Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK HARPER DUNCAN, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,117, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK HARPER DUNCAN, of Evan sville, county of Vanderburg, State of Indiana, have invented an Improved Caster, of which the following is a speciiication:
My invention consists of a caster arranged for attachment to the foot of a sewing-machine stand or other article of furniture, by means of two or more set-screws, havin g heads which overlap and bind upon projecting portions of the said foot, as fully described hereafter, the said overlapping screws enabling the caster to be quickly and readily attached to the foot, and without involving the necessity of drilling holes through or otherwise especially preparing the latter.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved caster 5 Fig. 2, a side view partly in section, and Fig. 3, an inverted plan view.
A is a metal plate, having on its under side a pin, a, carrying the swivel B, which is similar to the swivels of ordinary casters, .and which is furnished with the usual roller D. The plate A is furnished with three screws, el, d', and e, having the usual slotted heads, so as to be operated by an ordinary screw-driver. E is the lower portion or foot of a sewing-machine stand or other article of furniture, and this foot has a projection, j', confined to the plate A by the heads of the screws d d, while the rear of the foot is recessed at x for the reception of a portion of the head ofthe screw o, as shown in Fig. 2.
I prefer, especially when the caster is intended for attachment to sewing-machine feet, to form the screws with tapering heads, as shown in the drawing; but this is immaterial, and depends in a great measure upon the shape of that portion ofthe foot which the heads of the screws are to overlap.
It will be found preferable, in most instances, to use three screws, arranged in the manner above described; but two screws would in some cases answer the purpose if the foot were slightly recessed to receive them, while in other instances it might be found advisable to use four screws. The screws being adjustable enable the caster to be readily and securely attached to any sewing-machine foot without involving the neces. sity of drilling holes through or otherwise especially preparing the latter; and it can be readily detached for purposes of repair, or when no longer required for use. rlhe roller D, instead of being hung to the plate A by a swivel, B, as be fore described, may, if desired, be immovably xed to the said plate.
I claim- Acaster, arranged for attachment to the foot of a sewing-machine stand, or other article of furniture, by means of two or more set-screws having heads which overlap and bind upon projecting portions ofthe said foot, all substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciiication in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
FRANK HARPER DUNCAN.
Titnessesz HENRY A. LOZIER, S. R. HoRNBRooK.
