JAMES BURSON, OF YATES CITY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO HENRY WHITALL.
IMPROVEMENT 5N OIL-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,194, dated August 22, 1871.
To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES BURSON, of Yates City, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have made new and useful Improvements in Oil- Gups for J ournal-Bearings and other parts of Machinery; and I do declare the following to be a full ,clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon,in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the saidimproved oil-cup. Fig. 2 shows a sponge-holder in two sections and an elevation of an adjuster for the sponge-holder and Fig. 3 is a diagram of the spon ge-holder in an incomplete state, showing one mode of constructing it.
I take an ordinary spring-bottom oilcan, H, or any other vessel of suitable shape having a nozzle suited to support it in an inverted position on the cap of a journal-bearing, or a cross-head, or the like, by fitting in the oil-hole of the cap or other thing; and I fit a sponge-stopper or regu- Iator, S, in the said nozzle at the base, as shown, having a screw-threaded adjuster, S, extending up through the bottom of the cup, or a screw plug, 0, therein. This regulator is pressed into the nozzle more or less according to the amount of oil required to be delivered in a given time. The stopper or regulator may consist of any convenient metal holder for the sponge; but a simple way of constructing such holders will be in striking out a piece of sheet metal in the form represented in Fig. 3, then bending it into the form represented by the two sectional. figures in Fig. 2, and then screwing the top to the plate P, swiveled to the lower end of screw S, as clearly indicated, thus forming a holder, to which the sponge may be very readily and securely connected.
I do not limit myself to the employment of sponge for the regulator, for cloth and wool and some other substances will answer very well.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
