UNITED STATES PATENT orFIoE.
LLOYD W. DEDRIQK, OF PUTNAM, NEW YORK.
AUTOMATIC WAGON-BRAKE.
Application filed November 29,1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LLoYD W. DEDRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Putnam, in the county of \Vashington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic VTagon-Brakes, of which the following is a specification. v V
This invention relatejsto automatic wagon brakes and more particularly to thattype in which the brake shoes are automatically. thrown into contact with the wagon or veh1-:
cle wheels by the holding back operation of the horses in descending a hill.
A principal object of this invention is to provide a device of this character in which the brake is immediately applied by the action of the horses, the brake shoes being of such a construction as to be thrown out of frictional engagement with the wheels when the wheels are traveling reversely for backing the vehicle or wagon.v
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings :Figure 1 is a top plan view of a wagon brake constructed in accordance with my invention illustrating the application thereof; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail enlarged sectional view of one of the brake shoes showing the manner in which the same is connected to the brake beam; Fig. 1 is a detail enlarged top plan view showing the manner in which one of A the operating rods is connected with the ac- In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention, an
is provided which comprises front and rear axles 6 having wheels 7 mounted on the opposite ends thereof and provided with front and rear hounds 8 which are connected by a reach 9 in the or- A tongue 10 is arranged in the front hound 8 in the usual manner and is secured thereto by a pin or bolt 11. The tongue is longitudinally recessed or slotted as indicated at 12 and shown to advantage in Fig. 2, and has a ferrule 13 slidably mounted thereon, which is in engage- Specification of Letters Patent.

is curved to provide a hook 15 which is in;
engagement with the ferrule 13 adjacent the inner end of the latter as advantageously illustrated in Fig. 5, the opposite end of said rod being curved to provide a hook 16 whiclr is in engagement with one end of a link 17, the opposite end of the latter being bifurcated and pivotally engaged with a second link 18. The link: 18 is pivotally engaged with a lever 19, the latterbeing pivoted approximately midway its ends on the pin or bolt 11.and adapted to be rocked by the operation of the rod 14: to impart motion to a second actuating rod as indicated at 20, said actuating rod having the extreme rear end thereof engagedwith a lever 21 identical with the lever 19, the lever 21 being pivotally engaged, at 22 to the reach 9 and having its upper end in engagement with a brace rod or yoke member 23, the latter having the opposite ends thereof detachably engaged with the brake beam 24.
Integrally formed on the link 17 and extending at a substantially right angle to the bodythereof is an arm or lug 29 which may be used as a foot lever for facilitating the disengaging of the brake shoes 25 from engagement with the rear wheels 7 by merely exerting pressure thereon so as to cause the lever 19 to be actuated on its pivot 11. In order to retain the actuating rod 14 in the recess12 a guard 30 is provided which in the present instance comprises a metallic strap In operation the neck yoke is engaged with the ferrule 13 in a suitable manner, the neck yoke in turn being in connection with the collars of the horses thereby causing pressure to be exerted on the ferrule 13 so as to actuate the same on the tongue 10 when descending a hill or the like thereby imparting movement to the rod 14 causing the same to be operated rearwardly and causing power to be communicated to the rod 20 so as to throw the brake shoes 25 in engagement with the wheels 7 by the actuation of the mechanism heretofore pointed out. When it is desired to back the wagon, it is seen that pressure will likewise be eX- erted on the ferrule 13 causing the same to be actuated rearwardly on the tongue 10 so as to impart movement to the rods 14 and 20 for actuating the shoes 25, but in view of the peculiar formation of shoes as used in the present instance the shoes instead of being frictionally engaged with the outer periphery of the wheels 7 are sufficiently disengaged therefrom so as to prevent the locking of the Wheels for retarding the course of the vehicle.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction,
proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claim and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A wagon brake including a rod extending longitudinally of the wagon tongue and connected at one end to a ferrule slidably mounted on the tongue, the opposite end thereof bent to form a hook, a link having an aperture in one end to receive the hook and the opposite end yoked, a foot operating means connected to the link, a second link pivotally connected to yoked end, of the first link, and itself having a yoked end and means associated with said second link for operating the brake beam.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
