Description

UNrrED STATES- WILLIAM K. HORNER, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT lN HVDROCARBON TORCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,132, dated August 15, 1871. l
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM K. HORNEE, of Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvein ent in Hydrocarbon Torch es 5 and I do de clare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this speci'cation, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my torch as when in use, and Fig. 2 is a partial vertical section ofthe saine as when extinguished.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to the construction of a hydrocarbon torch, for fishing, the use of showmen, street venders, and other purposes; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the torch and an extinguisher inclosing the burner when not in use, asmore fully hereinafter' set forth.
In the drawing, A represents a suitable metallic fount for containing kerosene or any of the lighter hydrocarbons. From the bottom of the fount issues a supply-pipe, B, provided with a regnlatingcock, G. The pipe is bent to a right angle, with its extremity slightly turned upward and inserted in the center of a ball of ordinary cotton-wick, D, or other suitable material.
E is a reiiector, adjustably attached to the front ofthe fount and to the pipe, so that when the torch is lit the user may stand in the shade, as required in spearin g ish at night, and in many other cases. F is an extinguisher-case, provided with a door, F', on the iront end, fastened, when closed, by a hasp and staple, as shown. The case is slipped on the pipe, before the ball is placed thereon, through an openingI in the back head of the case, which permits said case to be drawn back from the ball when the torch is lit. The hole in the case being in the lower part, it falls down below the horizontal limb of the pipe and does not obstruct the action ofthe reflector. In certain cases, as in destroying' worm-nests in fruit-trees, the reflector is not required, and may be removed from the torch.
The torch is suitable for all purposes where a strong light to be used in the open air is required, the volume of iiame being regulated to the requirements of the occasion by the stop-cock. When not in luse the wick-ball is inclosed and protected by the case, which also prevents the soiling of anything coming in contact therewith.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction and arrangement of the extin guisher-case F F and ball D with the supplypipe B, cock C, and fount A, as described.
. VILLIAM K. HORNER.
