Description

F. BUTCHER.
FIBEQR CASE RAILWAY TORPEDO.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 22; 9'5. 1, 182,537. Patented May 9, 1916.
FRANK BUTCHER, or VERSAILLES, rnNNsYLvANIA, ASSIGNOR ro cEN'rnAL RAIL,
WAY SIGNAL COMPANY, OFP ITTSIBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
'baZZ whom it may concern. f
Be it known that I, FRANK DUTGHER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Versailles, in the county ofAllegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fiber- Case Railway-Torpedoes, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in fiber case railway torpedoes. I
The object of my invention is to provide an open ended case in which the explosive tablet is placed and a sealing composition 3 forming the top of thecase.
Another object of my invention is to provide a torpedo of this character in which the explosive tablet is more tightly sealedwithin the case and having certain details of structure and operation hereinafter more'fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure l is a perspective view of my 1mprovedtorbottom 2 of the case 1, has slits 3 andadjacent its sides and the material of the bottom presseddownwardly, as indicated at 5, and forming a space for the passage of the rail-attaching clip 6, as fully shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing.
Surrounding the vertlcally disposed walls 7 of the case 1, is a band 8, which has itsiup per end extending a slight distance above the vertical walls 7 of the case. This band prevents the expanding of the vertical wall 7 The case 1 is preferably of the case 1. pressed from a sheet of fiber or. like material and this band positively insures against the expanding of the vertical Wall 7 of the case. A cementing or sealing composition 9 i is placed in the lower end of the case 1,and the explosive tablet 10 is placed therem and forced downward, thus forcing the cement-v ing composition downwardly and filling the space formed by the depressed portion 5.

Thesealing composition will also force its way around the oblique walls 11 of the exploslve tabletlO. Asealing composition 10,
similar to that placed in the bottom of the case, lis placed upon the upper face of the explosive tablet and is forced downwardly around the oblique walls 11 of the tablet 10. 4L sufficient amount of sealing composition is placed. within the case to bring it flush with the upper edge of the ring 8, and by thls arrangement it will be seen that the sealing composition rests upon the upper edge of the vertical wall 7 of the case 1 and forms a tight joint so that it is impossible for any moisture to seep down around the inner face of the vertical wall 7. By this arrangement it will be seen that a smooth upper face torpedo is formedwhich does away with the usual double case container and at the same time absolutely seals the explosive tablet against moisture.
In the modification shown in Fig.3, I have shown a slightly modified form. In this modification, the cement is placed in the bottom of the container the same as in Fig. 2, butthe disk 12 is first placed in the container on the cement and the cement is forced upwardly around the edge and securely locks the disk in the bottom of the container. The explosive tablet 10 is then placed in the container on the upperfaces of the disk 12 and the container above the explosive mixture is then filled in with the cement the same as that shown in Fig. 2. In each instance, the entire torpedo is dipped into the water-proof composition to absolutely insure a water-tight case. The
proper application of the invention is the placing of an explosive tablet of composition within a case and filling the space around the explosive tablet with a sealing composition so that the sealing composition holds the explosivev tablet within the case and also forms the top of the case which is shown in'both the preferred form and the -modification. While I have shownthis spe-1 ,cific arrangement of'the container, it will be understood that this could be changed withoutdeparting from my invention. I Having thus described my invention,
what I claim and desirev to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.- A railway torpedo comprising a case having an open face, an explosive tablet within the case, and a sealing composition filling the case around and above the explosive tablet and forming the top of the case.
2. A railway torpedo comprising a case having an open face, a band around the case and extending a slight distance above the top of the case, an explosive tablet within the case and a sealing composition filling the case above the tablet flush with the upper edge of the band and forming the top 7 of the case.
attaching clip passing through the de pressed portion, a sealing composition within the bottom of the case and filling the depressed portion above the clip, an explosive,
mixture tablet within the case, and a sealing composltlon filling the space around and above the explosive tablet flush with the upper edge of the case and forming the top of the case. 4
5. A railway torpedo comprising a case having an open face having a depressed portion in its bottom, a rail attaching clip passing through the depressed portion, a sealing composition within the bottom of the case, a band surrounding the vertical walls of the case and extending above the upper edge thereof, an explosive tablet within the case and a sealing composition filling the case and extending over the upper edge thereof and flush with the upper edge of the band and forming the top of the case.
6. A railway torpedo comprising a case having an open face, a disk cemented within the lower end of the case, an explosive tablet within the case and a sealing composition filling the case around and above the ex plosive tablet and forming the top of the case.
7. A railway torpedo comprising a case, having a central depressed portion, a railattaching strip passing through said depressed portion, a disk cemented within the bottom of the case, an explosive tablet within the case and resting upon the disk and a sealing composition filling the case around and above the explosive tablet and forming the top of the case.
8. A railway torpedo comprising a case having anopen face having a depressed portion in ts bottom, a dlsk cemented 1n the bottom of the case, a bandsurrounding the tion in its bottom, a disk cemented in the bottom of the case, a band surrounding the vertical walls of the case and extending above the upper edgethereof, an explosive tablet within the case and resting upon the disk, a sealing composition filling the case around and above the explosive tablet flush with theupper end of the band, and a waterproof composition entirely covering' the case.
10. A railway torpedo comprising a case having an open face having a depressed portion in its bottom, a rail-attaching clip passing through the depressed portion, a sealing composition within the bottom of the case, a band surrounding the vertical walls ofthe case and extending above the upper edge thereof, an explosive tablet within the case a sealing composition filling the case and extending over the upper edge thereof and flush with the upper edge of the band and forming the top of the case, anda waterproof composition entirely covering the case.
11. An improved torpedo of the character described, comprising a flat case having a bottom and an open top, an explosive tablet within the case and a cement composition within and entirely closing the open top of the case and forming a'cement top therefor and serving to hold the explosive therein.
12. An improved torpedo of the character described, comprising a flat case having a bottom and open top, a tablet explosive within the flat case, the open top of the case projecting beyondthe explosive and a cement composition Within and completely filling the open top of the case and forming a cement top therefor and serving to incloseand hold the explosive tablet therein.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
