillated by a handle 55 into and out of clamping engagement with the cable 51.
Referring now to Fig. 6 and to the embodiment showntherein, the mining machine is provided with winding drums indicated collectively by the reference'numeral 57 and which areof similar construction to those already described bodiment. Adjacent the rear end of the mining machine, pulleys or other suitable guides 58 and 59 are mounted, over which cables 60 and 61 pass directly to'the posts or struts 21. The drums 29 and30 are made to be operable separately so that should the mining machine reach the desired position while there is any slack in one of the cables, such slack may be taken up. and the device thereby adapted tohold the machine in operating position.

The combination with a mining machine capable of being moved about over solid ground, of a strut adapted to be rigidly mounted in amino back of the mining machine between the walls of the mine chamber, pivot mechanism betweensaid ing said pivotmechanism in adjusted position to prevent movement along said strut, and power apparatus'comprismg rope gearmg for swinging said mining machine on its pivot while held in adjusted position and along said strut when loosened and for moving said mining machine longitudinally when said pivot mechanism is released from said strut.

The combination with a mining ma chine movable over the floor of'amine, of a pair of anchorages one on each side-of said machine, two rope winding drums mounted concentrically on said mining machine, two ropes one wound on one of said drums in one direction and the other wound on the other drum in the opposite direction, and
one rope having its free end connected to one of said anchorages and the other rope having its free end connected to .the other of said anchorages, fixed struts adapted to be placed in themine in stationary position on opposite sides of the machine to serve as guides for said ropes, rope guiding pulleys at the rear portion of sald mining machine, a motor geared to said drums to rotate the same in opposite directions, and two clutches one for each of said drums to effect transmission of power to the same independently of each other. 1,
8. The combination with a mining machine, of a strut located in a fixed position back of the mining machine;- rope winding mechanism mounted on said mining machine, ropes connected to said winding mechanism at their inner ends and to the sides of said mining machine at their outer ends, a
plurality of rope guides mounted onsaid strut, and additional rope guides fixed in the mine near the sides of said mining machine. a
9. The combination with a mining ma- I chine, of two rotating rope winding drums coaxially and vertically mounted, on said mining machine, a motor for operating said .rope winding drums, means for controlling said drums, two ropes one connected to each of said drums, two rope guides one for each of said ropes, anchorages toward the rear of said mining machine for said rope guides, additional rope guides near the sides of said mining machine and located in fixed positions, and connections at or near the cent 'al portion of the'sides of said mining machine for the free ends of said ropes.
10. The combination of a mining machine, a' horizontal strut adjacent one end thereof, a support slidable along said strut, -the machine being pivotally connected to said support, oppositely disposed guides on said strut, vertical struts onopposite sides ot the machine, a pair of winding drums adapted to be rotated in opposite directions, and cables for shifting the position of the machine and holding the same in the position to which it is shifted, each of. said cables being wound at one end upon a drum and secured at its other end to the machine distant from said drum, the intermediate portion of each cable being passed about the strut at the side of the machine and through one of the guides on the rearward strut.
11. The combination with a mining machine, of winding mechanism mountedon said miningmachme, two rope guides adapt-s ed to be anchored in the mine backwardly of said mining machine, two'additional rope guides adapted to be anchored in the mine opposite the sides of saidmining machine, and ropes connected to the body portion of said mining machine and extending, around said rope guides to said'windi ng mechanism.
12. The combination with a mining machine, of a strut near one end thereof, pivot mechanism between said strut-and said mining machine and slidable along said strut, automatic rope Winding mechanism mounted on said mining machine, a rope connected to said winding mechanism, connections for said rope to effect movement of said pivot mechanism along said strut toadjusted position, and means for securing said pivot mechanism to said strut in adj usted position: v

The combination with a mining machine capable of being moved about over solid ground, of shifting mechanism therefor comprising two rope drums mounted thereon, twoclutches one associated with each of said rope drums, a motor for operating said rope drums, two ropes each having their inner ends said rope drums and wound thereon, and two rope guides at the rear portion of sai mining machine one rope uide for each of said ropes, the free ends of said ropes being adapted to be attached to anchorages in the mine opposite the sides of said mining machine.
16. The combination with a mining ma chine, of rope winding mechanism mounted on the rear portion of said mining machine, rope guides adapted to be connected to anchorages in the-mine backwardly of said mining machine, additional rope guides adapted to be mounted opposite the sides of the forward portion of the mining machine and connections to the body portion of the mining machine at tion thereof for the free ends of said ropes.
17. The combination with a mining machine, of rope drum winding mechanism mounted thereon, a motor for operating the said rope drum winding mechanism, two ropes havingtheir inner ends respectively connected to said rope drum winding mechfixed struts adapted to'be'located fastened respectively to or near the central por anism for power actuation thereby, rope guides at the rear end of said mining machine,one for each of said ropes, additional rope guides, one for each of said ropes each adapted to be anchored in the mine .back- 7 wardly of said mining machine, and fixed struts located opposite the sides of said'mining machine serving as attachments for the free ends of said ropes or as guides therefor when said free ends are anchored to the sides 7 of said mining machine. l8yThe combination with a mining machine, of winding mechanism mounted thereon, two ropes each-having its inner end fastened to said winding. mechanism, the free end ,of each of said ropes being adapted to be connected to an anchorage in the mine on opposite sides of said mining machine, two rope guides at the rear portion of said mining machine onefor each of said ropes, and means for controlling said winding mechanism to exert a pull on either rope alone or both of them simultaneously.

The combination with a mining machine slidable over solid ground, of' winding mechanism mounted thereon, ropes connected at their inner ends to said winding mechanism, the free ends of said ropes being adapted to be attached to anchorages in the mine opposite the sides of said mining ma chine, guidesfor. intermediate portions of said ropes, and means for controlling said winding mechanism so that force exerted on one rope alone will shift themining machine laterally and force exerted on both ropes simultaneously will shift the mining machine longitudinally. 20. The combination with a mining machine, of two rope winding drums mounted on said mining machine, a motor geared to said windingdrums to operate the same in opposite directions, two ropes having their inner ends, connected respectively to sai winding drums and having their free ends adapted to be attached to anchorages in the mine, and means for controlling said winding drums to shift the position of said mining machine.
21 The combination witha mining machine, of two rope winding drums concentrically mounted on said mining machine, two ropes having their inner ends connected respectively to said winding drums, the free ends thereof being adapted to be connected to anchorages, a motor connected to said drums to drive the same in opposite directions, and means for controlling-said drums independently of each other.
22. The combination with a mining machine capableiof sliding freely over the floor of amine chamber, of two rigidly mounted stays near the sides of said mining machine,
