To all whom t may concer/n Be it known that I, JoHN H. A. BoUs- FIELD, a citizen of' the United States Aof America, residing at St. Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Scales, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to scales, and more particularly to heavy track scales.
It is the principal object of the invention to obtain a relatively long knife edge bearing for the levers, and to provide for uniformly distributing the load throughout the length of the bearing.
In the drawings: Figure l is a cross section through a scale provided with my improved bearing; Fig. 2 is a section on line -.r Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of onel of the levers and supporting links.
A are the gir-ders of a track scale. B are depending legs fromsaid girders, which are supported upon cross levers lC fulcrumed upon stands D and connected by links E to the main levers F, these parts being of any suitable construction.
To obtain relatively long knife edge bearings, the levers C and the connections between the same and the legs B are constructed as follows: The lever C is bifurcated, having the side plates C connected by the integral cross barsG, H and I. The cross-bar G forms the support for the hardened knife edge bearing J 'engaging the fulcrum stand D, and the cross-bar H carries the knife edge bearing K through which the load is transmitted to the extension lever F. The intermediate cross-bar I constituting a support for a knife edge bearing L extending completely across the lever and throughI apertures M in the side plates thereof, so as to obtain the maximum length.A Above this knife edge bearing L is the bar N forming the cooperating bearing, and which also extends through the aperture M the full length of theknife edge L. The bar N is secured in a grooved saddle block O, which is connected by a pin P with a pair of depending links Q, embracing the bearing andthe cross bar I. The lower ends of these links are pivotally connected to a cross bar R having pivots R at its opposite ends engaging -bearings in the depending legsl B, which latter are upon opposite Specification of Letters Patent.

With the construction just described, it will be observed that the length of the bearing L and coperating bearing N may be greater than the width of the lever U, while the load which is transmitted through these bearings is distributed uniformly upon opposite sides of the central. plane of the lever. Furthermore, the construction is such that the knife edge is always free to perfectly aline itself with the cooperating bearing. l
The parts are easily assembled and to facilitate assembly the depending legs B are cut away at l5 opposite the apertures Mv in the sides C of the lever, so as to permit the insertionof the bearing bar N therethrough and into engagement with the saddle block. The bearing bar N is preferably held from lateral displacement b v a dowel pin S engaging registering apertures in said bar and saddle block.
To give greater stability to the structure, the cross barsr R for the yoke on opposite sides of the frame are cross connected in alinement with their pivots by a bar or tube T connected thereto A`by suitable means. This connection will not interfere with freedoniof adjustment in either bearing, but will prevent oscillation of the links Q in a transverse plane.
lll/hat I claim as my invention is:-
1. In a scale, the combination of a bifurcated lever provided with side plates connected by integral cross-bars, depending legs embracing said lever, a cross-bar beneath said lever pivotally engaging said depending legs, a link pivotally engaging said cross-bar and extendingr upward between the side plates of said bifurcated lever, and a knife edge bearing extending across said bifurcated lever for supporting said link.
2. In a scale, the combination of a bifurcated lever having a cross-bar intermediate its ends, a knife edge bearing supported by said cross-bar, a pair of links embracing said cross-bar and knife edge bearing, a saddle block pivotally engaging said links and supported upon said knife edge bearing` a cross-bar pivotally engaging thclower ends of said links, and legs upon lopposite sides of said lever supported upon said Cross-bar.
3. In a scale, the combination with a biureated lever 'having an apertured side plate, of a knife edge bearing extending across said lever through said aperture, and a coperating bearing member insertible lthrough said aperture into engagement with said knife edge bearing. v

In a scale, the combination with a bifurcated lever having an apertured side plate, of a knife edge bearing extending across said lever and through the aperture in said side plate, a coperating bearing member insertible through said aperture and extending the length of said knife edge bearing, a saddle block supported on said cooperating member, a link pivotally attached to said saddle block and depending therefrom to beneath said lever, a cross-bar pivotally connected to the lower end of said link, and legs embracing said lever and supported upon said cross bar.I
5. In a scale, the combination of a bifurcated lever having apertured side plates, and an integral cross bar extending between said side plates beneath the apertures therein, a Aknife edge, bearing insertible through the aperture in a side plate supported on said cross bar. and being of a length as great as the Width of the lever, a cooperating bearing also insertible through said aperture in the side plate, a saddle block engaging said cooperating bearing, apair of links embracing sai saddle block and pivotally attached thereto, said links straddling said knife edge bearing and supporting cross bar and extending to beneath the lever, a cross bar centrally pivoted to said depending links, and legs extending downward upon opposite sides of said lever and pivotally supported on said cross bar, said legs being cut-away opposite the aperture in the side plate of the lever, for the purpose described.
6. In a scale, the combination of a pair of hollow levers arranged in the same plane, knife edge bearings extending across each of said hollow levers, links supported from said knife edge bearings within said hollow levers and depending beneath the same,
cross bars pivoted centrally to said links and extending in planes transverse to the plane of said levers, legs embracing said levers and resting upon said cross bars, and a brace member extending between said cross bars in the plane of said levers and in alinement with the pivots of said cross bars.
7. In a scale, the combination of a bifurcated lever, depending legs embracing said lever, a cross-bar beneath said lever pivotally engaging said depending legs, a link pivotally engaging said cross-bar and extending upward between the sides of said bifurcated lever, a saddle block pivotally engaging said link, a bearing bar supporting said link, a dowil pin engaging registering apertures in said bar and saddle block, and a knife edge bearing extending across said bifurcated lever for engaging and supporting said bearing bar.
In a scale, the combination of a bifurcated lever, depending legs embracing said lever, a cross-bar beneath said lever pivotally engaging said depending legs, a bear ing extending across said bifurcated lever, a saddle block supported by said bea-ring, links embracing said bearing and pivotally engaging said cross-bar, and a pin for securing said links to said saddle block.
9. In a sca-le, the combination of a bifurcated lever, links extending between the sides of said bifurcated lever, means for supporting said links upon said lever, members at opposite sides of said lever, and a cross-bar beneath said lever having circular ends adapted for engagement with said members and transversely-extending circular projections at the center adapted for engagement with said links extending loetween the sides of the bifurcated lever.
